Free Music Notes for At LastFree Music Review: Phenomenal work from Cyndi Hit: 5 Stars
What are you people 2 yrs. old??? "bad bad bad" Grow up! This is a phenomenal cd from the most passionate artist in pop. Just read the reviews in the Philly Enquirer Online, Washington Post OL, UK's Manchester OL, Rock Mountain News OL, etc., including Amazon's critic right here on this page... all critics giving this album stellar reviews. Cyndi never ceases to amaze me, and At Last is no exception. She tosses out all the rules on this one. That's where some of the people who "Claim" they've actually bought it fail to convince me. Cyndi will always be the unconventional artist who would stop singing before she would ever duplicate another artist. She decided before she ever sat down to re-record these songs, that that were going to be remade in her way, while keeping their integrity intact. How can you tell me that Unchained Melody and Hymn to Love doesn't make you cry? Those reviewers must be the coldest and most unemotional people ever. It's impossible. She has taken the Righteous Brothers classic, made it her own and made it even more of a tearjerker. Even the surviving member Bill Medley said that Cyndi's version "brought him to tears." And the grandson of the writer on Sunny Side of the Street and also nephew of Eddie Cantor, flew into N.Y. special just to see Cyndi at the Beacon Theatre this past month, to hear her sing it. He told her afterwards that his grandfather would of been proud for the justice she has given his song. I couldn't be prouder to say how much I love Cyndi and this CD, and I want to thank her from the bottom of my heart for changing my life with her music and making me a better person.
Free Music Review: Cyndi Does A Great Job! Hit: 5 Stars
Check out the new Women Who Rock Magazine w/Cyndi Lauper as their cover for January/February. http://www.womenwhorockmag.com/ She looks fabulous! They call At Last one of her finest and classiest album's yet, and I couldn't agree more. I'm not one to listen to standards on a whole - that's not really my era. Mine is more rock n' roll influenced, but I've always loved Cyndi's voice, and so I wanted to check it out. I'm glad I did. This is not what I was expecting at all. It's a great mix of rock/pop and standard classic songs from 60's groups like The Animals, Smokey Robinson, The Four Seasons, and singers like Etta James. Cyndi is in great voice here, giving her own original spin on these songs. One of my favorites has to be Stay. She turns it into a Great party-like anthem, with a Latin/Salsa sound. I've listened to this one over and over again, and I still haven't grown tired of it. She does what I think is the best take yet on Bill Medley and the late Bobby Hatfield's classic, Unchained Melody. Like Cyndi said she had to get the image of the potters wheel from the movie Ghost out of her head to do this one. And she succeeds. It's very melancholy and beautiful. Not once did I think about that scene in the movie listening to it. She definitely puts her stamp on this one. The only one that I couldn't get into was La Vie En Rose. She sings it beautifully, but it's not really my style of music. Maybe as I listen more, I'll get more comfortable w/it. All and all I was pleasantly surprised with this album, and give Cyndi all the credit for making it work so well musically. I think it's a must have, even if standards are not your thing....
Free Music Review: High On My List Of All time Favorites Hit: 5 Stars
Cyndi Lauper is the one of the main reason's why I grew to love all genres of music. Before she made a name for herself, I was never into it that much. Sure I listened to my 45's back in the 60's and 70's, like the Jackson's, David Cassidy, the Carpenter's and Carole King...but never had a 'real' musical hero I could look up to and be inspired by. Carole King and Joni Mitchell were definitely pioneers of folk and pop, but Cyndi was a singer that was unlike anyone ever in the music world. She changed everything for me, when she first hit it big, and started paving the way for so many other women rockers that followed. I wasn't sure about the new directon Cyndi was taking with At Last, but now after listening to this record almost repeatedly since buying it in December of 03, I couldn't be more inspired by her. Cyndi has covered some of the classic songs our parents grew up with. Her interpretation and the way in which she sings songs like Unchained Melody and the absolutely Gorgeous Piaf song, Hymn To Love, are so beautifully crafted(Cyndi reworked all the songs on here with Eric Clapton producer Russ Titleman). And along with the understated music, we get a singer that is completely at ease with any genre of music. That is very clear after listening to this record--a covers CD that is so much more original and gutsy than some artists records of All original songs. Cyndi stands high above all the rest, imo. This is one of my all-time favorite CD's now. I'm close to wearing it out, and will probably need a replacement sometime soon. Definitely worth it-- whether you're a long time fan or not.
Free Music Review: UN-BE-LIEVABLE!! Hit: 5 Stars
Are you ready to be blown away by singing in its purest form? This album will knock your socks off!!! The best part is, it's RAW. There's not a ton of instrumentation in most songs, and there is no post-production tweaking in her voice whatsoever. You can tell. The result is an intimacy as if she is singing live to you, personally. How many artists dare to do THAT? Only Cyndi can pull it off. Starting with the title track, she proves right from the beginning that she's not messing around. She commands your attention. You won't stop listening. While she has completely re-worked most of the songs into a more pure artistic form, it brings the sadness or joy out of each song like never before. Moving into "Walk on By" you are taken aback by the way she can make these songs her own, adding new flavor that so creatively refreshing. "Unchained Melody" is SO different, it's shocking. But after a few listens, I guarantee you it's more heartwrenching and beautiful than the original. Her interpretive voice just CRIES with pain and it's amazing. My fave on the album is the very upbeat and latin-flavored "Stay," in which she puts a new definition on the word "power." This song will definately be a radio hit if released as a single because it's addictive and so vocally incredible that your mouth just drops open!! BUY THE ALBUM, turn up the volume on your stereo and close your eyes...Cyndi is going to take you on a magnificent ride. She is truly one of the finest female vocalists of all time, and this album proves it.
Free Music Review: At Last Indeed! Hit: 5 Stars
While the music of this album can be said to not be of the traditional Cyndi Lauper pop-like sound, a fan of Cyndi will still love the album. It's great to be able to hear a musician perform or sing well in more than a single musical style! Cyndi's voice is strong, powerful, and emotive all throughout. Many of the songs sound as if you're kicking it back in some smokey night club drinking something with a bit of a bite while watching Cyndi perform in an intimate stage setting. With the album's title being At Last, I find myself saying those exact words! At last has Cyndi Lauper brought us another wonderful addition to the world of music. At last I have another wonderful CD to add to my collection. Cyndi's words from the CD's liner notes help explain this album well: "I grew up in Ozone Park Queens. 104th street, a melting pot, where Germans, Italians, Russians and around the block African Americans lived. A place where Mrs. Schnur sat with Mrs. Barbeauty, and my grandmother, to talk about their day. Where Mrs. Crispo, in her Mumu, sat by her front window keeping a close eye on everyone who walked up and down the block. And where each summer, music and families spilled out of row houses into back yards. For all the cultural differences, we all had two things in common: a love of music; and the belief that Manhattan, was Mecca. The Holy Grail, where all dreams led. "The songs on this cd I heard growing up. I dedicate them to all those people in all those row houses who inspired me by their lives and dreams."
