Free Music Review: Vive le Punk Hit: 5 Stars
The French duo follow up their highly acclaimed debut album 'Homework' with a modern classic. Breaking away from the addictive yet slightly limited hard-house genre as heard in 'Homework', Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo display their originality and inventive genius on 'Discovery'. This album mixes almost all types of music. From contrepuntal baroque melodies to extreme 80s funk, from Jamiroquai-esque grooves to space-age sounds, 'Discovery' encompasses all. Dance floors all over the world were rocked by the slightly 'poppy' yet extremely catchy 'One More Time', but people expecting an album full of similar tunes will be surprised. The second single 'Aerodynamic' is rather less mainstream, but to appreciators of music resembles something that the music industry has been missing for a long time - something which is not afraid to cross barriers. 'Discovery' takes the listener on a journey full of 'Yes' style guitar solos, music-by-layers, hardcore vocals (Romanthony - what energy!), house influence and not forgetting Daft Punk's natural funk. This album is indespensable and if it's not already in your CD collection - GO AND BUY IT!!! Standout tracks: Aerodynamic, Harder Better Faster Stronger, Superheroes, Veridis Quo.
Free Music Review: A cut above the norm because they aren't normal... Hit: 5 Stars
Okay, I know what most hardcore techno-heads are thinking if they're reading this..."Oh, Daft Punk is commercialized techno/house, they're not that good." That's a pity, because I didn't write this review for them anyway (slight evil laughter). This is for those who are hooked on the album's first single, "One More Time", or the second single, "Aerodynamic." This is, first and foremost, a quality album. This is an album you'll like for the great music, with its body-shakin' beats, infectious melodies and stellar grooves. But forget all that for a second, because this is one of the few albums that I own that I felt like I got my ... worth. And that's rare. Not only are the album songs excellent (check out "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" or "Face To Face"), but you get free membership to Daft Punk's new internet music service, the DaftClub. New songs every week or two that build on and expand the album's scope...highly innovative, not to mention cool. So go and buy it, and while you're at it, go buy "Homework" too. Both are well worth your hard-earned cash, and trust me on this.Oh, and I can't resist it...sorry, folks, but this has to be done. ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US. :o)
Free Music Review: A milestone for techno Hit: 5 Stars
I've been listening to Daft Punk since '96 when i was into the whole phatpants/party scene. They used to produce great tracks back then that got you pumped up, and were exhilarating to see live. How fun was their 2nd going to be? I found this second album to be a new classic. I really feel that it is one of the first electronic albums to really show that electronic music has a soul, a drive, a meaning, and an art to it. This album harkens back to the days of those massive 60's & 70's rock bands who had a theme or story that drove and influenced their whole album (think darkside of the moon, etc.). Discovery is just like those albums. If you have seen the videos for the first couple of tracks you know that DP is putting them out in the sequence of the album and that they all follow the same storyline. When listening to the album you can imagine the rest of the space odessy for yourself. This is not just an album, its a soundtrack, a ballet, a composition. It has been expertly crafted to take you on a complete ride through different states of happiness, emotion, and funk. We can only hope that they release the whole album/movie on DVD. A milestone for electronic music. We're here to stay, baby, and this album is one of the cornerstones.
Free Music Review: Dancing my face off... Hit: 5 Stars
After the huge excitement and then equal disappointment I went through with the release of Human After All, I find myself falling in love all over again with the duo's classic records. Discovery is easily one of my favorite cds from the last decade. The blend of house, vocoders, and spot-on production makes this on of the funnest dance records in my collection.
It opens up with one of the catchiest beats I've ever heard... "One More Time" is a VERY appropriate title, as it's hard to listen to it only once in a sitting. "Aerodynamic" keeps the dance floor moving, and "Digital Love" is an electro-pop masterpeice. "Harder, Better" is one of my favorites; so many memories of packed parties grooving to that tune. And the next track, "Crescendolls", is one giant house freakout. Other favorites include "Superheroes" (so cool) and "Face to Face" (tied for my favorite Daft Punk track with "Indo Silver Club" from Homework).
This album comes out at just about every party we throw; it's just one classic tune after another. With this record and Homework, Daft Punk have produced some of the funnest dance tracks in the world... and while their new album has a certain charm, it's got nothing on records like Discovery.
