Free Music Notes for WoodfaceFree Music Review: Pop Songwriting At It's Finest! Hit: 5 Stars
When Neil Finn invited big brother Tim of Split Enz fame to join Crowded House in 1990, the collaboration resulted in one of the great pop-rock albums of all time! Track after track, WOODFACE is awash with memorable melodies and Neil Finn's off-the-wall lyricism. The catchy and cheerful "It's Only Natural" is quite simply the best song The Beatles never wrote, while "Chocolate Cake," with it's stinging jabs at American and British consumerism, is as witty as it is cutting. "Fall At Your Feet" and "All I Ask," are gorgeous ballads in the best Finn Brothers tradition; both seem effortless yet both are endlessly affecting.
Neil Finn and CROWDED HOUSE have many fine albums to their credit, but WOODFACE is the band's masterpiece. Classic and essential.
Free Music Review: Incredible Album Hit: 5 Stars
Talk about an underated band! The spotlight on Crowded House seemed to quickly (and inexpliably) vanish after the success of "Something So Strong" and "Don't Dream It's Over" from their debut. Woodface is a crowning achievement in songwriting, production, arrangement, and performance. "Fall At Your Feet", "Chocolate Cake", "Tall Tree", and "Weather With You" are just a few of the classic songs on this album. It's a shame that Crowded House would go on to just have moderate success in the US in the late 80's and early 90's before eventually breaking up. This album is a must for any fan of creative pop music.
Free Music Review: Essential CD for a desert island. Hit: 5 Stars
I'm not normally a fan of pop music, but to me Neil Finn, and brother Tim, are in a league all their own. The combination of hauntingly beautiful melodies, impeccable harmonies, and thoughtful lyrics are virtually unsurpassed. All of the other Crowded House material is worth having in a CD collection, but to me this one is the best. And I think one of the reasons is the guest appearance of Tim Finn on the album. I've owned it since it came out in the early 90's, but still pull it out with regularity for a listen...and when I do, I usually listen to it twice because once just isn't enough. Definately one I'd wish to have on a desert island.
Free Music Review: Easy 5 Stars Hit: 5 Stars
A slightly new direction for Crowded House w/the addition of Tim Finn for his only appearance as a group member. The first two CH albums were pretty incredible, but this one went to a slightly higher level.I first heard "There Goes G-d" on the radio (albeit alternative radio), but when I got the CD, it just got better from there. "Four Seasons In One Day", "All I Ask", "As Sure As I Am" are pure Neil Finn. But the rest is great too. The only song that didn't do it for me was "Italian Plastic" - but even that isn't enough to knock it to 4 stars. Joe Bob says check it out.
Free Music Review: Great Listening Hit: 5 Stars
This is an album that has always been one of my personal favorites. Great song writing is one of this cd's strong points; partially due to the fact that both Finn brothers are on board for this. It is extremely melodic. It is certainly one of the better things vocally that I have heard. The harmony at times is quite stunning. It probably never received the recognition that it deserved. The production and sound are also done well. Some say that it is over produced, but I disagree. This album takes me away to another place every time I hear it. And after all, isn't that what any art form is supposed to do?
