Free Music Notes for Deja VuFree Music Review: An essental album...I couldn't be without it Hit: 5 Stars
The addition of Neil Young to the already stellar trio of Crosby, Stills, and Nash produced an album of incredibly well-crafted songs. Stills' amazing talent on the guitar is bolstered by his interplay with Young, and as usual the group's vocal blend is amazing. Stills' album opener, "Carry On," which began life as two seperate songs, is my favorite track on the album, along with their cover of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock." Crosby's title cut is wonderful, as are Nash's two songs, "Teach Your Children" and "Our House." Stills' short but sweet "4+20" (reminiscent of earlier CSN songs such as "Helplessly Hoping") showcases Stephen's great voice, and Young's "Helpless" and "Country Girl" suite are great additions to the album. If you're new to CSN(Y), get this album! One of the best there is!
Free Music Review: A Reflection Of The Times Hit: 5 Stars
"Deja Vu" is a masterpiece from 1970 reflecting the attitudes and feelings of the aging hippie population. It's almost a homage now to that long gone era of peace. "Carry On" has become an anthem for that generation and "Teach Your Children" has been in more movie soundtracks and special collection CD's, that it is a C,S,N&Y staple. The tracks are more like a 'best of' collection from these six guys (remember Taylor and Reeves are here also). "Helpless" tugs at your heart while "Our House" is so cute and bouncy, you expect to play it in a children's nursery. "Woodstock" beats all here, considering they were a primary act and one of the few to jot down the experience on an album. If you cannot get the Box Set, at least buy this CD. It's a musical memory-box.
Free Music Review: THE album for the 60's and TODAY... Hit: 5 Stars
This recording blew me away 30 years ago, and still stands on it's own today. I loved the compassion, hope for a better tomorrow, yet the recklessness and turbulence of the times all mixed into one. Anyone calling this 'dated' is insane - it still stands up to what CSNY is doing today. This is NOT nostalgia - this is timeless, important music that is beyond some of the commercial trite of some CSNY 'singles'. Roll a doobie, and yep, it might be more enjoyable...and throw on some Hendrix while you are at it...but the bottom line is that CSNY had something to say, and I wish I could hear a message beyond 100-watt subwoofers playing (c)rap music. The magic of 'Carry On' is worth the price of admission on this classic - anyone missing this is depriving themselves of music history.
Free Music Review: CSNY's pinnacle! Hit: 5 Stars
This was CSNY's finest work. It went all the way to number 1 on the US album chart and produced three hit singles: "Woodstock", "Teach Your Children", and "Our House". Every song on the album saw at least some airplay on FM stations that played album cuts and many are still played on classic rock stations. Songs like "Carry On", "Almost Cut My Hair", and "Déjà vu" have become classics. This was CSNY's first and unfortunately their last effort as a real group. After this seminal work, they let egos get in the way of future efforts and really ceased to be a cohesive group. Instead the became solo artists that would get together once or twice a decade to do some recording and make some money. This album makes me wish for what might have been had egos not gotten in the way.
Free Music Review: So Right Hit: 5 Stars
I just recently revisited this great record, and was blown away. I actually like it more now than I did when it was first released. Back in the late sixties and early seventies so much was out there, so much was good that we held everything to a higher standard. When you listen to this work of art now, and put it up against the pitiful compositions that are offered by todays crop of "talent", you get the true perspective. Yeah, I sound like an old timer, but thank god I was around to enjoy this stuff twice. The harmonies of Nash and Crosby, the bite of Young's guitar balanced by the subtle warmth of Still's playing his tasteful leads, is the whole package. Get it and think about the value of real talent.
