Free Music Notes for Happiness and All The Other Things [15th Anniversary Deluxe Limited Edition]

Free Music Review: AMAZING...STUNNING...RIDICULOUSLY GOOD...ALL GEMS...CCR's best album yet!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm telling ya I was completely FLOORED how great Ragweed's latest album is...every track a gem. I've been a Ragweed fan since I happened upon "Purple" in 2000, and I've been a loyal follower ever since...getting every album they released, and finally seeing them live and loud over a year ago...they don't come to NY that much...their following is generally concentrated in the South and Southwest, around their hometurf of Oklahoma and Texas, but that's cool, as many of America's best bands are from there, like OKC's Flaming Lips and Tulsa's Hanson...BUT Oklahoma has the occasional stinker act too like Garth Brooks and Carrie Underwood and now Trisha Yearwood.

Anyhoo, back to Ragweed...I consider them an hardrocking, powerpoppy alternative country band, or a twangy rock & roll band, Southern style...Red Dirt?? Makes no sense...they're a VERY LOUD rock & roll band, period. And they are definitely not a country radio act either; Cody, Grady, Rags and Jeremy don't stoop to such a low level...if anything, modern rock stations who have a taste for southern-flavoured bands like Kings Of Leon or My Morning Jacket, or even REM and the Gin Blossoms or Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers should play CCR too...bout time they did because this album has songs that could fit well in that format.

This new album, "Happiness And All The Other Things", is mindbogglingly good...I was at a loss for words when I heard gems like my fave song on the album, "Burn Like The Sun"...my jaw hit the floor!! I have to admit, their last album, "Mission California", was very good, but it didn't hit me like I hoped it would and it was a bit heavy on the blues and the ballads, although tunes like "NYCG", "Smoke Another" and "Oklahoma" were great...I loved the album before it, "Garage"...my fave up to that point, with that great powerpop gem "Fightin' For"...this new one tops that, even possibly "Purple" and "Highway 377"!!! From first song to last, it never lets up in song quality..."51 Pieces" rocks from the getgo, "Bluebonnets" is beautiful, "Burn Like The Sun" could be song of the year, like a great lost Jayhawks song, the single "Kick In The Head" is cool...I woulda picked "Burn" as the first single, maybe it'll be one down the road, every single song stuns effortlessly, and even the unlisted bonus track and Warren Zevon cover "Carmelita" is sweet and done Gram Parsons-style...these guys have always had great taste in covers...there is a second unlisted track, "Poopeye", but that's only a 4-second guitar goof...I love that on EVERY album, there is an unlisted bonus track or two...inspired by Todd Snider...the 3 live tracks are great too, acoustic as well, one being a Willie Nelson cover of "Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground", dedicated to their friend and booster, "Poodie Locke", who was Willie Nelson's loyal roadie for 35 years and recently passed...I'm sure he was a cool dude.

Anyhoo, I knew this album was going to be good...they never put out a bad record...but I did NOT think it was going to be THIS good, wow!!

And I love the contents...the artwork is great, by new collaborator and guest on this record, Stephanie Briggs, who sang harmony, wrote a bunch and plays piano all over the album...a new first and a rich flavourful addition to Ragweed's sound...maybe she'll play live with them on their next tour??? Anyhoo, it's a nice softpack with a booklet of lyrics attached to the middle, and 2 pockets, one for the CD, and one for a cool commemorative poster...one side having all the pre-Happiness album covers, and the other an INTERVIEW with the guys about all their albums and full career...great informative and fun reading...I loved how when Willie Nelson saw the album cover of "Live At Billy Bob's Texas", he started singing Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"..."I see a little silhouette...", and I looked at the cover and dropped dead laughing...like wow, they DO look like Queen circa 1975!! Hahaha.

Anyhoo, this album is proof of how great CCR is as a band...how much of a secret they are...marketing's the only explanation...and how much they truly love and appreciate their fans and friends and families...I feel honoured to be a fan and friend of Cross Canadian Ragweed.

So far, they've been a band for 15 years??? Bring on another 15...as Cody Canada asks, "If you're doing what you love and you can feed your family, why stop doing it???" Now, I'm not religious at all...I'm an atheist...but this is very fitting...God bless Cross Canadian Ragweed.

PERIOD!!

Happiness and All The Other Things [15th Anniversary Deluxe Limited Edition] Poster

USA Today proclaims that "(Cross Canadian Ragweed) is one of the better-kept secrets around."

But not a secret for much longer, as their seventh studio album, Happiness and All The Other Things, amply proves. The 12-track opus opens with a one/two punch/kiss combo that sets the band's wide parameters: The fiercely rocking road tale "51 Pieces" followed by a sweet taste of the Texas Hill Country springtime on "Bluebonnets," whose sparse and lovely arrangement features harmonium by Joe Hardy (the star recording engineer who mixed the album) and dobro by noted musician and producer Lloyd Maines (also the father of Dixie Chick Natalie Maines). And then it only gets better.

Marking the band's 15th year together, Happiness and All The Other Things follows on the heels of Mission California, which hit #6 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart and #30 on the Top 100 week of release. The band has sold over one million albums and plays over 250 shows annually, rocking an estimated half a million fans this year alone.

CD BONUS MATERIAL includes: Commemorative retrospective poster, three live bonus tracks (Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground, Train To Birmingham, Soul Agent), two hidden tracks (Carmelita, Poopeye), live video download (Confident).
