Free Music Notes for Sleep When I'm Dead (Mix 13)Free Music Review: Monotonous, but has it's moments Hit: 3 Stars
I read in an interview with Rolling Stone that Robert Smith recently found "Sleep When I'm Dead," which was a demo from the recording sessions of The Head on the Door, which is, in my eyes, The Cure's best album to date. What that said to me was that this song was going to be another classic along the lines of "In Between Days," "A Night Like This," "Push," or any song off of THOTD.
Oh, how wrong I was.
It isn't that the song is bad, it just doesn't really go anywhere. It stays in the same mood and, instead of offering any sort of push forward in The Cure's sound, Robert Smith just croons some of the worst lyrics that he has written in his nearly 30-year career ("In a monkey suit again/Having fun with all your friends" is a perfect example). However, the song does have a few good moments, such as a lyrical reference to one of the band's best songs, Push, (at least I think it's a reference), and the music itself is good.
I have heard some people refer to the b-side, "Down Under," as the best b-side off of the 3 singles that have been released so far for the band's upcoming 13th album. I feel, however, that it's the worst one: the lyrics are easily forgettable, and, if it had made it onto the upcoming album, I can see it as a filler track. At least the A-side of the single has a good rhythm to it and the music is good, but "Down Under" is just one of those songs that I find myself forgetting at the end of the day.
All in all, I would recommend buying the singles for The Only One (good) and Freakshow (great), and wait to hear "Sleep When I'm Dead" once the 13th album comes out. However, if you've already bought this single, and wish to hear where it comes from, make sure to buy The Head On The Door if you haven't already.
Free Music Review: Didn't impress me Hit: 2 Stars
The production of the new Cure material leaves a lot to be desired. Where it lacks in meledy and song structure, there's an attempt to make up for it with loud, over the top vocals that nearly make your ears bleed. Sleep when I'm dead could have been an awesome song as lyrically it's one of Robert's better tracks, but I find it very abrasive and difficult to listen to. Down Under is catchy but sort of blah. Not a typical blow your mind Cure b-side. I'm not all that impressed. The Cure need to stop trying to be edgy and whatever the heck they're attempting and just stick with the type of production and engineering that has worked for them. The new singles sounds a lot like their previous self titled album. So if you dug that you'll dig this. I long for the more mesmerizing and melodic sounds of past albums like Bloodflowers or Wish which highlighted Robert's voice better than the current mix and production. I'm not living in the past, but Robert needs to stick with what makes his vocals pleasant and appealing instead of the angry in your face stuff he's been recording.
Free Music Review: Sleep when I'm drunk Hit: 2 Stars
Let me begin by saying I've been a cure fan since 1985. Next I would like to say that The Cure will always have a place in my heart. Now let me be frank, if Robert thinks his new album material is good stuff he must be inebriated. I keep reading interviews with Bob where he says the album release delays are due to his efforts to make this the perfect album, and that we will be surprised at how "in your face" the contents are. This must be a euphemism because the only thing that is in your face after drinking that much is the crapper! Sorry Bob, so far I only like about 5% of your new stuff. The sad thing is you will still separate me and my money because there is always a chance you will have at least one magical song that is worth the entire price of the album. The other sad thing is there used to be only one or two through away songs per album. Maybe you should retire and leave my nostalgia intact!
Free Music Review: Try harder or give up and go away Smithy Boy & Co. Hit: 1 Stars
After having followed The Cure since seeing them on the Pornography tour in 1982, the latest releases can only be described as the most dismal nonsense ever released. Here we have yet another single to add to the last 2 uninspired releases, all 3 now only serve to confirm that The Cure are band that has lost it's way, has no idea in which direction they are going in and seem to find it worthwhile to release drivel just to keep insulting their fanbase. Perhaps they need the money to ensure that the pension contributions are being paid? Who knows? But the last releases are simply shocking. The Cure now seem to rely more on their cult status to keep them going as the standard of songwriting is now at such a purile level that it is embarassing. It is stunningly clear that Robert Smith had writers block when recording these tracks. Uniunspired, boring, re-hashed rubbish is what this can only be described as.
I thought that I would never say it but it really time that Robert Smith & Co realise that they have their time and it's time to stop inflicting this rubbish on us. This release adds nothing to The Cure's repertoire and only serves as a confirmation that they should had stopped after Bloodflowers was released. the only cure left for The Cure is to let themselves be put down. It seems the only humanitarian thing left to do to them.
Try harder or give up and go away Smithy Boy & Co. Boat number 13, please come in, your time is up.
Free Music Review: We're doomed Hit: 1 Stars
Eight songs now, and seven are unlistenable. Both of these songs are slapdash messes of old Cure signature sounds all jumbled together without any hint of a cohesive melody. I defy you to hum either of these songs.
The CD is going to be a major disappointment, we know that now, a song or three for the archives at best. It's really a bummer, I can't imagine what he was thinking releasing this material. And where are his friends, didn't anyone around him have the courage to tell him how bad it was? And if so, why didn't he listen?
Ah well, writing music is the most difficult art of all, and few, if any, have maintained their spark into middle age. It's just that after doing it so well for so long; there was still hope. Dashed.
