Free Music Review: If You Want Bedroom Soul, Add 2 More Stars
Hit: 3 Stars

Nobody would ever accuse D'Angelo of going anywhere in a hurry. Believe me, Brown Sugar owes nothing to the Rolling Stones except the shared title, and while the Stones' song invoked images of sexual enslavement, D'Angelo's version is purely consensual. The title is song is slow and blistering, and it establishes the pace for the entire album. Each song moves at the speed of slow sex, which makes it fairly impressive accompaniment for same. Out of the bedroom, though, this collection can get pretty tedious.

Brown Sugar is less a collection of songs than an assemblage of sexy, slow jams with hypnotic, heavy grooves. Each track sits in its own pocket and stays there; chord changes and melody are minimal. In their place is a seductive vibe that holds steady while D'Angelo styles in a free-form falsetto that is more than a little reminiscent of Marvin Gaye. The production is slick and full of space without distracting from the libido-driven topicality of each song. "Jonz in My Bonz," "Smooth" and "Higher" all convey the full content of their message in the title. Dropped in the middle of this collection is a good cover version of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'," which although good, doesn't offer much to justify the remake. All things being equal, I'd just as soon hear Smokey sing it, but thanks anyway. Brown Sugar works like an aphrodisiac if you're with somebody and the lights are already down low, but if you're alone, it works more like Sominex. B Tom Ryan

Free Music Review: I (almost) never give five stars ...
Hit: 4 Stars

But D'Angelo probably comes closest this side of Michael Jackson's masterpieces back in tha day (not to say that the two are even in the same category artistically).

Soul, soul, soul ... that's a HUGE factor that separates the D'Angelos, Raheem DeVaughns and Calvin Richardsons from wannabe R&B icons like Usher, Tyrese, Omarion, Chris Brown, Mario ... (did I miss any of today's quote-unquote "top R&B talent?")

This LP Brown Sugar should be required listening for any up & coming male vocalist that even aspires to one day be big-time.

"Brown Sugar" and "Lady" are my jams. This is one of those LPs kind of like Mary J. Blige's "My Life" and Erykah Badu's "Mama's Gun."

Deep soul-flavored music with a deep-rooted tale/life experience(s) behind it/them.

The Great's always leave you wanting more & I personally put D'Angelo in that category.

Dude, can you please bless us with another classic? (LOL). Cope this LP! It should be among the first purchases when it comes to contemporary hip hop-flavored R&B.

Free Music Review: I saw it
Hit: 5 Stars

I came across this album back in July 1995. I bought it from Tower Records in Berkley Ca. When I bought it, Neo-Soul was pretty much unherd of. I can remember hearing the first 5 songs and telling a man that worked in the store to give me a copy. They were playing it on the stores system because they were previewing it, it was the release day. It was so different at the time most people didnt know what to make of it. Most people couldnt get past the track S#!t, DaNm, MF. My wife, who was my girlfriend at the time told me it was garbage and didnt know why I was listening to it. Her opinion didnt mean much to me because her favorite artist was Kieth Sweat and Soul4 real. Needless to say, she dosnt have much music credability. But as as soon as I bought it, I knew that I had a CD that was going to change R&B and change it real soon. But I thought it would take longer than it did because the album wasnt recieved well until "Your My Lady" got a Buzz and a video. Thats when people started taking notice. I think that it is considered a good album by most and is a masterpiece to people who know music and those who think they know music. But this is hands down one of the top ten best all around albums EVER recorded.

This album is truly a classic, and one of the most verstaile albums you'll find.

It can listened to while riding in ur car, chillin with ur girl, rollin the blunt, or just plain soul searching..

This music uplifts you and hits your soul like music today just cannot do.
