Free Music Notes for Paper Monsters

Free Music Review: solo
Hit: 4 Stars

The Editorial Review from amazon.com pretty much sums it up.The strongest cut here is the lead single, "Dirty sticky floors". Actually it is a great song -and hopefully it will break this album for him. Another great track is "Hidden Houses". Many of this albums songs are slow and mellow -and remind me of two things: how much many of these songs remind me of DM's last album,"EXCITER" (which i wasn't too impressed with) and that I prefer to hear Dave Gahan sing more of the uptempo songs and leave the ballads to Martin Gore. I'm not saying I don't like it, I just prefer it. On "Black and Blue again", which is a slower cut, Dave shines- but on "A Little Piece" i'm just not feeling it. I'm sure everyone wants to know if this record sounds like DM. well there are similarities. For example "Bottle Living" reminds me of "personal Jesus",but toned down a bit. And "I need Love" reminds me of " I feel Love". I have to say i am very impressed with Dave Gahan's songwriting. Hopefully he will do more of it in the future because he's actually very good at it. and although i didn't like a couple of the songs on here, the most important thing i have to say about this cd is that Dave Gahan's voice has NEVER sounded better. He sounds comfortable and passionate singing HIS songs. Good for him.

Free Music Review: Some artists just have it all
Hit: 4 Stars

So this is what Dave Gahan sounds like when (finally) left to his own devices. Any other artist would have been nervous, or even scared, at the prospect of doing it their way after singing someone else's songs for over 20 years. But not Dave. While not a complete departure from Depeche Mode (some songs on the album, especially Hold On, could well have been heard on Exciter), Paper Monsters truly feels like Dave was ready to do his own thing and share his own views on life. Of course, like with any other solo debut from a member of a hugely sucessful band, Paper Monsters does somewhat leave you thinking that there's room for improvement. But make no mistake : this is the work of a true professional here, an artist who you feel has been there and done that and who knows what he's doing. With highly autobiographical and well-crafted lyrics, exquisite vocals (Dave's smooth barytone has never sounded better in my opinion) and some masterful arrangements, Dave's Paper Monsters may leave you wanting more...but it doesn't disappoint.

Free Music Review: Better Than Recent DM
Hit: 4 Stars

22 years after Fashion in a Hurry hit it big with perpetual adolescents and the adults who love them, Dave Gahan releases his first proper solo CD, Paper Monsters. Not much news here to report: Gahan continues to become a better singer (his bleating days, and - hopefully - his heroin addiction, are behind him). He's written his first batch of tunes (or, at least, released them), and they're uniformly good (the ballads, especially). A lot of the tracks are about, of course, addiction and its aftermath, which limits their interest to the pop market, sure, but, smart rock star that he is, he leaves the meanings vague enough for the nonce - "Dirty Sticky Floors" could just as much be about the aftermath of sex as of o.d.'ing. Paper Monsters is a better album than the last three Depeche Mode releases combined, not to mention Martin Gore's solo monstrosities. In fact, Gahan could let Gore go on his merry way, but then who would wear the dresses?

Free Music Review: Not quite Depeche Mode but not far off.
Hit: 4 Stars

You'd think that Dave Gahan would choose to do something radically different in his side project, given his independence-streak but that's not the case here. I suppose that it's probably better for it, given how wonderful DM's music is. Most of the songs wouldn't be out of place on the recent DM albums. Dave is actually quite a good composer and it's surprising to me that he didn't have more input in writing on earlier DM albums. Perhaps he needed time and experience in order to pull it off? I'm not sure I'd say this is the best thing Dave's been involved with, but it sits proudly on my shelf with the other DM albums and is quite enjoyable.

Free Music Review: An excellent solo debut!!
Hit: 4 Stars

A lot of people is criticizing Dave for doing an album that sounds like the latest works of DM... I don't see where is the problem with that. I think that he writes really good and that he didn't intend to discover a new philosofical theory, he just wanted to make some music of his own!!! And I think that he did it really great, the sounds are impecable and the lyrics are good. The cd goes through several moods and it was really nice and easy to hear for me. If you have been following DM for several years I think that this album is a must have for you.
