OMG! What an amazing album! Cyndi is definitely getting better & better with age!"At Last" is certainly worth the wait. Not only does Cyndi portray a much more defined voice, but she's recreated herself as a Diva. She has always been a Diva, way back then in Blue Angel, but she's right up there at the top with the top Diva's of Pop & Adult Contemporary. I always enjoyed Cyndi's more matured, cultured voice, and this time, she's stunned me. Just the other night, I saw the video for "At Last", on our local video channel. I was flipping channels, and came across this wonderful accoustic number. I had to flip back to that channel, because it was just so amazing to see & hear Cyndi doing something like this. Not only does Cyndi belt it out...but she's got the body to go with her fabulous "Diva" voice. The CD is phenomenal and should be a classic. Not only is Cyndi's voice stellar, but the whole package is perfect... (timing, arrangements & heartfelt emotion). What a wonderful way to showcase Cyndi's incomparable voice! She's really a powershouse of timeless tunes! Of course, Cyndi's visual and vocal interpretations have always gone hand in hand. When has she ever been "just another pop singer"? Since her "Twelve Deadly Cyns" CD, I think she's just got better & better with age, like a good vintage wine. I recommend that you buy "At Last". You certainly won't regret this purchase. I don't really have a particular favourite track. Okay...if I must...my fave has to be "At Last", because it really hits close to home, especially when you can compare her "crooning" in this song, to her rendition of "I'm gonna be strong", found on her "Twelve Deadly Cyns" CD. I got a kick out of hearing Cyndi singing "Makin' Whoopie", because she can be really jazzy and "vegas" when she wants to be. This particular song reminds me of the duet she did with "Frank Sinatra, titled "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". "If you go away" has found a place in my heart, not only because Cyndi sings it, but because a few years ago, Shirley Bassey made a remix CD of her older songs, and this one particular song really touched me. I love the lyrics...what can I say? LOL I was a little concerned about Cyndi and her record label deal thing since the past 2 years. "At Last" has come out really late, since her last album release "Sisters of Avalon". But it was worth the wait! I wasn't really a big fan of music like this, and have always put it at the back of my head. I didn't ever have a Nina Simone album, but I do love Nina's "My baby just cares for me". But Cyn brings out the emotion to this, and every song very well. Great Job Cyn!!!!! I hope this album puts you back on top where you belong! Here's the tracklisting: 1. At Last 2. Walk On By 3. Stay 4. La Vie En Rose 5. Unchained Melody 6. If You Go Away 7. Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do) 8. My Baby Just Cares For Me 9. Makin' Whoopee - Duet with Tony Bennett 10. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood 11. You've Really Got A Hold On Me 12. Hymn To Love 13. On The Sunny Side Of The Street Okay...let's talk about the packaging. The CD comes in a nice matte digi-pack box. I'm not 100% crazy for digi-packs, because they don't withstand a lot of wear & tear, but they are more "pro-environment". And the pictures inside are gorgeous. Cyndi certainly doesn't look her age. I'm really happy for her. The images of the city through the window, is really nice. I love the deep blue color and the clarity of the image. Sometimes a digi-pack will be really badly printed, and the image will be all pixellated, but this one's mighty fine. :-) I appreciate having the liner notes booklet, because it's always fun to follow along with lyrics to timeless tunes such as these. I don't know if all of you have, or will have a booklet with all the lyrics, but mine sure does. So, with all this said, i think you should go and buy "At Last". Like I said, it's certainly worth the $ and the wait!
At Last PosterThe girl who just wanted to have fun has matured into a sensitive interpreter of eclectic standards. Taking a cue from Rod Stewart Cyndi Lauper applies her formidable pipes to an eclectic collection of covers that range from a few Edith Piaf tunes ("La Vie En Rose" and "Hymn to Love") to classics from the songbooks of Bacharach/David, Etta James, and Smokey Robinson. Although there are some upbeat tracks such as the remarkably authentic Specials-styled ska of a radically reworked "Sunny Side of the Street," a rather forced but fun duet with Tony Bennett on "Makin? Whoopee," and the cha-cha, Ricky Ricardo-ized version of Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs' "Stay," the album predominantly floats in a sober, pensive mood. Piano and subtle orchestrations add tension to sensitive readings of "Unchained Melody," "Don?t Let Me Be Misunderstood," and an eerily somber "Walk on By." The effect is haunting and intimate as Lauper unleashes her inner Tori Amos. Shifting "You?ve Really Got a Hold on Me" into an aching ballad, the singer shows her remarkable vocal range and interpretive ability. Lauper's voice sparkles throughout, especially without the overproduction that has marred some of her previous efforts. As its title infers, At Last finally shows her true colors. --Hal Horowitz
