Free Music Review: Crowded Studio - The Studios Strike Back
Hit: 4 Stars

Did no one else see any beauty in 'All I Ask'? What a SONG - legend has it that Tim only did one take of the vocals on this song! Other than that, a very good album that would have tugged more at the coat tales of greatness had Youth come on board as producer on album earlier than he did - Mitchell Froom left it just a tad over-produced. Note also the thank you to their 'herbal distributor' The Rabbi in the album sleeve!

Free Music Review: Pretty Damn Good
Hit: 4 Stars

I picked up Woodface in a Dollar Bin at the flea Market as soon as I saw it, as if I had found a hidden gem and if I were to let go it would immidiatly be stolen. Now that may have been a little far fetched but it WAS a good find. This CD is something that you can pop in and let go. As you'r going about your business whilst listening to this album you will pause and say, "I liked that song" to every song. 'Nuff Said.

Free Music Review: Sheen & Shine
Hit: 3 Stars

Crowded House understand the craft of songwriting and record-making in a way miles beyond most of their generation. The first three tracks on this LP, along with "Four Seasons In One Day," are as well-crafted as you'll ever hear.

But it's the band's dependence on craft that keeps this LP from being a great one. There is a self-conciousness here that is hard to get past. The message that these are men at work, crafting product, honing their craft, is never overcome by any kind of passion or exhuberence.

This is XTC with the fun surgically removed. They don't sound like they particularly enjoy what they're doing.

It's their job.

Free Music Review: Crowded House go glossy
Hit: 3 Stars

The best thing about Woodface is that Neil and Tim Finn collaborated to produce some wonderfully enduring songs. The problem is the album is a mish-mash of edgy Crowded House tunes and slickly produced Finn Brothers tunes. It's not sure what it wants to be, and, therefore lacks the coherence of the other Crowded House albums. Still, it beats most anything else out there, so it's a good buy.
