Free Music Review: The Cure for run-of-the-mill Classic Rock

Back in '85, it all came together in a big way for The Cure when Robert Smith assembled a supremely talented band that quickly began to fulfill its full potential as a first-rate alternative pop group with THE HEAD ON THE DOOR. This was a huge album for me personally as it was the first truly alternative rock music I became totally absorbed with. It was such a revelation to find this intriguing world of possibilities beyond the standard classic rock radio fare. Only 14, I listened to this album all through this pivotal year and began earnestly exploring their back catalog. This album encompasses the various strengths of all their previous efforts, from super-catchy pop to dark morbidity and melancholy.
Breakdown:
"In Between Days" - the classic single featuring exuberantly strummed acoustic guitars, party-mad drumming and an uplifting melody tinged with characteristic Cure melancholy. Explores the "with or without you" theme two years before U2 did it. Previously shunned by Robert Smith, acoustic guitars effectively add new color to the Cure sound on this album. ****1/2
"Kyoto Song" - slow and brooding, this Oriental-flavored track is a swimmingly beautiful nightmare. *****
"The Blood" - Briskly strummed Spanish-tinged acoustic guitar, Middle-Eastern keyboards and passionate singing from Smith. "I am paralyzed by the blood of Christ/ Though it clouds my eyes/ I can never stop" . . . seems to be saying that even an obsession with something as potentially positive as Christianity can be harmful. *****
"Six Different Ways" - so creative, so quirky, so magical, loaded with strange melodies and sound effects. *****
"Push" - a fan favorite and I dig it too but it's a bit too much like a standard rock song and The Cure is so much better than that. ***3/4
"The Baby Screams" - Featuring a trippy keyboard loop, 80's-style drum machine claps and great guitar riffs. Cool song. ****1/4
"Close To Me" - killer pop song with a ticking, nervous energy like a terrified recluse tucked away in his room yet somehow having a ball. The version on STANDING ON A BEACH blows the taut atmosphere to hell towards the end with the appearance of manic jazz party horns. I eventually grew to love it. *****
"A Night Like This" - gorgeous, romantic song with stately power. *****
"Screw" - bizarre pop song with a badasss bass riff. Catchy as hell. ****1/2
"Sinking" - a haunting slab of desperate futility, the final cut is a depression rock masterpiece and a harbinger for the even more masterful gloom & doom found on DISINTEGRATION. *****

2006 digitally remastered two CD edition of the 1985 album by Robert Smith and co-horts. Disc One features the album in it's entirety and includes the radio hits 'In Between Days' and 'Close To Me'. Disc Two features an additional 18 bonus tracks including demos, live tracks and four previously unreleased songs. 28 tracks total. Deluxe package contains a 20 page booklet including sleevenotes with rare and previously unseen photographs. WEA.This is the Cure album to start with. Robert Smith and company's best and most coherent statement, The Head on the Door is a successful, if schizophrenic, synthesis of the best of '80s rock, boasting danceable Eurobeat anthems ("In Between Days"), world-music-flavored exotica ("Kyoto Song," the Latin-tinged "The Blood"), and more sullen statements of post-modern angst from the band that gave you such downer epics as Faith and Pornography. More than any other Cure album, Head rewards those who don't subscribe to the darker side of the group's ethos. The use of Spanish guitar and other colorful arrangement touches help to create a rich dynamic. The softer, more introspective cuts (like the claustrophobic "Close to Me," Smith's confessional classic) are also far more effective for them. --Don Harrison
