Free Music Notes for Vol. 3-Escape from NyFree Music Review: Molten Lava from the World's Greatest Label
After much waiting on both sides of the Atlantic, the Wordsound Eye finally released the third installment of the seminal Crooklyn Dub imprint just before the millennium. The album is subtitled "Escape from New York" after the Wordsound crew's exodus from the Big Apple. Repelled by the mass influx of the post-college loft-living professional into Brooklyn, they escaped and established links with their Dub family across the world to form the Crooklyn Dub Outernational. After two classic predecessors, the question on many minds was whether WS could do it again and avoid making a less-than-sublime album. We need not even ask such a question. Wordsound prove once again that their past glories were no fluke, and that the sould of this music is running through their veins... they couldn't fail if they tried! And Crooklyn Dub keep it smokin' with this release. I got this a few days before the millenium and it has never left my CD player. Like all WS music, it can be appreciated on so many levels, and you'll find yourself coming back to again and again only to unearth new treasures for your spirit. "Open the Gates" by Blood is pure gold (and always went down well when I played it out), Roots Control sound very different stylistically to their usual output but still hot, Laswell is legendary and it's always an honour, but interestingly his sometime studio-engineer Layng Martine contributes the most beautiful track with "Over the Half World". Nu Seeka's track is totally different from "No Apparition" track on Vol 2 (THE most interesting direction taken in sound for ages) but again completely fresh and stunning. Slotek's0 "Dusk Till Dawn" will unnerve you before blowing your speakers, and of course the prolific one, spectre, takes out all pretentious fakers with his classic "My Dub Weighs a Ton". It doesn't get much better than this, folks, but if you haven't got Vols 1 and 2 then buy them first.
