Free Music Notes for Voodoo

Free Music Review: Wow!
Hit: 5 Stars

You know, I was going to write a little synopsis of each song and then I realized I love them all! Each one is impossibly smooth, soulful, passionate and sexy..Whether you're looking for upbeat or slow you've got both on this CD. I've not yet gotten the chance to see him live but if I ever did, I would be willing to pay almost any price. I LOVE his voice. You should really buy this CD.

Free Music Review: How does it feel?
Hit: 5 Stars

Can it be? A modern soul classic in the year 2000? Unlike albums that came out around in by, say, Alicia Keys or Angie Stone, though, Voodoo succeeds on the singular ambition to go back a couple of decades and then go back a couple more - he's Marvin Gaye for the singer/songwriter era. And even as nearly every song tops the five or six minute mark and the record lasts nearly 80, there isn't a dull moment - it's solid soul and r/b, with full band production and ballads sung so beautifully they become bare statements of humanity (he wasn't naked in the "Untitled" video for nothing). When I bought it, I thought the sore point was the Redman/ Method Man "Left and Right" which awkwardly brought modern hiphop into the mix. Listening to it now, though, it just seems that the song was a perfect showcase for D'Angelo's range as a musician - he pulls off the macho swagger there as well as he does his more, uh, unbridled moments.

Free Music Review: breathtaking
Hit: 5 Stars

all the songs on this album are magnificent - vocally, and lyrically. His neon-soul voice brings out an angel. The best songs are "Playa Playa" "Untitled" "Africa" and "Send It On". Truly amazing.

Free Music Review: Very Solid
Hit: 4 Stars

Now that Outkast has the stage, it may be worthwhile to examine this record once again, four years later. I'm listening to it right now, and must confess that this is an excellent R&B/Soul album, with excellent compositions, gorgeous singing, and infectious hooks. It also explores a broad tapestry of R&B styles, which keeps things mixed up and flowing.

D'Angelo takes time in between albums, but there's obviously a reason. This is a high quality SOUL ( I never did get what "neo-soul" was ever about) album, one that would please D'Angelo's influences as much as his audience.

Free Music Review: the groove has appeared
Hit: 5 Stars

D'angelo's second lp is very different than the first one; the sound is more developed, flowing, and organic. He sets up grooves and lets them sit there, not rushing to fulfill the day's rigid verse chorus verse choruse bridge chorus requirements. The songs are memorable and very soulful, the parts fit together perfectly, and the topless star's lyrics are always halfway unintelligible even though he puts them in the liner notes. The roberta flack cover works well because of the added backbeat, but it works for the same reason this whole album works: D'Angelo takes his time with everything and lets the music flow. The album doesn't really have any weak points except for left & right, which does not fit in the scheme of things can be removed without any harm to the album. D'Angelo has really matured as an artist and anyone who needs exposure to some taseful paced downtempo neo soul should buy this now
