Free Music Notes for Greatest HitsFree Music Review: AS MARKETING PLOYS GO, IT SOUNDS GREAT Hit: 5 Stars
Bear in mind, trhere is no argument about the selection of material here. If you're a fan, this collection plays to all of their strengths and wisely avoids any material from AFTER THE STORM and that infamous weenie-roast, LIVE IT UP. Unfortunately, it also avoids AMERICAN BEAUTY, which had a number of great Young-Crosby moments throughout. Even Stills rose to the occasion on that one. Still, if you were going to assemble a package that would capitalize on the catalogue that all of us Woodstock-wannabe's regard as the amber moments of peace and righteous thinking, this is it.
If you're not a fan, you wouldn't have bothered reading any of these reviews anyway.
The strength of this release, and the eclusive reason for buying it, is how incredibly great and marvellous and clear and distinct the vocals have been remastered! It truly is an aural wonder to hear and be able to identify when Crosby, Stills or Nash chime in (or for that matter when Mike Finnegan pinch hit for a drug addled Crosby). I can not remember any of their other re-mastered releases sounding this clear and well-defined. It's a joy. Almost like sitting there in front of them.
Still in all, I would think there is more money to be made in releasing some of their live shows, especially ones I caught at the Mann in Philly or in Toronto. They were astoundingly brilliant and especially in the Canadian shows singing like their visitor visas depended on it. Post addiction performances were often about redeeming their career, even if the newer material was lame. The fact that they could rise above their self-inflicted wounds was inspiring, and so perhaps they'll get around to that. Pearl Jam, the Dead, King Crimson have found gold in concert tapes, I'd hope CSN would do the same. Their shows were worth it.
Even though you may have all of the songs on this set, I'd tell you this is definitely worth it. You'll be stunned by the vocals, and that was always their strong point.
Free Music Review: Nice set Hit: 5 Stars
Though I own all CSN on vinyl, I'm used to hearing these songs, esp. the first album, in a certain order since every song is etched into my soul, this is a really nice set. Like being at at a CSN concert, they each take turns doing their own songs. I really like this CD compliation. The sound has been cleaned up not once ,but twice and it's really nice not to hear a crackle hiss or pop like my two LP's of each album that I wore out. In the old days, like the rumours that Paul was dead, we used to think these guys were from outerspace because no humans could do harmonies this tight and still be human. The liner notes were nice to read since we had never been officially told who played what on the original liner notes that had the words. They did leave out a song or two I would have added but the CD clocks in at 78 minutes so they ran out of room. I'd forgotten that Stephen had played every instrument on Judy Blue Eyes, which was written to Judy Collins who, along with Joan Baez were the hippest, hippy chicks of our revolutionary generation. Another of the greatest hippy chicks was Joni Mitchell of course, but that's another review. Stephen did most of the instruments on the whole original 1st LP. All the overdubbing hiss is gone. Graham's song "Just A Song Before I Go" and every other song was so nice to hear after not hearing it for so long. David's songs are chilling Crosby classic's he used to write before too much freebase stole his soul for a while. I speak from experience because the same $hit stole my soul for a while , too. He and Graham are back with a new duet album that sounds like they never left. Stephen also has a new CD that confirms he's BACK! With old consorts like Joe Vitale, who helped Joe Walsh do his best songs,Rocky Mtn Way,for example.Stephen has created another classic solo CD. If you're a Stephen fan you should own it along with this really nice set.
Free Music Review: Great!! Could have used Neil, though... Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great collection of CSN's most popular songs. Note that I said most popular, and not necessarily their greatest songs. As with any greatest hits collections, there will always be songs that have been left off for one reason or another, and a case can be made for many CSN songs (Dark Star, Woodstock, Find the Cost of Freedom, etc.). However, the overall strength of the collection is there. While heavily weighted toward their first two albums, CROSBY, STILLS & NASH (AKA - Dirty Couch) and DÉJÀ VU, there are several songs from CSN and DAYLIGHT AGAIN, their 1982 "comeback" album. It should be noted that this shouldn't be taken as a complete overview of the band's history, as several albums (LIVE IT UP, ALLIES, AMERICAN DREAM, etc) have been completely ignored. Given the quality of those recordings, however, I can't blame them.
Just a listen will show just how tight their harmonies were/are, and their songwriting skills (mainly Stephen Stills) were well above par. Guest appearances from Gerry Garcia (Wooden Ships) and Art Garfunkel (Daylight Again) add to the CSN mystique and serve to enhance the music that much more. I would, however, have enjoyed hearing some of their material with Neil Young, as he tended to add an edgier sound to the group, making it more lively and less mellow. I know, it's CSN and not CSN&Y, but considering some of their greatest material came from the CSN&Y era (DÉJÀ VU, 4-WAY STREET), it's a shame that they didn't include it.
I agree with the other reviewer that said to get this album, but also pick up DÉJÀ VU as well. I would also throw in 4-WAY STREET for their live material. Although it's not as polished, it more than makes up for it in energy.
Free Music Review: Great Cd Great Songwriters Hit: 5 Stars
As several of you have mentioned, this is a great cd. It contains a lot of CSN's popular songs, and it is a good introduction for new fans of CSN, or for those who aren't new fans. Some of the highlights on this cd for me are: "Suite Judy Blue Eyes," Wooden Ships," "See The Changes," Shadow Captain," "Long Time Gone," "Guinnivere," and "Wasted on the Way."
"Suite Judy Blue Eyes" is a CSN song I have always liked, and because of it I'm a fan of their music. "Guinnivere" and "Shadow Captain" are both great songs written by David Crosby. "Shadow Captain" is a song in which Crosby, Stills, and Nash's voice blend quite well. The same goes for "Carry On," even there seems to have been over dubbing. "Wooden Ships" contains great lead vocals both by Crosby and Stills, while "See the Changes" contains great vocal harmonies between all three members and great lead vocals. Another favorite for me is "Helplessly Hoping" because of the singing. The guitar playing on here is also great, and the clarity of the sounds on here is astounding!
I can understand why there isn't any CSNY stuff on here. The cd clearly states that this is a CSN collection. This is definitely one to get, and I'm glad my dad baught. It's partly because of him that I'm a fan of the group. He's been a fan since the beginning. I definitely plan to buy more CSN and CSNY albums. Might have to make a copy of this one for dad, since I took his. At least he knows where to look if he wants it.
Free Music Review: GREAT CD but they could have done this just a bit better. Hit: 5 Stars
Crosby Stills & Nash are Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers for good reason! They have been called "the voice of a generation" and at the very least their music is far superior to much of what came out of the Woodstock era. The group worked together for a VERY long time and it is terrific that this CD is coming out remastered after all these years! This CD ALSO features guest artists Jerry Garcia and Art Garfunkel--a wonderful plus! The sound is rather good and you do get 19 (yes, nineteen) songs here. However, I would have to agree with other reviewers and two of my friends when they comment that you do NOT get the song "Woodstock" nor is there anything including Neil Young here. Quite a surprise for a recording they polished up as a remastered release! The producers certainly could have included at least one song with Young.
But make no mistake--this CD is very well done! Crosby Stills & Nash harmonize magnificently on this CD--as they always did--and their varied backgrounds make for an awesome blended finished product. As one Amazon reviewer notes, I also say get this CD but maybe add the album entitled Deja Vu--something a bit more kinetic--to get the experience with Neil Young adding to the Crosby Stills & Nash material.
I recommend this CD especially for two groups: Crosby Stills & Nash fans, obviously, and for those music fans of the Woodstock era. This is also a fine introduction to a very influential group's work!
