Free Music Notes for Paper MonstersFree Music Review: This CD is on par with the last DM CD Hit: 3 Stars
When I purchased this CD, I had high expectations, mainly b/c I was rather disappointed DM's last offering, Exciter. It didn't take long to realize this CD is very much like Exciter and that the hard-driving techno/mod sound that made DM such a cult group does not really exist anymore. Dave's vocals are great. Tunes such as "Bottle Living" and "I need you are" very good, but the writing could be a little more sophisticated. Satisfaction may never be found with any band members solo projects or even future DM releases because the sound fans are really longing for is history.
Free Music Review: A great first effort Hit: 3 Stars
This is a great first effort from DM's frontman. Songs like Bottle Living and Dirty Sticky Floors show that Dave's not the only one who can rock out when he needs to (also shows the influence he had on DM's sound). While some of the songs feel a little like filler (Goodbye), it's a solid effort.
Free Music Review: beats low expectations Hit: 3 Stars
expectations were fairly low for this-- but it's better than expected.it's surprisingly "adult" --pleasant and non-threatening. If you liked the last couple Depeche Mode albums, you'll like this. If you think they're headed downhill, this won't change your mind.
Free Music Review: a Monster listening album.. Hit: 2 Stars
I am as dissapointed in Dave's project as I am with Martin's... First of all, if you are expecting a synthy album, think again. This is in fact a dark Rock album with a twist of Blues. The lyrics are horrible and seem so forced, and full of Cliche. Now I can see why Martin Gore writes all the songs for Depeche Mode.... Half of the songs are very mellow and boring (you kinda can't wait to hit the FORWARD button to go to the next song), while others are more mid tempo and Rockish. The only thing that allowed me to hear the entire album to the end was the fact that it was Dave Gahan behind the vocals. Also, speaking of vocals.....it seems like he is starting to loose that unique deep compelling, energetic, and mesmerizing voice that made all of us an instant DM fan. In conclusion, this album is terrible, but if you are a die hard DM and Dave Gahan fan like myself, then you would probably get a copy of it anyways. The sad part is that you will listen to it a few times and then put it far away cause its not something that would stay in your CD player. The only decent song is "Dirty Sticky Floor". This album may appeal more to the none DM fans. BE AWARE..... PS...After listening to both Dave and Martin's albums, I have to agree that its time for DM to call it quits before putting out an album far worse than EXCITER.
Free Music Review: This alblum explains that whole 'Zombie Room' thing.... Hit: 2 Stars
As a long time, hard-core Depeche Mode fan, I am never one to critique the band or any of their memebers unduly.... but after listening to Gahan's solo alblum, so much of my recent unrest with the band made sense. Of course, Depeche Mode has never been known for overly obscure or complex lyrics, but it seems their last alblum had moments where it was just taken too far. I guess back then I just laughingly chalked it up to Gahan taking his turn at prose.... but only now do I realize how right I was. In listening to the alblum, it does have its occasional saving points... a few nice sounding slower songs, and of course, Gahan's voice is beautiful, but the lyrics are horrendous, and some of the songs sound laughable even without them. I've given the alblum several tries, and even seen Gahan's solo tour, but despite it all, I can't help thinking Gahan lost all hope of musical quality in some 'Zombie Room' with 'Dirty Sticky Floors' where he thought he'd 'Stay Awhile'.....
