Free Music Notes for DiscoveryFree Music Review: A Great Discovery! Hit: 5 Stars
It was the moment for which I had waited 2 years, and the one for which many others had waited 4. I gleefully obtained my copy of Daft Punk's "Discovery", released today. And indeed, the album did give much to discover. There was no earlier European or Japanese release. Only one single from the album had been available, and I resisted the urge to purchase it. Untainted from influence and not knowing what to expect, I open the jewel case. Inside, I discover it is one of those double CD cases. I eagerly flip the tray to discover... a membership card to the Daft Club. Never announced before, there is a veritable smorgasbord of wonderful downloads to purchasers of the album, and for nobody else. I am happy and sad, because you are only allowed to install the software on one machine and I am away from my home PC right now.Anyway, the music itself is incredible. It is a bit different from the simple yet perfect disco beats of "Homework", and everything is a bit more energetic. Less repetitive as well, and even some digitized classical harp and soothing synth is thrown in on occasion. And now there are... vocals. In that wanky Cher/Eiffel 65 robotic voice no less. And in English mind you, by French people. So, you get Eiffel 65-ish sounding voices singing lyrics such as the following from "Digital Love": Ooh I don't know what to do About this dream and you I wish the dream comes true Ooh I don't know what to do About this dream and you We'll make the dream come true Why don't you play the game? Why don't you play the game? Not so profound. The backing track would have been so much better without the mushy shit, in my opinion. It reminds me of the video game Sonic R, where the music and vocals were fabulous but the crappy English translated lyrics made the music laughable. Knowing the comic reputation of the two synthsmiths, I'd like to think that is the case. All in all, an amazing album. There is no "Da Funk" or "Around the World" hit this time though. Just an album chock full of eardrum thumping goodness. Do yourself a major favor by buying this CD!
Free Music Review: One more TIME! Hit: 5 Stars
My discovery of Daft Punk is interesting, to say the least... I discovered them for the first time just two weeks ago when I was curious to hear what popular music from Paris sounded like (other than the production work of Madonna's "Music") and picked up their debut release "Homework" after amazon.com recommendations. So the moment I learned they had a new release coming out, I reserved it in advance, was the first customer at my local music store this morning of its release, rushed it out to the car and practically tore off the plastic with my teeth in my enthusiasm. I had been very impressed by "Homework" and adored the new song "One More Time", so I was looking forward to what promised to be a lighthearted work of art, a genuine rarity in this current world of N'Sync and Britney Spears. What I wasn't expecting was for this to be such an INGENIOUS lighthearted work of art! Managing to better the experimentation from the first offering, these guys are really mastering this musical language they've been crafting all these years. Influences spanning some three decades as wonderful and diverse as Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, Dr. Dre, The Beatles, Prince, Andy Gibb, Brian Wilson and much more can all be heard here, but like all works of genius they are crafted as inspiration for a listening experience which sounds at once both familiar and unlike anything else you've ever heard before. Not a single bad track dots the disc, and personal faves include the lighthearted 70s rush of "Digital Love" and "High Life", and the boys show us they can even switch direction with "Nightvision" and "Voyager". Not since Prince and The Revolution's "Parade" have I heard such a unique and experimental new recording from a fresh act so filled with promise. What will Daft Punk do next as they continue to grow? Well, as long as they keep that strong artistic commitment and special lighthearted sense of beauty their work wears so well, rest assured that it won't be dull!
Free Music Review: The Best Hit: 5 Stars
Daft Punk is the best. No one can deny it. This CD is a marvelous work of art. There's everything on this album. Not like other artists who have albums with the same song revamped on it over and over again. This CD has the best 4 opening songs anyone could ask for. We all have heard "One More Time." The song which really made Daft Punk take off in the US. But in my opinion, it is one of the low points on the CD. But it is still a great song, I'm illustrating how good this CD is. The next track is Aerodynamic, one of my favorites. One of the best electro-guitar lines ever in it. Kind of Megaman sounding towards the end, but the guitar line elevates the song. After Aerodynamic you have Digital Love. This song gets my vote for the Feel Good Song of All Time. It's got a summer feel to it, and is a great track, though many think it is cheesy sounding. Afterwards comes Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. A fan favorite from this track. It has a good beat and groove, with cool voice effects and the typical build up of patterns. It is definitely a great song to work out to. Skipping down to Superheroes, which is a great track that has a retro feel to it. Skipping once again to Something About Us, which in my opinion is another favorite. It's a slower song, sounds like a song that would be playing on a honeymoon... The track after that is Voyager, which is probably one of the best songs ever. It IS repetitive, I'll admit, but it's something I can never get tired of. It has the feel of enjoying a walk alone at night on a university campus. Great song. Verdis Quo has a great medival sound to it. Short Circuit is a really cool idea. Someone on here wrote a review saying "it sounds like the synthesizer short-circuited" which is the whole point of the track. Face to Face is a good song, which doesn't deserve the bad reviews it's gotten. Too Long is exactly that, too long. But it still has that Daft Punk groove that is hard to deny. All in all, this is one of my favorite albums ever. I strongly recommend this.
Free Music Review: Highly underrated Hit: 5 Stars
This is a classic example of an album which is more than the sum of it's parts (read: tracks). Listening to Discovery is a journey, an atmospheric one. A little cheesy maybe, but it doesn't spoil the fun with this one. From the opening "One More Time" to the 10 minute during "Too Long", I can't stop myself to run to the stereo again and pressing play once more to take it all in. Ok, honestly, I'm not that into "Veridis Quo", yet it's of enough quality to not have me skip it. That said, any other track is outstanding, unique, and is filled with moments where you can tell Daft Punk have had a blast creating it. You can feel the joy and energy, and that is what seperates good albums from bad ones.
As I said, I pretty much adore every single track, but the highlight of the album must be whenever Discovery reaches track number 10 "Voyager". It sums an immense intensity of emotion, capturing the entire journey of the album in an 3,47 minute during fantasy. This song does something to me, something no other song has ever done.
Another thing I like my albums, is diversity of tracks. And Discovery got that with loads. Although some tracks tend to look a like, the complete package is best summed up as a joyfull rollercoaster, reaching highpoints of happyness and dancing joy, followed by moments of slower, yet highly melodical points of sadness.
Sure, if you're a high demanding listener who can criticize every single drum when listening with full attention, you may find the cheesy-ness disturbing. Yet, it doesn't deserve the low ratings I've seen flying around everywhere (not just here). It must not be compared with their debut Homework, which was packed with one after another moments of pumping beats. Discovery is here to please us in a completely different aspect. Lay down, close your eyes, and experience the journey which is called (clearly for a reason) Discovery. You'll memorize it as one of the best journey's till date.
Free Music Review: Simply Astonishingly Beautiful; A Downright Classic Hit: 5 Stars
I started listening to Daft Punk in 2007. My first purchase was their live album released that year, Alive 2007. I thought it would be a good place to start. And honestly, other than a few nice points here and there, I hated it. I certainly could not have enjoyed it not knowing any of their songs! I realize that now, but, at the time it seemed Daft Punk was an overrated, lame dance band.
Then, in 2008, I bought their best of. Just cuz I'd found that, with dance bands, the studio albums are overlong and mucky and filler-ridden. Daft Punk certainly grew on me a bit there. Then I picked up Homework. It seemed like a good album, but it was so damn scratchy and distorted! It hurt my head after a while. But they certainly seemed interesting. Then, I picked up Discovery.
Discovery is one of those albums you come across once every few years and hate yourself for not having picked it up when it came out; Beck's Odelay, the Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique, and Arcade Fire's Funeral come to mind. But, compared to Discovery, those albums are filler-ridden. This one of a kind album blows my mind with each listening.
What makes it so good is that it highlights every emotion you feel, sometimes without lyrics. When you're feeling wild and want to party, you've got the cheesy disco hit "One More Time". When you feel head over your heels with a beautiful person you've just met and feel like you're about to burst with butterflies (sounds lame, but oddly, it happens), you've got "Digital Love". When you go out with that person and you are subsequently dumped, you get the beautiful instrumental "Veridis Quo", a certain album highlight. And when you feel like an absolute freak and just want to bug out, you have "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger".
Every single song would be a certain album highlight on any other album out now. This is a lovely album that I look forward to bonding with these next few decades.
