Free Music Review: Cyndi Lauper is having fun with the blues
Hit: 5 Stars

On June 22nd, 2010 Cyndi Lauper released in the USA her 11th studio album Memphis Blues, a cover blues album she co-produced with Scott Bomar and recorded in march 2010 at Electraphonic Studios in Memphis (Tennessee). An album Cyndi had been wanting for eight years and she could finally make, giving her very personal and refined touch to one of the most loved and complex musical genres of all times. Memphis Blues (Naïve-Downtown Records), featuring blues legends as B.B. King, Anne Peebles, Allen Toussaint, Charlie Musselwhite and Johnny Lang, was released in Italy on September 27th, 2010.
The feeling of Memphis Blues is gritty and full of life: "This is the album I've wanted to make for years" - says Cyndi - who has been choosing with extreme care the beautiful songs of big artists she has been admiring for a lifetime and who taught her how to sing, as Cyndi herself says. It was difficult to pick up only a dozen songs to work on for the album, due to the multiple suggestions from friends and colleagues and the several influences and inspirations she has been evaluating during her musical trip. A trip Cyndi has also been sharing with her fans via podcasts, twitter and blogging.
The songs choice for this record is pure genius. Cyndi was listening to Memphis Minnie, specifically to "You ain't done nothing to me", in her hotel room in Memphis all the while she made the album, also driven by Etta James' passion in her "I would rather go blind , which is "A song with so much feeling and which stopped my heart"- says Cyndi. Among the other personalities she chose Ma Rayney's and her "Prove that on me, because I thought it took so much courage to come out with that song in a time when women weren't always able to be independent and make their own way in the world, let alone be open about their sexuality. Besides, Ma Rayney's did not invent the blues but she popularized it. Among the others, Big Mama Thornton is another singer Cyndi sang with in her room for years and years: "An innovator who had a sense of rhythm that led a generation of women in rock"- Cyndi continues. After Big Mama Thornton, Cyndi was greatly influenced by Charlie Musselwhite and his "Fell on my knees", an early recording.

In Memphis Blues Cyndi is not on her distinctive lyrical soprano key. She is in a new dimension and in a very personal atmosphere, so deep into this music that while listening to the record we can easily imagine her singing it live in some blues bar in Memphis. And blues really fits her. With her voice she gives this music such an original and personal touch, transforming that - as she herself states - into an uplifting, soothing and encouraging musical expression.
The opening number `Just Your Fool' sets a promising tone with a wonderful interplay that is at times harmonious and at others a battle between Musselwhite's fantastic harmonica work and Cyndi Lauper's distinctive vocals. Other highlights include Toussaint's perfect blues piano on Lauper's cheerful version of `Early in the Morning', originally by Louis Jordan. Here it's just like being in a movie: Cyndi is telling a story and is creating somewhat again the atmosphere of her first videos, like the one for her beloved "Girls just wanna have fun".
"From the moment Allen Toussaint hit the keys in "Shattered dreams" I knew that we were creating something really special"- says Cyndi.
Listen to the involving "Romance in the dark" and what this song can communicate, even visually: "I closed my eyes and I saw Big Maybel in my head smiling and I started to really sing". Cyndi definitely learnt and uses Janis Joplin's teaching: "It's not the word you have to sing, it's the feeling".
Twisting, funny and truly uplifting is "Don't cry no more", originally from Bobby Blue Bland, one of the major of the modern soul sound.
In "Rollin' and Tumblin" country blues, a must listen of this album, Cyndi duets with a true Memphis Blues legend, Ann Peebles. Peebles' strong and throaty deep alto is serving as the perfect foil for Lauper's trill.
Very refined is "Down so low", where Cyndi manages several key changes in a multitude of tones and semitones. Other highlights include "How blue can you get" and "Crossroads" from Robert Johnson, when Lauper sticks with the traditional guitar based Memphis Blues' sound.
The last track of the CD European version "Wild women don't get the blues" is a great conclusion for a record answering the question: "Is Cyndi Lauper enjoying and fitting with the blues"? with a definite yes. A sophisticated rich album to listen to again and again, definitely uplifting!
