Free Music Notes for Greatest HitsFree Music Review: A Great Collection of Greatest Hits Hit: 5 Stars
Formed in 1968, Crosby, Stills, and Nash combined classic rock and roll with a distinct folk sound to produce a very unique brand of music. Although the trio only recorded four albums together, they placed their mark on the American music scene that still remains today.
Each member of the trio provides their own unique talent to the mix. Stephen Stills is excellent on "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" and the ever-popular "Southern Cross". Graham Nash leads on the popular "Teach Your Children", and David Crosby's tribute to Robert Kennedy, "Long Time Gone", brings out the emotional turmoil of the sixties. These three musicians were integral parts in other groups, including The Byrds, The Hollies, and Buffalo Springfield. When they combined their talents, their music spoke for a generation of listeners.
I enjoy the music of CSN very much, especially Stills' "Southern Cross", and this greatest hits collection provides the listener with a great sampling of the music that made CSN famous with so many fans. I only wish they would have included some of the songs recorded with Neil Young on the album, but this is a minor point that takes nothing away from the overall excellence of this disc.
I give this CD my highest recommendation. CSN are still very popular today, and this great disc provides the listener with many of their best-known songs. Very good and highly recommended.
Free Music Review: Impeccable "Greatest Hits" of CS&N (not CSN&Y) Hit: 5 Stars
On the heels of the excellent 'politically incorrect' (no recent (post-1992) material as it doesn't qualify as a hit) Neil Young "Greatest Hits" CD some months ago, now arrives an equally excellent greatest hits compilation of Crosby Stills & Nash.
"Greatest Hits" (19 tracks, 76 min.) thankfully is not worried about representing all phases of CSN's long career. It focuses on what the title implies: the greatest hits, nothing more, nothing less. As a consequence, you will find no songs from the more recent albums, in fact there is no music on here that is any more recent than 1982's "Daylight Again" album. The highlights are many. All but 3 tracks of the classic debut album are on here, as is about half of the "CSN" album. Even better, 3 non-Neil Young tracks from "Deja Vu" are on here. (To those wondering why "Woodstock" is not on here, Neil made it pretty much his song--courtesy of the blistering guitar solo, even though he didn't write the song.) The 1982 songs have aged surprisingly well: "Daylight Again", "Southern Cross" and "Wasted on the Way" are very easy on the ears. The remastered sound is outstanding.
So with the Neil Young Greatest Hits album and now the CSN Greatest Hits album in the bag, what remains to be done? How about an equally definitive single-CD Crosby Stills Nash & Young greatest hits compilation?
Free Music Review: Classic seventies rock group Hit: 5 Stars
David Crosby (ex-Byrds), Stephen Stills (ex-Buffalo Springfield) and Graham Nash (ex-Hollies) joined forces in 1968 and together created some of the finest rock music of their generation, sometimes with the help of Neil Young (ex-Buffalo Springfield). Tracks featuring Neil are not included here even though there are three tracks here from Déjà vu, an album that featured Neil.
The set opens with Stephen Stills' tribute to Judy Collins (Suite: Judy blue eyes) and ends with Daylight again, which features Art Garfunkel (a most welcome guest). In between these two great tracks are seventeen others of comparable brilliance including Marrakesh Express (their only UK hit), Long time gone (about Bobby Kennedy), Wooden ships (a thought-provoking song) and Wasted on the way (an American top ten hit).
Superb singing and great musicianship were the hallmarks of Crosby Stills and Nash, with or without Young. Fans will always argue about what should have been included, but this CD is full-length (no room for any more) and all nineteen tracks justify their inclusion. As an introduction to their music, this is brilliant. Buy a Neil Young compilation, or the Déjà vu album, to hear Neil Young's contribution to the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
Free Music Review: TEACH YOUR GREAT MUSIC! Hit: 5 Stars
I was one of those little long-haired hippie kids who was about 4 years old when the original CSN&Y albums began to show up. Needless to say, these songs were very often cranked up around my house then and I have very fond memories of that great period. Somewhere along the line I ended up with those original albums and they were always near the top of my collection and well loved, though not in great condition. There is something to say for just getting all of the original recordings (or a larger anthology) for a band as great as this, but one could find many a great reason to get this excellent compilation! It would be great for the car or even (for those who chucked the albums) to get a decent chunk of the better tracks on one filled up cd. The sound quality is very good and playing this 77 minute cd on a nice stereo will surely lift your spirits...you will glow afterwords, I promise! Everyone has a few favorites that didn't end up on here I'm sure, but the song selection is decent. It does say C,S&N not C,S,N&Y. Oh, and they included a nice 27 page booklet mostly relevant for the decent track notes. I would rather have lyrics than pages of pictures though...ENJOY!!
Free Music Review: The Classic Collection of "CSN"! Hit: 5 Stars
This remastered collection of "CSN"*Greatest Hits truly pays tribute to a band that will last forever. Nineteen classics grace this album and the re-mastering is amazing. Every song sounds fresh, from the seven-and-a-half minute, "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" to the anthemic, "Carry On/Questions". Of course, the clever ditties of "Our House" and "In My Dreams" are not forgotten and memories flow back with, "Marrakesh Express" and "Teach Your Children". The booklet is full of colorful collages and there is a complete rundown of each songs writer, vocalists and band player. There are an amazing number of famous studio musicians listed as well. Event the dates of each songs recording are included. The only real surprise is the tribute to `Mama' Cass Elliot, "without whom most of this music may never have been made". Good job to Graham Nash and Joel Bernstein for compiling this masterpiece.
