Free Music Review: The best of a great (short-lived) group
Hit: 5 Stars

With the Finn brothers together again, the group made their best record.

Unfortunately, their hopes of becoming a hit in the U.S.A. went unrealized as they received the same poor support from Capitol Records that had doomed their sales for the earlier two ventures. Additionally, they had included, as the first track, "Chocolate Cake," that described (quite accurately, I think) the U.S. as a materialistic behemoth on a sugar binge--in the arts, in our diet and, generally, in the way we consume everything in sight; consumption as a life and national goal. The unsophisticated mass market neither understood nor appreciated this message. Those who might have bought the album in spite of, or because of that number never heard it or heard of it. Soon, the Finns went to record their own album and Crowded House was no more.

BUT...this is a GREAT ALBUM with TERRIFIC SONGS; if you haven't heard it, do so--you might just like it as much as I!

Free Music Review: A classic
Hit: 5 Stars

If I were only allowed to have one CD, excluding compilations, this would be the one. I bought "Woodface" as soon as it was released in 1991 and loved it immediately. Amazingly, I continue to discover something new and wonderful about this CD every time I listen to it. The fact that something this outstanding has escaped the ears of most listeners in the US says something about the sad state of radio here. Maybe "Chocolate Cake" turned away radio and listeners, but it is a very clever song. "Fall at Your Feet", "Weather with You", and "Four Seasons in One Day" are the obvious standouts, but "Whispers and Moans", "It's Only Natural", and "Italian Plastic" are just as strong. There is not a weak link on this CD, and I often find myself humming songs from "Woodface" for no reason at all. I wonder how many other people do the same thing?

It seems many folks dislike "Chocolate Cake" but I always loved it and found it to be a brilliant commentary on american excess and a great way open the album. Oh well, to each his or her own, I suppose.

WOODFACE is briliant throughout, but you should own it. if for no other reason, for two songs: "Fall at Your Feet" and "Four Seasons in One Day." I've not read all the reviews here, but I'm certain I'm not the first to praise these two beautiful tunes as the best pop songs recorded since the dissolution of The Beatles and the songwriting of Lennon and McCartney. Capitol dropped the ball on the Fabs many times: are we surprised that twenty years later they'd do the same with Crowded House? Where are those corporate morons' ears?

Sorry for the rant. Suffice to say: buy WOODFACE. It's a gorgeous work and you will love it from the moment you hear it.

Free Music Review: A worthy follow-up to their previous material
Hit: 5 Stars

I do not think they could have begun the 90's with a work better than this. Perhaps the album is not quite as consistent and flowing as "Temple of Low Men", but the great lyricism is still there, together with a more modern look and sound. The sound is a little more polished and commercial, but the genius of the Finn brothers comes through strongly, especially in those tracks that you don't hear on the radio - for example "Italian Plastic" is my favourite from the album. Either way, one cannot be disappointed. Go and get it.

If you are new to Crowded House, and its memorable contributions to the pop and (soft) rock genre, then this is a great album to get first, but perhaps "Temple of Low Men" is a better starter, as it must be the pinnacle of all their work.

Free Music Review: One of the best
Hit: 5 Stars

Being a child of the 70's and 80's and a huge fan of the various genres of music written at the time, I'd long since made the decision that no band performed music even remotely reminiscient of the great bands of earlier eras - particularly the Beatles. Then, one day while I was rummaging through a record store, I heard some tracks from Woodface being played and instantly fell in love. This was my first real exposure to Crowded House. Since that day, I have gone through 3 copies of "Woodface" and have collected every other CH CD. They're truly a great band and Neil Finn's writing talent is second to none. The comparisons to the Beatles are not without merit. His creativity and ability to weave lyric with music is just astounding. This is one of the best CH efforts and I can't recommend it enough.
