Free Music Review: (3.5 stars) Very underrated

Since they all got together back in 1970, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young have worked together in a huge variety of combinations. You've got the CSNY records, the CSN records, the Stills-Young band, and the Crosby-Nash collaborations. Well, here's one for you: this is pretty much a Stills-Nash collaboration. Crosby was pretty much useless here - he only wrote one song, the standard-issue piano ballad "Delta," and only sang on that and the mock-Elton "Might as Well Have a Good Time" - which meant that Stills and Nash were pretty much in control. Most the harmonizing was instead done by assorted outsiders, including ex-Eagle Timothy B. Schmidt, Art Garfunkel, and various others. It's an album that shouldn't work, but does. It's more poppy than the previous album, but since Stills and Nash are so good at writing pop songs, I don't care. Most of the songs boast great melodies - the well-harmonized, folksy hits "Southern Cross" (you know, "I have been around the world...") and "Wasted on the Way," which features surprisingly enjoyable fiddle soloing; the slightly disco-fied but still good "Turn Your Back on Love." There's a slightly higher quotient of rock here than on previous albums, and it manages to be quite good: surprisingly, Nash gives us the successful hard rocker "Into the Darkness," while Stills adds "Too Much Love to Hide" and "Since I Met You." This isn't CSN turning into Aerosmith, of course, but the rockers are a blast just the same. I also like how they mix the classic "Find the Cost of Freedom" with the title track. Other than the hits, the record's rarely exceptional, but still quite solid, and even the distinctively lesser tunes ("Song for Susan," "Delta," "You Are Alive," "Might as Well Have a Good Time") get by on mood and the wonderful harmonies. I mean, when you've got Art Garfunkel harmonizing, it's gonna be good. The production's a bit slicker than previous albums, and that makes it the slightest bit annoying, but it still stands far ahead of what most the '60s vets were putting out at the time. After all, it eschews the synth- and hair-metal mania of contemporary Stones and Dylan records. So it's not quite as good as the previous four albums, but if you're a fan of the group (and I sure am!) you'll probably appreciate it just the same.
