Free Music Notes for Brown SugarFree Music Review: A HIGH 5, GOOD ALBUM (5 stars) Hit: 5 StarsThis Disc has it all. Jazz, R&B, Neo-Soul, Gospel, Blues, etc. It's an owe to greats and whose the best: Marvin Gaye, Prince, Donny Hathaway, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughn, Quincy Jones, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, so and and on.
Just to say, I'm proud I have this luckily I do. D'Angelo is real strong, so versatile, kinda like a Mount Rushmore or a post-modern Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Sam Cooke, R. Kelly, to name a few. He has it all. He can play, he can sing, he can write, he can arrange, he can produce, he can compose, he could do everything.
I'm happy alot of reviews had to rate it a CLASSIC RATING and mostly an A+ Must-Have. Bought to get into VOODOO in a lil bit.
Love every song on this disc. Don't forget about the remake of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin" (which was 1 of my favorite off the album have a real tight groove and lovely strings and cool vocals) Plus I love Brown Sugar (that's everybody's song, mine too), Lady, the big-band jazz influenced "When We Get By", the controversial song "S***, Damn, Motherf*****", the Gospel-coming anointed "Higher" (the last track off the CD), "Me and Those Dreamin' Eyes of Mine" (ev'rytime I hear that song and plus the video, it reminds me of listening to some Ronny Jordan plus some 70s soul and some smooth jazz, 'cuz it has that vibe, that smooth feeling, that sexy more mature voice with a great falsetto on the add), to me if I was the black version of David Ritz, Leonard Feather, Gary Giddins, Gene Lees, or the Modern Quincy Jones, R. Kelly, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Grover Washington, I'm the one that can make songs outta that. Ya'll know I actually play the trumpet, write music, make songs (whether singing or rapping), plus create a Wide collection of Diverse Albums of Jazz, Rock, Classical, Rhythm-and-Blues, Gospel, Easy-Listening, Pop, Rap, Hip-Hop, Christian Rap, etc. I love all music, I hear all music, I appreciate all music, I know all music. I got Music all'a my Blood, my Heart, My Spirit, My Daily Snacktime, My Daily Homework, etc. You know what I mean.
Again this was released in 1994-1995. This became the birth of the music they call "neo-soul" or "nu-soul" they call it. That brought in a new generation, a very variety of artists who create a melange of different sorts of music [Jazz, Hip-Hop, Contemporary Jazz, R&B, 60s & 70s Soul, Gospel, Blues, Latin, etc.]. Erykah Badu, Maxwell, Musiq (Soulchild), Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, India.Arie, Glenn Lewis, Groove Theory, Ronny Jordan, Digable Planets, Kindred, Anthony Hamilton, Bilal, etc. (that's in the Neo-Soul Genre) plus in the Gospel Neo-Soul Genre they are Debra Killings, Lisa McClendon, Joye B. Moore, Tonex, Kirk Whalum, Lisa Perry, Montrell Darrett, Deitrick Haddon, etc.
Free Music Review: This is One Album that I refuse to let go! Hit: 5 StarsD'Angelo's "Brown Sugar" is definitely in a class of its own. Even years after its release, the CD still captivates listening audiences everywhere such as me. I have yet to find another artist with the talent that he exhibits in his lyrics and his music. Moreover, this CD had paved the way for new artists who also show an appreciation for jazz in their music.
His sultry voice just glides over every cut while nursing his smoky organ, D'Angelo emerges as one of the very few relying on the old school to create the new school, staying away from drum machines & keyboard effects. His influences are obvious; but what makes this record so refreshing is that he uses his influences to help create his own vision instead of just emulating his heroes.
"Cruisin", with its never-ending chorus and subtle violins, is something you'd expect to hear on one of Stevie Wonder's 'super' albums. "Jonz in My Bonz" sounds like a wonderful omission from Prince's "Sign 'O' The Times". Every other song sounds as if D'Angelo is channeling Curtis Mayfield & Marvin Gaye all at once. . Nevertheless, the world will only see ONE D'Angelo..... ALL the tracks are smooth and the words talk about love in a deeper form.
Free Music Review: Sugar Never Tasted So Good Hit: 4 StarsVirginia born Michael D'Angelo Archer re-mapped the stagnant '90s R&B/soul scene with this stunning 1995 debut. A whole host of others followed in wake of this and Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite to create the `nu-soul' movement. Key tracks are the title song's smokey piano bar ode to Mary Jane, the swinging When We Get By, and the violent, blues-style narrative Sh*t, Damn, Motherf*cker; a response to a lover's infidelity. Not quite as well executed as 2000's follow-up Voodoo, but a landmark in any case. When the third album from one of America's least prolific - but most talented and visionary - artists will emerge is anyone's guess. However, these two slabs of classic soul have established an enviable legacy already.
Free Music Review: One of the Best Debut Albums! Hit: 5 StarsUsually when an "artist" puts out a debut album, only 2 to 3 songs (at the most) are worth listening to. This, however, does not apply to D'Angelo; he nailed it with this one. Each song is a gem and will keep you moving. This album is truly a classic.
Free Music Review: A great introduction. Hit: 5 Stars There is something delectable different about this album, it has a lot of the usual style and slickness of r+b but somehow transcends the mainstream with its special feel.
The difference being more than the usual nod at past influences, there is a lovely reincarnated feel of the 60's about it and though it has echoes of early Stevie Wonder, it stands out also as sassy and sexy 90's album from a unique and experimental artist.
