Free Music Notes for Alive 2007Free Music Review: Let's Dance Hit: 5 Stars
This is a fast paced CD and all of the songs are high paced and make you want to move. My favorite song on the CD is Around the World/Harder Better Faster Stronger and I believe it is probably the most well known song of the CD. This song builds you up right from the start with its beat and melody. It is very catchy. The words "around the world" are repeated over and over again, but it is not annoying and you find yourself singing along most of the time. Then the second robot voice comes in with the other words of the song. The changing beats make the song increase in speed and it goes along with the words of harder, faster, stronger.
A lot of the songs on the CD are accompanied by words that seem to be generated by the computer. Throughout all of Robot Rock/Oh Yea it is hard to tell whether there is something being said or if it is just noise and it adds to the intensity of the song. In this song they are also able to take computer generate noise and adapt it to sound almost like an electric guitar. This is a great effect and adds a rock element to this electronic beat. The song seems to grow and grow as it proceeds and more elements are added into it.
In Touch It/Technology this robot voice is used yet again, but this time is sounds like a female voice. The songs seem to flow together and this song sounds similar to Robot Rock/Oh Yea in the sense of the electric guitar sound. And you can even hear "oh yea" throughout this song which is obviously heard in Robot Rock/Oh Yeah. This song is more repetitive in nature but catchy as well. It is very hard to listen to one of these Daft Punk songs and not tap your foot to the beat.
Throughout the entire CD there seems to be a lot of intermingling of sounds within the different songs, which gives the CD a feel as if it is almost one long song. Like mentioned in the last paragraph "Oh yea" can be heard in multiple songs. This is also the case in Television Rules the Nation/Crescendolls and Around the World/Harder Better Faster Stronger. "Around the World" is heard in Television and then it is one of the main focuses on Around the World. It is almost as if it is foreshadowing what is to come.
Burnin'/Too Long is another fast paced and energetic song and Face to Face/Short Circuit slows it down a little bit at this point of the CD but not enough to keep you from wanting to dance. I think this is a good idea as they transition into One More Time/Aerodynamic, which I believe to be the best dance song of the CD.
Aerodynamic Beats/Gabrielle, Forget about the World, Prime Time of Your Life/Brianwasher/Rollin' and Scratchin'/Alive, Da Funk/Dadftendirekt, Superheros/Human After All/Rock'n Roll, and Human/Together/One More Time/Music Sounds Better with You/Stardust (Instrumental) round out the end of the CD and fall behind the powerful start to the CD, but are all quality songs.
I would probably rate this CD one of my favorites of this genre. The dance feel and the upbeat tempos make all of the songs exciting and party starting.
Free Music Review: Awesome Live Recording! Hit: 5 Stars
I enjoy electronica music and I reviewed the Deadmau5 "For Lack of a Better Name" CD. Awesome album, by the way. Incredible! In any case, a rather pleasant series of comments followed including a few recommendations for selections which I might like. One of the Amazon reviewers, P Harper, said: "Gary! Gotta go with Daft Punk!!" Well, that's a good suggestion. Daft Punk appeared on my Amazon recommendations list several times and I appreciate the confirmation and the little boost.
In looking over the Daft Punk selections available, I decided to go with a set of Daft Punk Alive albums for several reasons. One, they were a good deal. Two, I've never been to a live electronica concert and my prospects of going are very slim. I'm 74 and would probably feel very uneasy at such a concert. I used to go to New Wave concerts (Devo, Blondie, Oingo Boingo, The Beat, etc) when I was in my forties and I really stood out then. Can you imagine a 74-year-old guy at a Daft Punk concert? Sorry, I just can't take that much attention. Well, in any case, I really love the music, it's great to listen to at home and the Alive discs give me a good feeling for what an electronica concert might be like.
The Daft Punk Alive 2007 CD is is overwhelming! It's one of the best live recordings I've ever heard irrespective of the genre of the music! Without question! It's just awesome! In a lot of ways it reminds me of a "Greatest Hits" album where your favorite band or performer presents all those songs which you have learned to love. The difference is that I've never heard Daft Punk before I bought this recording. I suppose it's a Daft Punk greatest hits assortment done up in bright new fashion especially for this dramatic occasion. The individual selections are masterfully chosen and seamed together into an almost continuous stream of melodic and dramatic music. It's real beat heavy and wonderfully melodic with a masterful blend of voices here and there. The sound is simply outstanding. Man, what more could you ask for?
The sound quality on this album is particularly good. I listen to it on a 100 watt per channel receiver with 7 speakers including two 12" woofers and an 80 watt powered subwoofer. It's minimal as far as high-end stereos go but it's quite sufficient for my aging ears. I usually play it at about half volume (quite loud) as I like to feel the music as well as hear it. The recording is just awesome. I'd guess it was recorded in some type of cavernous venue and it has a big, full, vibrant quality and I love the audience and the way it responds to the music. If you like good live recordings, this one is hard to beat.

Free Music Review: Best DVD Ever Hit: 5 Stars
The Daft Punk tour in 2007 was a phenomenal show put on involving mash ups of their biggest hits and a fantastically elaborate light show. Daft Punk seamlessly intertwines several songs at one, applying various techniques to create an entirely new song. Due to the robotic nature of the music, songs match up perfectly and even play off each other for those listeners who are very familiar with it. Unlike most live performances, Daft Punk did not try to introduce new music to the audience. Instead, they stuck with their most popular hits. It was evident how much the crowded enjoyed this decision. They go wild when one song is the intro, then proceed to lose it again when another head banger track gets mashed up into the mix. Their song selection also was extremely bass heavy, creating a mood and environment that I am jealous I could not witness myself. One after another, Daft Punk melted the faces off of everybody in the crowd, each song more intense and heavy hitting than the last. Some of the mixed tracks were so good that they could have been singles on their own. This concert just went to prove that when it comes to techno, nobody can hold a candle to Daft Punk. Who better to remix Daft Punk than Daft Punk themselves? Well done, Daft Punk, our minds have been blown once again.
The concert itself had probably the best light show I have ever seen before. The dynamic duo played from a giant pyramid overlooking the crowd - not a stage. The pyramid was also covered in colorful LED lights that not only displayed abstract colors, but also images. Not once was the same pattern of lights used. Of course, the duo were dressed as robots and never took their helmets off. Behind them was a honeycomb grid of colorful LED lights. These lights were synced up to the music as well, but independent from the pyramid. They too never repeated the same patterns. Additionally, a giant LED television was behind the honeycomb grid. This TV was used to display words and creatively worked with the sound samples used. For example, when samples from "Television Rules the Nation" were used, the TV displayed static and when samples from "Touch It" were used, the TV flashed the lyrics of the song. To make things even better, a DVD was released that was not professionally made. Instead, it was made up of footage from over 100 different spectators. This really made you feel like you were at the show and almost never repeated the same angle twice and giving you the chance to see the show from angles that would not be available if the DVD was professionally filmed.
Free Music Review: Daft Punk does it live Hit: 5 Stars
Daft Punk's live album gives me cause to reflect on the nature of 'live' electronic performance, so that's where I will begin. When you consider the amount of production time for each of these tracks - the hours in the studio, the mixing, the editing, the tweaking - how could a band hope to recreate the same music live, on the fly? Furthermore, what does one do when the physicality of the performance is restricted to pushing buttons and manipulating computers?
Daft Punk doesn't really attempt to play much of their music live, as is typical with live electronic performances, but their answer to the above questions is to creatively mix their own tunes together, almost as if it was a DJ set. In essence, this IS a DJ set, but it features only one band, both artists are there, and they have complete access to their entire sample set, which allows for a heightened combinatorial possibility. An excellent example is the layering of Aerodynamic on top of One More Time. It works so well you would think the songs had been conceived together.
Other live touches include some extra filtering and extended, or at least different, arrangements. Since it's likely that the tunes are broken down into the usual sample groupings (e.g., bass, lead, chords, beats) they can bring these in and out of the mix at will, which allows a measure of variety. These can all be manipulated with additional effects, such as the aforementioned filtering or delay.
Overall, it's a very successful live album for the above reasons, but also because they do a great job integrating crowd noise. It gives one a great sense of the actual experience, minus the sweaty dancers, which is, depending on your personal preference, either a good thing or a bad thing. Kidding aside, it sounds like an amazing performance and definitely makes me want to catch Daft Punk next time they make it to the USA. That's probably the highest recommendation I can give a live album.
Free Music Review: Great, but honestly expected a little more. Hit: 5 Stars
First off, Let me just say that I am a casual fan of Daft Punk. I don't own any other album, but through osmosis have come to recognize and enjoy their stuff over the years.
The Recording has a great ambiance to it. Throughout the recording you can really hear the roar of the crowd. The music is definitely loud and clear. The Low end of the recording really kicks your subwoofer into full effect. I'm sure on any decent sound system this recording will knock your socks off, on a Great system you're gonna feel like you're there. That quality alone on the lo-fi amazon samples gave me cause for buying the full quality CD.
Alive 2007 does a great job of melting together their hits. Just by looking at the track listing you can see that each live "track" is like a mashup of two or three of their songs. Its keeps the performance fresh and familiar all at the same time. Its straight up like Daft Punk Night at the club, but everything transitions perfectly from song to song.
At times though, I kind of feel like there is more Build up, beat repeat, and hand-offs, than a climactic payoff on allot of the tracks. Though, it never gets stale cause there is always something happening musically.
For me, The musical "Run" from track 3 to 6 is pretty solid, then it takes a slow transition and buildup "breather" on Track 7. Actually, to be fair, Tracks 7 and 8 are more stand alone tracks that seem to work in the "hits" in a new fresh way. The Last runs that close out the CD 9-12 are all well executed and full of energy.
So i guess my favorite tracks would be 3-6 and 9-12.
3-6 and 9-12 are kind of the meat and cheese of the sandwich... but without the bread, mustard, and leatuce its not a sandwich now is it? In the end, a great purchase if you have any inclinations towards Daft Punk, it will serve you well.
