Free Music Notes for The Ugly Organ

Free Music Review: simply amazing
Hit: 5 Stars

What a way to start my year - musicwise. If there isn't anything else worth listening to this year - I'll still be happy with the year in music. . . .all because of this CD.
I've liked Cursive for a while, and was really excited when 'Burst & Bloom' was released with the new addition of Gretta Cohn on cello. There was a new depth brought to the band.
But this. . .remarkable.
I can't make any real points or much sense. . .all I keep thinking are words like : beautiful, epic, amazing, raw, hopeful, helpless. . . blah blah blah.

Just GET IT.

Take it from me, someone who doesnt even like the genre that this band gets lumped into: BUY THIS ALBUM. Buy it that is, if youre the listener who likes rediculously complicated melodies, musical depth, and experimentation with tones and also just random noise. Cursive has found a way to mix two guitars, bass, and a cello, and come up with one completely original sound that is beautiful yet gut-wrenching at the same time. The only way to describe this record, is that it is something that is a mix of extremely ugly sounds to make completely gorgeous music.

Free Music Review: Like a soundtrack waiting for a movie...

This is what happens when people want to make post-avant-art-emo-jazz-whatever-punk music and do it with craft and care to bring it above the normal standards. The production is perfect: not too slick, not too poor. This is what happens when people really care about their music, in my opinion and just make it groovy, rockin' and dramtic. The cello and chimes/bells make it very cool. In a certain sense, this is like what bands like "Godpseed You Black Emperor" might sound like if they had a vocalist (who's got a nice sound as well).

Two words pretty much sum up this album... Tim Kasher. This guy is INCREDIBLE. He has put together a band with so many great qualities that he is able to write such beautifully abrasive music filled with time-changes, off-kilter rhythyms, and sheer guitar brutality. The addition of Greta Cohn's cello really deepens the basslines and fills the space between the other instruments. Make no mistake, this is a BIG, deep record with many layers and a borderline inaccessible sound (ie. no singles save "The Recluse"). One of the best of 2003.

Cursive has perfected the art of creating a chaotic masterpiece in which each element makes perfect sense. They have defined an oxymoron musically. This, in my opinion, is Saddle Creeks finest (www.saddle-creek.com) -by far. Tim Kashers lyrics will touch you deeply if you take the time to listen. However, I think it is the story that the music tells that will really catch your ear.
PS- Don't burn this CD from a friend! It is worth it to have the CD booklet, you will appreciate the CD more if you know where it is coming from!
