Free Music Notes for Recurring Dream: The Very Best Of Crowded HouseFree Music Review: If you don't know CH, start with this Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great introduction to people out there who might only know CH from the two hits in 1987. If that's all you know, then you are in for a real treat. Other than the ommission of "Nails in My Feet" this is almost a perfect "Best of" album. Neil Finn is quite simply a songwriter on par with Lennon/McCartney and I do not feel that to be an exaggeration. Actually, Paul has fallen into banalities of late and could probably have Neil remind him of what it is to have an "edge" The songs here range from gentle ballads to more uptempo pieces. Although CH never totally rock, they come close, which some might find a surprise. Lyrical content runs the gamut from introspective pieces, to febrile hallucinations, to anthems to sexual release (albeit in a very sweet endearing fashion with just a little bit of that "edge") If you think you would like to hear more of CH but don't yet want to make the commmitment to buying their full albums, pick this one up. After you have listened to it five or more times, you'll find yourself reaching for it more and more. Once that starts, check out the aforementioned "Nails in My Feet" then just buy the rest of their albums. Get ready to drink the Crowdie Kool-Aid.
Free Music Review: Recurring Phases of Moods and Themes Hit: 5 Stars
One night i was working late, Being tired and stressed out from work i turned on the radio to keep me company and to keep me awake. that night was the first time i heard "fall at you feet" by crowded house. it totally convinced me to buy the single. I later found out they were out of stock so i just bought the album Recurring Dream. The first time i listened to it I hated it except for the song "fall at your feet." but as days went, the CD grew on me. I hadnt realised how exceptionally good the lyrics and beats were until five weeks after i had bought the album. the songs that mostly grew on me were... "Dont Dream its Over" "Distant Sun" and "Pineapple Head." Day after day the rank of this CD in my album rank goes up. Within weeks it had become my favourate Album. the themes and moods in the tracks could be described as... Mysterious, passionate, heartfelt, sad, sorrowful, joyful and loving. after i bought this i became a fan of crowded house, not instantly but slowly. i would recomend this to any who seek easy meaningful songs with wickedly good tunes.
Free Music Review: Music for a Kiwi driving adventure! Hit: 5 Stars
Beautiful songs, engaging and intelligent lyrics, and melodies you'll find yourself humming hours after hearing the songs. As "greatest hits" collections go, this is one of the best - packed from start to finish with great music. My wife and I spent two weeks driving through Crowded House's home country of New Zealand a few years back, and for most of the trip, this was THE album we listened to. It just kept finding its way back into the player. Besides the well known hit songs ("Don't Dream It's Over," "Somthing So Strong), some of the tracks which stand out as brilliant include "Weather With You," "World Where You Live," "Fall at Your Feet," "Private Universe," and "Mean to Me." These just happen to be my favorites. Sure, some of the 19 songs on this CD are "better" than others - but none are sub-par. There are no fillers. If you're debating whether or not to spend your hard earned $$ on this CD, think of all the albums you've paid ... for - just to get one or maybe two decent songs. With "Recurring Dream," you'll get 19 songs that you'll actually want to listen to again! Not a bad deal.
Free Music Review: beautiful, soaring, exciting pop/rock Hit: 5 Stars
When I first listened to this disk, I could knew one Crowded House song (Don't Dream It's Over), which is a great song, but I didn't know the band. A friend recommended this disk, which I listened to the first time at work. I didn't get anything done for that hour, and if CD's could wear out, I'd long ago have needed to replace this one.
Crowded House may not be a major band - one MTV hit, a couple of radio hits, and they're real big in New Zealand (where they are from) - but they are one of greats. Reminiscent at times of (OK, I know, this gets thrown around too often, but it's true) the Beatles (in their mid-years - think Rubber Soul) and The Ocean Blue, they can mellow with the best (Not the Girl You Think You Are, Four Seasons in One Day). When they choose to rock (Locked Out), the maintain musical and lyrical integrity. Weather With You is an indescribable joy.
Perhaps not for metalheads, but anyone who likes sophisticated (but not overly complex) arrangements, thoughtful lyrics, and spotless, emotional performance will love this.
Free Music Review: You Won't Forget Hit: 5 Stars
There isn't much that I would brand as a "part of my life" in the abstract sense. Certainly family, friends, and my career as a musician come to mind. When my sister began listening obsessively to "that old 80's band," Crowded House, several years ago, I never would have believed how much I would come to respect and enjoy their music. As lead singer Neil Finn has said (and he hits it right on the nose), us Americans generally don't take the time to listen to something repeatedly. We want our hooks to "hit us right between the eyes." What a mistake I made in falling into that trap. Crowded House's music will now forever occupy a corner of my being. As simply as I can say it, this music is painfully good. There's real emotion here, and I used to think that was a realm reserved for classical music. Mahler said, "My time has not yet come." Crowded House could say the same. Someday a more diversified audience will recognize them for what they were--some of the finest music of the 20th century.
