Free Music Notes for Stoned Raiders

Free Music Review: There are some weak spots, but overall this is an excellent and creative effort from the Hill
Hit: 4 Stars

Now, 'Stoned Raiders' isn't a perfect album, but it is another enjoyable effort from Cypress Hill. Continuing the similar sound found in their last LP before this, 'Skull & Bones', 'Stoned Raiders' is a step up from that in several ways. A more creative and, overall, a more enjoyable effort than their popular 2000 release, 'Stoned Raiders' is worth owning if you can keep an open mind about an older group exploring new genres and a new sound.

First off, I'll get the bad aspects of this album out of the way. 'Bitter' is an experimental rock track that just doesn't work, and 'Amplified', is a boring, generic rap-metal track that I pretty much skip every time. 'Memories' has some decent lyrics, but the track as a whole is not very enjoyable. 'Psychodelic Vision' is another throwaway track. Some of the samples on here, such as in the track 'Kronologik', are placed in there very poorly as well. Some of the lyrical content isn't up the group's standards as well (On one track B-Real says "That ****'s funny like Kid Rock with his shirt off". Erm, okay).

Now on to the good. The rest of the tracks range from good to excellent. The pure rap tracks ('Kronologik', 'Southland Killers', 'Red Meth and B', 'Lowrider', and 'Here Is Something You Can't Understand') are mostly excellent, and even two of the rap metal songs (the inspirational 'It Ain't Easy' and the must-blast 'Catastrophe')are worth a listen. The guests featured here (Redman, Method Man, Kurupt, and MC Ren) also do a commendable job on the tracks they're featured on.

The biggest surprise here is 'Here Is Something You Can't Understand'. It's an excellent grand finale for this album, and if you love both Cypress Hill and the Dogg Pound, you're in for a real treat.

Although many old fans can't get over the fact that they've changed their sound at this point, you have to realized that a group gets old if you put out the same record again and again. If you want the old sound, just listen to your old 'Cypress Hill' albums. If you can tolerate something new, then pick up 'Stoned Raiders'.

Stoned Raiders Poster

Thoroughly blunted multiracial West Coast pioneers Cypress Hill transformed hip-hop with their eponymous debut album. Now Stoned Raiders, their sixth, looks back on past achievements and clocks up a string of new ones. The metal-powered "Trouble" takes off where their "Rock Superstar" single left off and fixes a mood of embattled reflection aligned to tough determination. "Lowrider" uses an acoustic flamenco guitar to underline the droopy-lidded, easy-rolling side of the band and "Kronologik" tells the story of the group's career and struggles with the help of guest Kurupt. Additional special appearances by Redman, Method Man, and Kokane prove an excellent foil for B Real's patented cartoon style. Throughout they are kept on course by DJ Muggs, still one of the most distinctive studio overlords. His skills are particularly evident counterpointing the anguished lyrics of "Bitter" with multilayered siren voices and waves of dream rock guitar on the luminous percussion of "Memories" and the eerie but impassioned, weed-endorsing "L.I.F.E." They may be fighting their own personal star wars, but the stoned raiders are still winning the battle. --Gavin Martin
