Free Music Notes for The Ugly OrganFree Music Review: I hate sad indie rock. I LOVE this. Hit: 5 Stars
"The Ugly Organ" was a birthday gift from a good friend, and it only took one listen to make it onto my "IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS, YOU HAVE NO SOUL" album list. Cello, keyboards and stark guitar dissonance add to the album's overall mood of soul-crushing darkness, something far sadder than sorrow. "The Ugly Organ" is probably the darkest CD in my collection, beating out my numerous goth and doom metal albums.
Almost every track on its own is capable of dishing out the chills to listeners, particularly the album's closer, "Staying Alive," which can only be classified as "epic," "haunting," and "effing brilliant." All the greatest elements and quirks found throughout the other songs on the album come together in "Staying Alive" - cello, choir, strings, the whole shebang. Most of the songs are on the short side, but each is a tiny work of storytelling art that deserves to be preserved in a glass case for the rest of all eternity.
Free Music Review: Art may be hard, but not for Cursive Hit: 5 Stars
Cursive creates music in a genre entirely of its own. Their undefinable sound is perhaps closest related to bands such as thrice...but they're more melodic...or perhaps sparta...but their lyrics are more intelligent, not to mention biting and sarcastic... One cannot place an album such as this in any specific genre of music, it must be known for it's greatness alone. I bought this album on the day it came out, having been a big fan of Cursive's earlier work, and was not disappointed in the least. The Ugly Organ is a masterpiece in itself, ranging in emotion from biting sarcasm and sneering vocals, to the last track's softer side, ending the album with soaring vocals and orchestaral swirls in addition to Gretta's ever present cello, which seems to bring each song together. So go out and support the pinnicle of indie/emo and but this album! you won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: Wonderful Yes, Domestica Quality No Hit: 5 Stars
This record is total ownage. I, nor anyone for that matter, can disagree with the two prior reviews ... on any point, that is, other than that this album is better than Domestica. Songs like "Harold Weathervein" and "Butcher the Song" are just too disonant and unmelodic for my taste. Nevertheless, the lyrics of those two songs are so unrighteously(Yes, I know) good that I can listen to them repeatedly. On the flipside, "The Recluse", "Art Is Hard", "Driftwood", and "Staying Alive" have great melodies and crazy good lyrics, but Domestica had that in every song. My only other complaint with this record is that it seems *too* fairy tale-esque, maybe that's because I mostly listen to it while playing DAoC, who knows. Five stars, regardless.
Free Music Review: Quite Possibly the Best CD of 2003 Hit: 5 Stars
I know it may seem a little early to make the claim that this is the best CD of 2003, but once you listen to it, you'll see that my claim is most certainly justified. The first full-length since 2000's Domestica is a wonderous piece of art. Songs such as "Art Is Hard" and "Driftwood: A Fairy Tale" show a remarkable amount of lyrical talent from frontman Tim Kasher, and the presence of Gretta Cohn's cello does wonders for the music. I had heard a lot about Cursive before listening to this album, which was the first I heard from them. Needless to say, after listening, I could easily understand why they had been so greatly hype. If you want a piece of damn-near perfect indie rock, it would be wise of you to pick up The Ugly Organ.
Free Music Review: Beyond A Concept Album Hit: 5 Stars
I don't know where to start. I'm so enthralled and totally amazed by the lyrics in this album. It's truly hard to find bands like this today. Tim Kasher is amazing, his style of whisper and sudden break of raw emotion is refreshing and honest. I would go through and describe each song but that would definatly tarnish the album for anyone who has not heard it. The album is definatly dark but fades to hope in the most inspiring way. I don't know many bands that have this much originality. Guitar and cello arrangements in Cursive's music, is just plain beautiful. I just want to thank Cursive and Saddle Creek for that matter, for giving me the chance to experience music like this.
