This review of the CD on this page is for a single CD remix, and not the 3-CD boxed set. Both the single CD remix and the box set were released in 1990, to note the original 1970 album's twentieth anniversary.
Titled, "The Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary Edition," this CD is a remix of the original LP, and contains the same tracks. They were remixed in stereo from the 16-track analog tapes and digitally remastered. This 1990 CD remix was issued by Polydor as a single CD as well as a 3-CD box set.
The first disc in the 3-CD set is the same as his single CD. Disc 2 contains several tracks of jam sessions, including the historic jam from the night that Clapton and Allman met. Disc 3 contains out-takes of some of their songs as well as previously unreleased tracks, including "Mean Old World," "It Hurts Me Too," and "Tender Love."
I hope this helps to clear up some misinformation that has previously been posted on this page.
As for a review of this CD album, the music holds the same hypnotic energy for me today as it did when it was released twenty years ago. Every cut on this CD is sensational. The album has continued to be on my list of Top 10 albums to bring to the dessert, island, or whatever. Every group member performed in top form when these recording sessions were made. By the way, when "Layla" was released as a single, it became a "hit" on American radio, and was the first recording of its length to do so.
Sadly, we lost Duane not too long after these sessions took place. We will always have this recording to remember the brilliant musicians who came together for a brief moment in time.
