Free Music Notes for Deja VuFree Music Review: A Must In Any Collection Hit: 5 Stars
Though the four members of the group had had great success both before this record (Stills and Young in Buffalo Springfield, Crosby in the Byrds, and Nash in the Hollies) and after, in various solo efforts, everything came together in this near-perfect record. Few records have defined a decade, or a generation, as this one has. Classics such as "Carry On", "Teach Your Children", "Helpless" and "Woodstock" (to name but a few) helped influence and inspire a number of bands that came after (most notably the Eagles) and still sound just as fresh and compelling as they did when they first appeared on the radio. Crosby, Stills and Nash had already had one hit album, but the addition of Neil Young to this recording gave the group a little added punch. Whether it was gentle, soulful ballads, infectious pop standards, or four guitar rock workouts, CSN&Y proved that they could, and did, it all with equal ease. A must-have for any collection.
Free Music Review: Classic Albums of 1970: No. 4 Hit: 5 Stars
Published reports state that Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young logged 800 studio hours before completing this masterpiece. Each band member had two solo songwriting credits, with Stills and Young co-writing the scorching "Everybody I Love You" and Joni Mitchell penned the anthemic "Woodstock."
These are songs that are imbedded in every baby-boomer's psyche. Who among us can't sing along to Nash's elequent "Teach Your Children"? [Note: That's the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia playing pedal steel. The Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastion also shows up on harmonica for Crosby's "Deja Vu."]
The vocal harmonies that made CSN such a joy are here as well, and with Young on board there is an edgier sound to many of these songs. This album has it all: lush harmonies, excellent songwriting and stellar playing. The band would scale these heights on subsequent releases, but never as consistently as they do here. ESSENTIAL
Free Music Review: Bridging the GAP! Thanks CSN&Y. Hit: 5 Stars
My children are older now than I was when I went to Woodstock. For years I have tried to make them understand what the 60's were all about. This album bridged that gap. My kids love this album (so do I of course). This Deja-vu original captures the hopes and dreams that we flower children had at that time.As for the quality of this album, I was thoroughly pleased. I'm just glad that it is a CD and I don't have to worry about it wearing out from usage as my original record AND 8-track did (does anyone out there remember THEM?). As a matter of fact, my recent purchase of this master piece has got me listening to music again after 25 years, and at 48 I feel 20 again. I guess I want to say that this album has it all. I just wish that the music today had the hopes and dreams of this generation so that they could "Teach Your Parents Well". Don't miss out! Buy it today! You won't regret it.
Free Music Review: Their Best Album Of All Time! Hit: 5 Stars
Deja Vu is CSN's best album. A big reason of this is Neil Young. CSN were great together, but when they joined with Young, the possibilities were endless. This album shows that. Crosby wrote two great songs on the album; Almost Cut My Hair and Deja Vu. Graham Nash also wrote some great songs, including one of the best songs they ever did, Teach Your Children, and also Our House. Stills and Young really shine on this album, collaborating on the great Everybody I Love You. Individually, Stills wrote such classics as Carry On and 4 + 20. Young wrote Country Girl, which is a great song, but Helpless may just top the album as the best song on it. With these four incredible songwriters on one album, how did they ever find room for Joni Mitchell's Woodstock? I don't know, but I'm glad they did, because it is a great song. This album is very essential to any fan of any of the four artists.
