Free Music Notes for Join the Dots: B-Sides & Rarities 1978-2001

Free Music Review: Music Purchase of the Year!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

thank you Robert!!!!! i am a die-hard Cure fan. from my early 1983 days as a 15 year old high school freshman, to my 18 year old "Smith" styled hair and antics when I was front man for a local band in the DC area, to my present day age of 35 with a family. i love the old cure with all of the dark overtones and twisted lyrics, the quirkie Cure with all of the silliness and innocence, and the mature Cure with the essence of aging taking place. all personalities of the Cure are in Join The Dots: B-Sides and Rarities. this collection is simply put: The Music Purchase of the Year.

the packaging is beautiful. the booklet that is actually part of the package is wondeful. what a prsentation!!! it's all here. 4 CDs, over 300 + minutes of incredible music from The Cure, and it's all b-sides and rare trax. each disc has it's own mood....it's own atmosphere...it's own world...for you to explore again, or, for the very first time.

if you are a Cure fan, you owe it to yourself to purchase Join The Dots. the booklet that is actually part of the package is wondeful. what was behind the b-side Scared as You? how about Throw Your Foot? check out the background stories in the expanded linear notes...wonderful insight to every song in this set. there are great, colorful pictures...and then, there is the music. the very core of the entire purchase. from the the first notes of 10:15 Saturday Night to the close of the unreleased mix version of A Forest....it is indeed quite a ride.

i recently delved deep into all of my Cure music, and this collection, Join The Dots, is the cherry on top. i can't tell you enough....GO BUY THIS BOX />the sound quality is superb...all remastered. Plastic Passion has never sounded so good! Just One Kiss? fantastic. Babble? unbelievable.

hey Robert, if you're out there reading this, cheers mate. thanks for your music and words all of these years, and here's to many more. looking forward to the remasters of all studio albums and more unreleased trax!!

peace,

cicatelli

Free Music Review: GET IT, GOT IT? GOOD.
Hit: 5 Stars

Yes, I've given this collection five stars - and no, I haven't even got it yet. That's only because I am very, very broke at the moment - as in, settling down in front of the space heater to crunch on my Hamburger Helper without the hamburger. But I WILL be getting it, as soon as I can clench a few spare dollars and a sack of coins in my happy little hands. Oh yes, I will.

You see, I'm one of those fans - you know the type - with my wardrobe of faded black, RIT dye still ringing my fingernails, with a head full of lyrics to songs I've not even heard yet. This package is for folks like me. We've heard some of the songs, tracked down as many of the singles as our wallets permit (just for the extra bits unavailable on any album), scribbling down Want Lists on scraps of paper and dreaming of the day . . .

For every break-up that really meant something, the Cure was there. For every doomed love affair that we never got over, Robert provided the soundtrack. For every height we aspired to and every depth to which we sunk, our ears rang with these melodic truths. It was never enough to simply have DISINTEGRATION and WISH and KISS ME KISS ME KISS ME - no, there were so many other songs that cried out for inclusion on our bittersweet mix tapes. So many other sentiments that we'd hoped to share with our ill-fated love . . .

All those tracks from the orange mini-disc, I've never heard them.

Some of the b-sides that came before DISINTEGRATION, I've never been able to find.

To the Sky, I only caught the last half of it on radio late one night (and, when I called the next week to request it, the station had tragically lost it).

Some of the others from the later period, I've not even heard of them.

But now, they will be mine. Oh yes, all mine. I shall set aside an entire night, set aside my Hamburger Helper - and all of my present woes - and I will listen. I will fill up with the sounds and the words, and I will be transported, magically, into this other realm. The realm of the Cure.

And I will dream . . .

Free Music Review: Finally....the complete B-Sides !!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Ok....I don't have this box set yet, probably because I've made my own complete collection of all the B-Sides. Someday I'll remind myself to get this for the fact that it's an OFFICIAL release while mine is a mere creation of my own work. Anyway....this doesn't lose any stars for the fact that the Robert Smith has answered all the fans requests since 1998's release of 'Galore - The Singles 1987-1997'. If you remember, it was released on (Limited Edition vinyl, cassette, and CD). All formats were the same, meaning it didn't include ANY B-Sides from 1987-1997, don't know why, I guess we'll never know why. At any rate, fans were quite preturbed to discover this so called "cheat" to Cure fans. 'Standing on the beach / Staring At the sea - The Singles 1979-1985-86' included the B-Sides from '79-'85-'86 (cassette only). That is now out of print, and has been for some time now, 1995 to be precise. SO......without further ado, here you have the long out of print B-Sides 1979-1985, plus the long awaited B-Sides never before released in a collection of it's own, 1987-2001. "But...but....but....it doesn't have 'Carnage Visors', it doesn't have 'The Peel Sessions', uhhhh....it doesn't have the 'Curiosity' songs". GET OVER IT!!!! I'm sure Robert Smith is well aware of all this and will release it accordingly. For fans who have the albums Faith, Pornography, and Three Imaginary Boys'. You all know Rhino Records is releasing these in expanded editons, eventually. For all that are worried that they have to shell out more money for songs they already have, do it anyway. "But what am I going to do with the copies of those albums I already have", here's a novel idea, there's a site called 'Ebay', and services within' 'Amazon' to accomodate your needs, use them!! I'm sure any newbie to 'The Cure' will be most honored, and gracious to buy your old copies. This collection 'Join The Dots' has been set out to do exactly what it's supposed to do, to compliment the material that hasn't been released on any of The Cure's albums!

Free Music Review: A Must Have For Cure Fanatics
Hit: 5 Stars

The Cure. Join the Dots: B-Sides & Rarities, 1978-2001
I give this boxed set of the Cures B-Sides and rarities five stars because it collects all together another side of this amazing band for Cure fanatics in a very attractive and informative package. I owned some of these B-sides, but a lot of it I didn't have and some of it wasn't released until now so as a huge Cure fan I was really happy to receive this as a Christmas present. The quality of the music is at times uneven, but that's virtually a given considering this is a collection of B-Sides and rare tracks. If you have the first collection of the Cure's videos, the VHS tape Staring at the Sea, then you will recognize many of these tracks as the music they used for the background soundtrack during the footage they showed between each video. Robert Smith's occasionally spiteful humor is hilariously showcased by the faux German on "Do the Hansa" which was a pisstake against their first label who wanted to turn them into a cute boy cover band. Similarly, to fulfill their contract with Electra in the U.S., they turned in a eleven second (!!!) version of their cover of the Doors "Hello I love You". (They later turned in a proper, more conventional version. All three versions they recorded are included.) I originally thought that the boxed set was indeed a box, but instead like other box sets it is a sturdy book with the four CDs on the inside of the covers with a 78 page booklet in the middle of the spine detailing how these tracks fit into the history of the Cure. The text of the booklet (which is printed on very heavy paper) is placed over numerous photos of the band (some of which I had never seen before now) and of the single jackets, ala how Ten Imaginary Years was produced. In fact, in some ways the booklet could be seen as a sequel to TIY, at least until a longer version is hopefully released. If you're a dedicated Cure fan then this collection is a must have.

Free Music Review: Exhaustive.
Hit: 5 Stars

An exhaustive overview of pretty much all b-sides and rarities by the Cure during their tenure on Fiction Records (1978-2001), "Join the Dots" is a critical collection for fans. Around five hours of rare Cure music is contained within the four CDs of the set, and while some of the material left out can be annoying (more on that in a minute), this is a superb resource for any of us who try and gather the entire output of a band.

The set runs chronologically, providing a fine overview of the band's career as much as anything else. The Cure always seemed to fill their b-sides with interesting material, from the early days (jaunty, clean tone punky "Plastic Passion") to much later (the absolutely superb "Sugar Girl"). Like many bands, in teh '90s the Cure became involved with tribute albums ("Purple Haze") and soundtracks ("Burn", "Dredd Song"). Some great performances ended up on these, "Burn" in particular from the Crow is highly regarded, and while there are bound to be some things you won't care for (for me it's the occasional 12" remix and some of the b-sides that just sound incomplete and unmemorable like "Halo"), it'll be someone else's goldmine.

The only really noticably missing stuff on here are the a-sides-- "Killing An Arab", "Charlotte Sometimes", et.al. While these have all been released in one fashion or another, it'd be nice to see all of them collected in a convenient (and remastered!) package as some of them never ended up on albums.

Per usual good boxed set standards, the entire set has been rematered-- it sounds great, crisp and clear with an opportunity to really appreciate the subtleties of the pieces, and includes extensive liner notes about each disc and a detailed discography.

I can't imagine anyone but a real diehard of the band would want this, but for those of us who fall in that category, "Join the Dots" is a great set. Recommended.
