Free Music Notes for San Francisco's Still DoomedFree Music Review: Raw Power Hit: 5 StarsIf you like the raw energy of early punk bands, then Crime is right in your garage. Lots of noisy fuzzy guitar and seething vocals. They come from a very creative time in music when we were trying to get over the british invasion, the deafenig drone of metal and the hideous nature of disco. Punk was a reaction to these doldrums of music and got rock back on track. Crime was a refreshing breeze in the mediocre fog of pop music. TheyMusic for Insect Minds remind me of Halo of Flies from Minneapolis and Squirrel Bait from Louisville.
Free Music Review: real good rock Hit: 5 Starsthis is an essential proto-punk record. I like the production, it sounds like its live. Apparently they were too rebellious to call themselves punk, which is extremely respectable, considering everyone else was consciously trying to be "punk," and Crime is actually better than almost all of them. And somehow this band is more ahead of its time than most other early punk bands, since their sound resembles that of bands like nation of ulysses. audible influences include the stooges, new york dolls, and proto-punk like perhaps rocket from the tombs or electric eels. if you like early punk, or even good later punk, this record is necessary.
Free Music Review: "All You Hippies Can Fade Away" Hit: 5 StarsThis is a flat-out AMAZING collection of studio recordings from "San Fransisco's first and only rock & roll band." Sound quality is pretty fine considering that these are most likely rehearsal room tapes, but then again a sterile studio sound wouldn't have suited these guys anyway. Crime were always outsiders and never really accepted by the so-called "hip" scenesters, and if THAT isn't the ESSENCE of rock and roll I don't know what is!
Free Music Review: wow... Hit: 5 Starsso great to have this material compiled on one convenient little "package" -
i remember having a cruddy-sounding cassette tape back in the day & treasuring it.even though these recordings are low-fi at best, dont let that scare you off - this is authentic ROCK N ROLL no matter what label you want to place on it, Punk or otherwise.
this is timeless stuff & worthy of your attention
Free Music Review: Crime Pays Hit: 4 StarsThis is a reissue of a 1990 compilation featuring 18 tracks recorded live in the studio in '78 and '79 plus alternate versions of the two songs that appeared on Crime's first single. Crime boasted that they were "San Francisco's first and only rock and roll band". While that's certainly arguable, they were, in fact, one of the west coast's (and the nation's) earliest and best punk bands. While the sound quality of the studio rehearsal tapes leaves something to be desired, the performances are great across the board. Tracks 1-11 (from '78) are especially rockin'. Like so many great California bands of this era (Avengers, Dils, Zeros, etc.) Crime only recorded a few singles and no long player. Luckilly, these 22 tracks are again available. Great stuff!
