Free Music Review: Album of 2000...?
Hit: 5 Stars

Back in 1995 with D'angelos `Brown Sugar' and Maxwells `Urban Hang Suite' it seemed like young kids were actually going to bring back real R&B. By 2000 nothing really did change, Maxwells two follow ups bombed and D'angelos long awaited follow up `Voodoo' got mixed reviews. Well the critics were right about one hit wonder Maxwell, but they were dead wrong about D'angelo.

`Voodoo' has to be the greatest true R&B album of the modern era. People I guess wanted `Brown Sugar Pt. II' but instead D'angelo changed up his game, grew as an artist and dared to adventure with his music. This album captures the vibe of one of them ole 70s jammin' sessions. The album is downright fonky, and is a salute to old timers like Sly Stone, Marvin Gaye, etc. And like those guys, with `Voodoo' there is a heavy mist of weed smoke to compliment the grooves. Its cool to hear a young kid like D'angelo using actual instruments to create his music rather than the computers and synthesisers they use these days, and the finished sound is undeniable. I love the Robert Flack cover `Feel Like Makin' Love', `One Mo Gin' rides the craziest bass line, and yes the hit `Untitled' is cool also, but from front to back this album is hitting. The songs are all real well crafted and carry a dark atmosphere and you almost feel like your laid back in some smoky, low key NYC jazz caf? vibin' to D'angelo and his band.

If you like the real music of yesteryear and wish you could hear a truly talented artist of today pushing the boundaries then you need to cop `Voodoo'.

Free Music Review: The Definition of Neo Soul
Hit: 5 Stars

This is what neo soul is all about. D'Angelo's liner notes shout out to Marvin, Sly, Stevie, Curtis... he's picking up where all of these greats left off. Nobody lays it down like D'Angelo, especially on this album. Voodoo isn't just an album, it's an experience. The sexiest album I've heard since Velvet Rope, and it's not necessarily just because you'd find it in the 'strictly for lovers' section at the record store. This album is bold, experimental, and most importantly loyal to the mothers and fathers of soul music. D's voice booms, he picked up all the right players (Questlove, Charlie Hunder, Raphael Saadiq) and his own musical talent is a must-hear. He's different from the other neo soul acts out there, yet you're not going to have much trouble opening your mind up to it.
Stand out tracks include latin jazz-flavored Spanish Joint, the soulful Stick To My Guns, the heart-wrenching One Mo'gin and, of course, the Untitled track that solidified him not only as the soul force of the millenium, but also [for the liking of] ladies!

Sorry that was lame. Seriously though, buy this album because it's sexy, original, and it's a solid listen from start to finish.

Free Music Review: True Neo-Soul Has Returned
Hit: 5 Stars

The time of the release of "Voodoo", it had been five years since his debut album "Brown Sugar". Suddenly, he released his sexy music video "Untitled (How Does It Feel)". This caught many audiences' attention. This is only part of his tremendous quality. The album's musical quality proves that the five years was worth the wait. Behind the sexy image is a genius R&B musician.

This is one of the best R&B album releases in years. In 2000, D'Angelo deservingly won two Grammys: Best R&B Album and Best Male R&B Performance. It returns the grooves and the soul that hadn't been heard in years. His unique catchy grooves captivates audiences the whole listen. Though the 13-track album runs 79 minutes, he uses every second wisely. There is never a single dull moment. This accomplished difficult task offers the ultimate unforgettable R&B journey. These toe-tapping beats combined with neo-soul grooves brings D'Angelo up to Marvin Gaye's level. The album's realism deserves him great respect as a true artist.

He wrote and performed every song beautifully. His own inner soul is wonderfully expressed through every track. Whether he sings a ballad or an upbeat song, his voice blends perfectly with the music. Those that feel that the lyrics are hard to understand must know that he intended the grooves to be more pronounced. Few artists have accomplished this as well as he did. He also performed his own instruments wonderfully, which brings listeners closer to his words and his themes.

"Voodoo" is a great album for the ultimate R&B or neo-soul fan. This is destined to be a classic while continuing to captivate many listeners.

[Note]: For those looking to understand the lyrics better, turn up the stereo three or four notches more than usual. It'll help a lot.

Free Music Review: Soul Food for the Ears
Hit: 5 Stars

Back in the day, as my daddy used to say, "black folks put they foot into their music." It's taken me FOUR years to review this CD, because I didn't hear all of it for a good 12 months after I first got it.

Of course, I'd heard and seen "Untitled", but my JOINT from this album is "Send It On". I listened to that ONE SONG for months, on repeat, as I wrote scene upon scene, read, checked papers, studied, sipped a little wine, bathed... Talk about a song being worth 1000 words. And four years later, I can STILL hear that song looped a couple of dozen times in a row. Talk about voodoo. No soul artist has made a song this close to perfect since the 70's... and as a musician, I would have LOVED to have been at that studio session.

The rest of the album is just as good. It was the soundtrack for several great dinner parties, and lots of good times. I'd light candles and cook, and we'd have a great time... I will continue to play it, and *Brown Sugar" for many years into the future.

D, get back into the studio, man. Show 'em how it's done.

Free Music Review: My favorite R&B album of all time.
Hit: 5 Stars

I could never be an artist, I simply don't have the temper for it. As an example, I spent the last 10 minutes sitting here at 1 in the morning, the steady melodic thumping of this very album coursing through the background with my head in my hand, nodding back and forth in disbelief, and frustration with some of the negative reviews of this album.

I wanted to lash out, to say bad things about those that disparaged this masterpiece. But I'll abstain. I guess I had to come to the conclusion that music is a very personal thing; certain rhythms, styles, and lyrical content have natural appeal to some, not others. Speaking nothing of the memories associated with certain albums. Ahhhh, when I think about the summer of 2000, D'angelo brought his soulful delicious voice to most every passion drenched night. Sorry, I could ramble on forever about Voodoo's personal meaning to me. But for everyone else...trust that this album is objectively beautiful. There is a seductive cadence in his rhythm, and delicious instramental accompaniments that is unique to him.

There isn't a song I don't really love on this album, although I think he's at his best when moving at a slower pace, it amplifies the sultry, nonchalant, almost "half here, half gone" style he's such a deliberate master of.

I hope this in some way prompts you to consider buying this album, it's just priceless!!!
