EEXXCCEELLEENNTT USE OF SYNTH.5 out of 5 5)Crescendolls: Okay, get over the stupid name for this song, cause it's kinda good. Not the regular Daft Punk. 3 and a half out of 5 7)Superheroes: Not bad for a Barry Manilow song. Not bad for a Daft Punk song. Not bad for any song. Decent, danceable song.4 out of 5 8)High Life: MSN marked this song "explicit", but there is no lyrics (the occasional breath from the girl does not count as lyrics...what the heck is she saying anyway?)and...is it possible for music to be explicit? Face to Face---vocals by Todd Edwards are cool and make sense while rhyming. 4 out of 5 14)Too Long: The title speaks for itself. Free Music Review: Electronica Lives! Hit: 5 Stars
It's been four long years since Daft Punk released their first album, "Homework" and it seems like the techno scene has risen and fallen as sharply as the stock market during that time period. Fortunately for fans of the genre, this French duo has come sweeping back upon the stage to inject some seriously needed fun into the music, something that seems to have been seriously missing over the past year or so."Discovery" is a throwback to old school, booty moving tunes of the 80's and it's a change in style that Daft Punk takes in a swaggering stride that displays their mastery of the sampler. These guys can pick a groove blindfolded, and it shows in such snaptacular numbers as "One More Time", "Digital Love", and wonderfully wry "Too Long", and they don't just drop beats, they surgically insert them. Daft Punk blends intelligent sampling, urbane lyrics, and soulful beats with the results being an album which, by all rights, should be the beat manifesto for this summer's dance floors, and all for seasons past that. The only short-coming of the entire album is the gimmicky Daft Club addition to the package, which consists of a credit-card like club I.D. which allows you to go online and download special extras from the band. This turns into an absurdly long process which begs the question "Why not include all the special software on the CD?" The end result is a collection of extra songs which can only be played through the provided software, and are tracked by some watch-dog every time you play them. The entire thing seems poorly thrown together, but since it doesn't affect the quality of the album in any way, I haven't let it affect the rating...at least you get a cool Daft Club card to go in your wallet. The bottom line is that this album is one of the best electronica works I have heard this year, and you should definitely go out and get it, just skip the downloads.

If you're thinking that Daft Punk is just another Euro dance outfit, think again. If you've heard of their association with Mirwais and Madonna, hear them yourself. Moby has his brand of ambient-industrial dance music. Groove Armada has their electronic style. Daft Punk? Well, theirs is a irresistable 60's/70's retro funk intertwined with 90's/00's electronic vibe. By acieving this deadly concoation, they have reached the plateauof craft and artistry. On this follow-up to their excellent 1998 debut, Daft Punks starts off with the funky One More Time which makes u wanna hop onto that dancefloor and shake ur thang. Other gems include the electrifying follow-up Areodynamics, Nightvision, Something About Us and the 10-minute closer Too Long (no pun intended I suppose). Sampling from everyone including Barry Manilow (yes Barry Manilow), Daft Punk is able to further funki-fy their music. Although the first half of the CD tends to be more engaging, the rest of the CD is anything but your standard/usual radio fare. The secret to enjoying the Daft punk experience: listen to the CD in it's entirety. You'll get hooked almost immediately. A little bonus on this CD is the Daftcard which allows you to download a Daft Punk player for playing exclusive remixes and rare tracks from the Internet using the card number (much like your credit card). However, due to intensive security concerns, the download takes a while if you are not connected to cable or hi-speed network. But once it's done, you'll find it worthwhile. The songs played will be kept track and no, you can't distribute or download it due to Digital Rights Management (DRM). This ain't no Napster. Then again, it's quite cool overall, both the CD and the downloads. Discover Daft Punk. If you're game for more, try Homework, their debut.
Free Music Review: ode to the dance Hit: 5 Stars
Daft Punk have made cheesy cool again. Discovery isn't about deeper meanings or self-reflection; there's only one absolute truth here and that's having fun. The album grabs you by the shoulders, slaps you in the face and shouts: "Don't stop the dancing!" And everyone's dancing here - ravers, punks, classic rockers and disco queens are all having a good time together. After "One More Time" sets the celebratory mood (isn't the loud sigh reminiscent of John Travolta, aka Danny Zuko, in Summer Loving?), Discovery only gets better. "Digital Love's" exaggerated guitar solos are a toast to glam rock and "Crescendolls" transforms a one-person-before-a-mirror party into a stadium of enthusiasts doing the wave and collectively screaming "hey!" The last half of "Superheroes" is the perfect soundtrack for a Disney World laser light extravaganza and "Verdis Quo" makes us cheer for the underdog; we can all picture Rocky or the runners from Chariots of Fire training to the song. While the lyrics throughout Discovery are elementary, the sounds are the exact opposite. Daft Punk melds church bells, 80s synthesizers, clashing cymbals and drummers in marching bands, and sprinkles it all with some glitter and lights. We can breakdance to "Short Circuit" and profess our love to "Something About Us." In that song, we don't even have to do the pleading because the whining sound of the keyboard does it for us. By the time "Too Long" comes around, Daft Punk have brought us to a new, liberated place and you wonder why you couldn't have made it their on your own. Discovery is one of the top five albums of the year thus far. You don't have to take my word for it. At Madonna's recent Madison Square Garden show, she remixed her highly anticipated oldie "Holiday" with "One More Time." "Holiday" has never sounded better.
Free Music Review: Even Gap think's they'll sell well Hit: 5 Stars
Ok, I was just going to give this CD a 5 star rating just cause I liked it, but I think it deserves a description even though 140 people have already reviewed it. Nonetheless...I'll have to admit I first went for the cliche "One More Time" (I say cliche because that's what nearly everyone heard first from Daft Punk's new album), when I saw it on a commercial for MTV2. When I finally saw the video I was enchanted by the music and the video; I had to have more. I bought the CD and have been dilligently searching for the other videos and I found that Daft Punk currently has at least 4 videos out from his new album, the first four songs of the album, all sections of a story that I find to be captivating, and greatly unfinished, so hopefully they'll get a video out for each track (they each deserve one). The CD is AWESOME, all sorts of music, from generic pop to house music that will literally make you get up and dance to industrial sounding melodic techno, and not too much of anything. As many of the other reviewers have said, this does have a very 80's feel to it, but I (a teenager) have been exposed to the best of both worlds (80's and modern music) and I personally find "Discovery" to be a VERY superb mix of both. It's so refreshing to have house music with such good vocals, and the squealing guitar tracks are welcomed breaks from the smooth but hard dance tracks. I've even heard Daft Punk's older stuff, including Stardust and "Homework", and I personally think this is a redone band that everyone should listen to. I guarantee that if you've found this album through references to other bands or "customers who bought this also bought..." then you will not be disappointed, in fact you will love this album. Definitely my best buy here on Amazon.com
