Free Music Notes for CSNY/Deja Vu LiveFree Music Review: I am a citizen! Hit: 3 Stars
Neil Young may not be a citizen of the U.S. but I am and I agree with most of what Neil Young says. This seems like a pretty good representation of what the 2006 tour was all about, but I am disappointed that the album doesn't include "The Restless Consumer." That song seemed one of the highlights of the show.
Free Music Review: Could be better ! Hit: 3 Stars

Free Music Review: Time to Retire? Hit: 2 Stars
The magic that was once CSN and sometimes Y is apparently in it's waning days.
The core of the "CSN" sound from the inception was always three part vocal harmony. Yes, the song writing was always excellent, and the instrumental prowess of Stills and the sometimes Young enhanced the experience. But let's face it. Without those harmonies, it falls apart. Neil was never a harmony singer, and when he tried to be, he generally threw a wrench into things. So when he was on board, armed with 60% of the material, the sound really didn't suffer much with his distinctive lead vocal. CSN would lay on their lush harmonies, and it all seemed to work well.
So true to form, here we have a live album with Neil providing most of the script.
Neil still sounds like Neil. But then, he never did have a great voice, and as such the onset of elder years hasn't had the same deteriorating effect it's had, on say, Stephen Stills.
It is truly time for Stills to realize he can no longer sing. Especially harmony. They do a version of Wooden Ships on here where Nash has assumed the tradional Stills parts. And that works fine...Nash can still sing. The song goes along fairly well until the first chorus...where Stills attempts to add the third harmony. Sadly, the poor man almost sounds like an old drunk....sitting at the bar...trying his best to sound like George Jones on the jukebox. Stills has been over time one of rocks great guitarists, songwriters, and singers. The latter has passed him by, I'm afraid.
Nash is still steady ol' Nash. But since this album is largely political, it might of been nice to hear more from Nash. Military Madness is a great choice...but how about Soldiers of Peace? I think Neil could have made room for another great Nash tune within the scope of the songlist.
Crosby, with his recent weight loss, seems have regained some of the smooth timbre in his once elegant voice. Like Nash, Crosby has routinely been squeezed out a bit when Neil's on board. No Long Time Gone here, which would have been a natural, but hey, it's been covered over and over. Gone Forever from the CPR catalog makes a nice anti-war statement..would have been a nice surprise on here. Make some room, Neil, gee-whiz.
All-in-all, it's not one of my favorite albums. It's almost like there's two different shows going on. The "Neil Show" is all about making a political statement...well, more like pounding the statement into our heads...Ok, Neil. Think we get where you stand. He even marches out a horn section for his songs. Just seems so 'un-CSNY' like.
The "CSN Show" almost seems like they found some old cuts in a box somehere and tossed them in just make things seem more fair. All old songs that we've heard a million times...rehashed and made worse by comparison to previous recordings.
I really don't recommend this album.
Free Music Review: Maybe the DVD will be better.... Hit: 2 Stars
It's rather comical, leaving Neil in charge. The Barney Fife of CSNY does it again. He's been adrift aesthetically since David Briggs passed, and his errant judgment cuts across every aspect of his career, save PRAIRIE WIND and MASSEY HALL. What is on offer here is a very unrevealing cross section of some, and mostly his, songs from the Freedom of Speech tour. I caught the show in Hershey and this disc fails to capture the impact and power of the performance. How in the world you leave off OHIO as it segues into OVER AND OUT I'll never know. In the course of the concert, it was the single most effective 9 minutes of music that this group has ever done. It hit the crowd in the heart and it brought home exactly what has transpired in America over the past 28, and especially the most recent 8 years: a decimation of the US Consitution in the name of greed fueled by xenophobic intollerance and jesus whipping. A fallen empire on its knees....
Don't take my say so - look at Russia's current actions: Putin is fully aware of the impotence of W and his puppetmaster Cheney and sees an opportunity to arouse the Russian bear and re-invent totalitarian influence. W is too busy with Olympians gone wild in the volleyball sands, and a tied down military in the oil sands. God help you if your criticism gets heard.
That's what this tour was about, but a single CD edit of the many powerful performances by Stills (God Bless him, even as he battled cancer), Crosby (still the philosophical and political brains of teh outfit) and even Nash (whose performance transcended his usual hippie-cloyingness) would give you the impression that they were just along for the ride. Not so. But you start to understand why they get pissed at Ol Shakey. This isn't even as good as some of the bootlegs I have heard from this concert tour, so I would advise you to skip it, and hopefully the DVD will restore the integrity of the entire performance. It is better than TIME FADES AWAY, which again was a disaster as a document of a tour that, at least in Philadelphia, was the best live Neil Young concert I have seen or heard, ever.
Of course, who knows, maybe he is saving the good stuff for his massive Archive release on blu-ray (what on earth is the wait for a guy who uses first takes to commit his ouevre to blu-ray?). Hey, hey, my, my....
