Free Music Review: Tiesto- Elements of Life

One of the best dj's in the world serves up an astonishing mix of his signature trance sound, blended with some progressive and a hint of electronica to dance to. The new artsit album from Tiesto, "Elements of Life", follows his 2004 effort "Just Be" and landmarks his influences from worldwide touring and movement in dance music to serve up an amazing blend of sounds. It opens with the trance anthem "Ten Seconds Before Sunrise," which is appropriate to set the mood for the album, almost reminding us of the past few mixes that we've heard from the acclaimed "ISOS" series. Jes lends her beautiful vocals on "Everything", and Tiesto throws some excellent stutter edits and superb programming elements in the track to create a crazy sound. Jes has worked on some of the most amazing vocal trance works, such as with Gabriel and Dresden and Deepsky, and now Tiesto. This track will definately be used in sets (and most likely remixed) by several of the best dj's later this year. Should be interesting. "Do You Feel Me", featuring Julie Thompson, sounds unique at first, but when the vocals come in, the rhythm accompanied with Tiesto's hypnotizing syths compliment the vocals extremely well. The buildup in the instrumental track "Carpe Noctum" is very well done, just before the breakdown comes in and sends you in a state of blissful trance. "Driving to Heaven" is a mediocre track, but only because it is surrounded by so many other tracks that stand out more for what the album represents. Though, the track does have a few good moments. The next three tracks are the ones that I have been dying to hear because they combine the production of BT alongside Tiesto. Tiesto and BT's production in "Sweet Things" are an amazing use of Tiesto's trance with BT's gifted knowledge in arrangement and knowing the language of music. Charoltte Martin's high-note vocals add a special meaning and message to the track, creating an almost soothing and mesmorizing state. "Brighter Mornigstar" also combines the production skills of Tiesto and BT, to create one of the best instrumental tracks on the album. BT's electro-infused rhythm and uplifting soundscapes with Tiesto's trance is the perfect combination to take you on a journey. This track is so addicting and so beautiful. "Break My Fall" is the "Love Comes Again" of this release. BT lends not only his producing skills, but vocals as well. The track sure is catchy, and is a guarenteed club hit. Though, I don't think that it quite stacks up to the track of "Love Comes Again", but maybe in time. The next track of "In the Dark" is a different Tiesto sound: almost electronic rock and trance. I know that it sounds crazy, but Tiesto pulls if off extremely well. Excellent programming and vocals by Christian Burns to create a sound unlike most stuff you would expect from Tiesto. The track "Dance4Life" with Maxi Jazz was put on the album. Released in 2006, it was probably a bonus track added to fill up space on the mix. Not too bad of a track, but not up to par with the album. The album titled "Elements of Life" puts the listener through a good journey by using several, well, elements of Tiesto's production styles in this track. Not the best on the album, but sure is good. Like "Dance4Life", the "He's a Pirate (Tiesto Mix)" made the album. This was released last summer as a remix to the "Pirates of the Carribean" soundtrack, but when compared to the others on the rest of the album, it falls short. All in all, this is the album Tiesto and trance listners have been waiting for. The album has so many high points and creative productions to keep you listening. "Elements of Life" will remain in people's CD players and MP3 players for a long time. One of the best pieces by Tiesto to date. Absolutely amazing.

Supporting this release with performances at Coachella, WMC and an extensive national tour through Summer 07, Elements of Life will be THE electronic album of 2007.Tiësto sticks to his guns on a new album of original compositions that follows 2004's Just Be. Elements of Life strikes a satisfying balance between inventive vocal tracks and signature trance stormers: "Ten Seconds Before Sunrise," "Driving to Heaven," and "Bright Morning Star" all glow with the Dutchman's epic sound, one that is simultaneously haunting and uplifting. On the vocal side, the soaring energy of "Break My Fall," which features BT on vocals, will not disappoint fans of the duo's prior work on "Just Be" and other collaborations. To be sure, there are a number of less convincing pieces as well: "Dance4Life" with Faithless's Maxi Jazz falls flat, and the lyrics of "Can You Feel Me" prove that the genre's reputation for banal wordsmithing is not entirely undeserved. For the most part, however, these weaker moments are outweighed by the stronger tracks. Principal among these is undoubtedly "Sweet Things"--in which Charlotte Martin's vocal high-wire act is complemented by some exceptional programming--a track that is sure to receive a great many spins by DJs around the globe and yet further proof that when it comes to bringing alive the female voice for the dancefloor, Tiësto remains without equal. All in all, it's a safe bet that many of Tiësto's Elements will be making their way into DJ crates and MP3 players alike. --Brent Kallmer
