Free Music Notes for At LastFree Music Review: Even with the exclusion Of "Carey," This CD Has It All. Hit: 5 Stars
If only Cyndi would of included "Carey," her stellar remake of Joni Mitchell's classic, that she sang on the TNT special tribute to Joni, back in 2000. It was overlooked as part of this remakes CD for some reason. It should have been included. I don't think Cyndi realizes how many people out there thought that was the most dynamic performance she ever gave, earning her a standing ovation that night, and Joni Mitchell herself in awe of that performance. That would of been more than enough reason to buy this CD. However, Cyndi more than makes up for it, with a number of great remakes, notably the Etta James' title cut and Louis Armstrong's Sunny Side Of the Street. There's also a great little duet with her and Tony Bennett on Makin' Whoopee, that I got a real kick out of. She even does a cover of My Baby Just cares For Me, giving mention to George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. The last time I heard a remake of Maurice and The Zodiacs Stay, it was Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and then Jackson Browne. I have to hand it to her for putting a great Salsa spin on it. She does these amazing yelps during the song that only Cyndi could pull off with style. The only song that I don't listen to over and over is Burt Bacharach's Walk On By. Although sung beautifully, I prefer that Cyndi would of used her new 'rock version' of it instead- it's a little too much of a downer. But that's only one small flaw, in what is an extremely well sung and expertly interpreted catalogue of standards.
Free Music Review: An Amazing Surprise Hit: 5 Stars
I'm sorry to say that I wasn't that big on Cyndi Lauper in the 80's. I knew "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "True Colors," but I never bought an album--and when the majority of the population forgot about her, so did I.I saw an advertisement for this CD on TV, and (GOD, I'm embarrassed to admit this) I thought, "Does she have the voice for that stuff?" So I bought the CD to find out. I couldn't even make it past "At Last" for quite a while. I repeated it probably eight or 10 times before I went to the rest of the CD. She's absolutely incredible. My worries were totally unfounded. I'm humbled, I'm awed, I'm delighted--and I'm buying her back catalog! There's not a single song that I skip, but here are some highlights: At Last-As previously mentioned, her voice is incredible-powerful, subtle, what it needs to be, when it needs to be. If You Go Away-Ms. Lauper made this song exactly what it should be with her haunting vocals, whispering pianissimo, and soaring fortissimo. Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)- Few people can keep up with the high standards set by the Queen of Soul. Cyndi soared. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood-Talk about versatile! She sounds like a totally different woman-although equally (incredibly) talented. On the Sunny Side of the Street-By far the most enjoyable arrangement I've ever heard, instrumentally and vocally. Completely captures the intent of the song.
Free Music Review: This is what Real Talent is all about Hit: 5 Stars
Anyone who caught Cyndi's spine tingling performance at Onstage At The Kennedy Center in Washington last night, with Marvin Hamlisch conducting, can't dare call this embarrassing. I don't see anything wrong with giving constructive critism, but the last post was about has far removed from that as anyone could get, not to mention extremely mean-spirited. Does this person have some kind of vendetta against her? It sure seems that way. She is nothing short of phenomenal on this record. The vocal gymnastics she applys to each track is worth the price of this CD alone, and it just gets better everytime I listen. I recommend experiencing At Last with the lights off, to get the real affect of the music and the voice. She wisely chose to use sparse, but beautiful arrangements with legendary co-producer Russ Titleman, where it puts her voice out in front...As opposed to her vocals being secondary to the production, like on past records. Cyndi has been called "The Voice" by many, because of impressive vocal ability, and this record proves it. That's why Cyndi was chosen to headline New Years Eve in Times Square this year. She has endured for over 20 years as a first rate artist, while other acts have faded away that were relevant back in the 80's, when Cyndi first exploded onto the scene. And because she doesn't follow trends and continues to be her own person, she is thankfully, as relevant and amazing as ever.
Free Music Review: Cyndi gives this CD her own unique spin Hit: 5 Stars
This is one of the Better standards CD's of the current fare out there. Cyndi Lauper can probably outsing most any contemporary singer. And her voice serves this material well. She does an excellent high energy "Stay" and an even better "Sunny Side of the Street." She gets some help on this Louis Armstrong classic from The Hooter's Rob Hyman, also known for co-writing the # 1 classic "Time After Time" w/her. Incidentally, Cyndi Lauper will be performing SSOTS on Carson Daly's Last Call program this Friday, and will be the house band all night as well. I'm eager to hear her sing this live. I think she does a really mean version of the Animals "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, and in complete contrast, a sad but inspiring Walk On By, and a very bluesy spine tingling At Last (title song). Cyndi is so adept at being able to switch gears when she sings. One minute she has you wiping tears away, and the next minute she has you dancing insanely around the room. "My Baby Just Cares For Me" is the only cut that I don't have the urge to listen to again and again. Cyndi does a jazzy skat version. It's smartly produced, but it's just a little too light and jazzy for my taste. I do urge everyone if they can, to experience one of Cyndi's live shows. She's become a legend for blowing the roof off with her vocal power, as much as she is for walking fearlessly into an audience of thousands. She is something to see and to hear.
Free Music Review: At Last is an honest and heartfelt record Hit: 5 Stars
I've been in awe of Cyndi's voice for close to 20 years now. None of those feelings have diminshed with the release of her latest gem, At Last. It just reinforces for me that she remains one of the most endearingly honest and magnificent singers in the entire world. At Last is a classy and extremely well- arranged Jazz/Pop record--beautifully sung, and Cyndi wraps her gorgeous voice around ballads we all grew up with. My overall favorite is her rendition of Unchained Melody. Cyndi's sings this with such sensitivity, and uses her incredible 4 octave range to the fullest. I was immediately drawn to her great cover of Stay. The Latin/Salsa sound she uses, gives new life to it. Cyndi sounds amazing- full of energy and fun. And it's no wonder the readers in the Newsday music poll gave Cyndi such high marks on her cover of Etta James' At Last. Cyndi actually got more votes than Etta for this song. It is sung superbly, and she shows off her gorgeous range.. She reveals so much of her inner being throughout "At Last." And each song takes on a life of its own, through the poignant and heartfelt emotion she puts forth. She is pitch perfect throughout. I'm so sorry for the few that feel the need to tear her down, so intensely. Whatever the reaction, she does seem to be pushing people's buttons. I just find her so refreshingly unique in a world of so much limited talent.
