Free Music Notes for Recurring Dream: The Very Best Of Crowded House

Free Music Review: Crowded House, we hardly knew ye
Hit: 5 Stars

They only lasted a decade, but in that short time Crowded House managed to release four sterling pop/rock albums, each with a different soundscape; their jangly, boisterous debut, the beautifully eerie "Temple of Low Men," the meticulously-crafted "Woodface," and "Together Alone," wild as the New Zealand coast near which it was recorded. Fans of pop gems like "Don't Dream It's Over" and "Better Be Home Soon" will have plenty to sing along with, but there are just as many forays into un"chart"ed territory: lead singer Neil Finn seems to channel George Harrison on "Not the Girl You Think You Are"; log drummers add Maori polyrhythms to "Private Universe." For the collector, there are three brand new tracks featuring former Crowdie Paul Hester back on drums. In short, "Recurring Dream" will make you want to come back to the House over and over again.

Free Music Review: Crowded with great songs, in a nutshell
Hit: 5 Stars

Its no surprise that 125 000 people gathered on the steps of the Sydney Opera House to say goodbye to one of the best loved pop bands of the late 80's, early 90's.

They remind me a bit of Travis these days- elegantly crafty songs sung in the most heartwarming fashion by a singer/strummer, who also happens to write the songs.

Those 125 000 people were treated to hits such as 'Better Be Home Soon' and 'Something so Strong'... and just about the entire Crowded House back catalogue, which is definitely crowded with hit songs.

From the plain beautiful (Fall at Your Feet), to the anthemic (Don't Dream it's over) to rawk- (Locked Out), Crowded House wrote terrific, insanely fetching songs that drew comparisons to the Beatles at their poptastic 'I Want to Hold your Hand' best.

They might have shied away from the 'Biggest Band in the World' title, but on these songs, if they wanted it, they could have had it any old day. Easy.

Free Music Review: i never grow tired of this album
Hit: 5 Stars

It's difficult for me to even think that Crowded House could be considered an "80s" band. Indeed, they gained popularity in the 80s, but that would be where any other consideration of 80s music would end. Their music is far from "pop" or "80s".

Crowded House is poetic, soulful music. The music and lyrics crafted by Neil Finn are, to me, timeless and beautiful. Whenever a Neil Finn song shuffles through my iTunes playlist, it is just as "new" to me as the first time that I heard it. Yes, I wax poetic about Neil Finn, but I love his voice and his songs. I was fortunate (and determined) to see them perform in concert many times.

I own almost all of the albums written by Neil and Tim Finn. It's hard for me to judge, so I suggest that anyone that has an interest in learning more about these songwriters should select this album first. There isn't a dull or boring song on this CD. Each and everyone is wonderful.

Free Music Review: An exquisitely sensuous musical experience!
Hit: 5 Stars

From the first note struck on the otherworldly "Weather with You", I was completely wrapped up in the music of Crowded House. Such rich, sensuous, lush, acoustic and orchestral numbers fill this "Best of" cd.

In fact, this cd has one of the strongest openings i have ever heard: "Weather with You," "World Where You Live," "Fall At Your Feet." Along with "Don't Dream It's Over" and "Distant Sun", these are some of the most engrossing songs i have ever listened too.

There is just some indescribable quality of Crowded House's music that sets it apart...so melancholic and yet so joyful, so simple and yet so rich and multitextured, surreal and dreamlike. Those who compare this group to an inferior Beatles are sadly mistaken; the only songs even remotely resembling those of the Beatles are "Not the Girl You Think You Are" and "Instinct", and even these are good enough to stand alone.

This band is unlike any other!

Free Music Review: Haunting songs That Linger WithYou...
Hit: 5 Stars

After repeated listenings, the album lingered hauntingly in my mind, like any great film or book...in fact if I were to take only three CD's to a desert island, this would be one...the other two would be Harrison's Best of Dark Horse and Exitos de Juan Luis Guerra...however, on this exquisite collection, we have "Weather With You" which winds along with great harmonies....another beautiful track is "Fall At Your Feet"...and then there is the hit song"Don't Dream It's Over"...I personaly love "Pineapple Head" which sounds Beatlesque with a Pacific Tropic feel..."Distant Sun" deserves repeated play to apppreciate.....as do many other tunes...there are three tunes here not found on the other Crowded House LP's and also available for fans is the import edition which carries a bonus disc of live materiel well worth the extra bucks....highly recommmended....
