Free Music Review: Da Funk Hit: 5 Stars
I remember first seeing the music videos for "Da Funk" and "Around the World" on MTV (believe it or not) several years ago and just being completely blown away by the infectious dance beats. "Around the World" in particular really grabbed me by the jugular. It is by far the catchiest dance song I have heard in the past decade, next to Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head". The bass-heavy beat is incredible. Listening to "Around the World" brings back memories of me dancing (drunkenly) to this song in the nightclubs back in my college days. "Da Funk" was and still is equally cool in its own right. It is extremely catchy. I just love the synthesized beats. Just like "Around the World", "Da Funk" has that incredible deep bass hook that gets you on the dancefloor. As much as I love Daft Punk's follow up "Discovery", "Homework" has to be my favorite of the two cds. Granted that "Homework" lacks the warmth of "Discovery", "Homework" has a raw, live feel that its predecessor lacked. "Revolution 909" reminds me of something I have heard during my journeys to Chicago back in the day and my friends and I would be cruising to our favorite nightclub with the radio cranked up, and this song would be on the airwaves (more like a song with the same beat). I also love the shimmering techno track "Indo Silver Club" as well. Despite being seven years old, "Homework" still holds up to this very day which is not an easy task to do because trends comes and goes in dance music but "Homework" is an exception to that rule and it still sounds fresh and new to me.
Free Music Review: Great Fresh Dance! Hit: 5 Stars
Daft Punk are into something new, when this Cd was released i had never heard something like this. They simply mix diffent genres and turn it into great dance music, this Cd is almost as good as Discovery, they are quite simular too. "Revolution 909" is classic house for example. "Da Funk" is funk indeed, with some tough beats, probably the best track on the cd together with the mega hit of 1997 "Around the world" which had a very good video aswell with Robots, Mummies etc. dancing on stage. The track is dance-funk with a voice constantly saying "Around the world, around the world". "Burning" sound like a Dj is scratching on a Cd, some cool backround beats too. Some people would probably call it a pain in the [back side], i would call it a new fresh sound. Rollin' & Scrating and Rock N roll are based on the same ideas but not as good. "Indo Silver club" is a good dance tune with the sound of bees, yeah pretty odd but don't be surprised this is Daft punk afterall. Phoenix is also among the better songs on this Cd, it got funky dance sound almost addictive. "Teachers" is an weird one, two diffrent voices talking about Dre and Snoop dogg, dunno what they got that inspiration from. "Funk add" is almsot identical to "Da Funk" i don't get why they made 2 songs instead of just 1. Overall it's a very good CD, they got new ideas and new music, a few songs aren't so good and 12 songs instead of 16 would make sense. But i rate the album very good cause of the new stuff they make and the hit songs i previously mentioned.
Free Music Review: Great dance music! Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this CD in 1997, when I was in grade 7. Why? I liked the songs "Da Funk" and "Around the World", and the 'popular' people liked it. First listen, I thought it wasn't bad; a bit repititive, but bearable. Now, 4 years later, I've relistned to this CD and I must say it has gotten even better with time! Great acid house beats, infectious riffs, and wonderful samples. Songs like "Rollin' and Scratchin'" and "Rock 'n' Roll" are not really immediatly accessable, but are amazing songs! It's like a metal artist went techno! GREAT CD!! Daftendirekt- 3/5 Interesting sample, cool beat. WDPK 83.7 fm- 4/5 Really fun short piece. Revolution 909- 5/5 Quite possibly the best track on the CD! Da Funk- 4/5 Nice bass riff, great texturing at end. Phoenix- 5/5 Amazingly weird. Fresh- 2/5 Annoying. Around the World- 4/5 Great song to dance to! Rollin' & Scratchin'- 4.5/5 Take trash and house and mix them together. Teachers- 4/5 Fun, odd, but still great. High Fidelity- 5/5 Amazing sample, great synth drums. Rock'n Roll- 4.5/5 Like R&S; thrashy house. Oh Yeah- 4/5 Silliness at it's high point. Burnin- 5/5 My first DP song that I really got into. Indo Silver Club- 4/5 Great to dance to. Alive- 3/5 Somewhat annoying. Funk Ad- 4/5 Sums up the album: creative, fun, silly, great.
Free Music Review: I Was Dancing Hit: 5 Stars
This is one of the most important albums of the 90's. Put it this way, I remember where I was, and what I was doing the first time I heard this record.I was dancing, by the way. If you have any roots in house, r&b, funk, soul, and rock n' roll, they cover the visceral experience of these latter genres. One has to understand the fact that it's not a deeply serious record, which lifts the burden of digging for something truly meaningful. Because, when you let your guard down and open your ears, this record will make you smile more with every listen. It's so carefree, and fun. That's all the attitude you need to dance. Sure, this album may not deserve 5 stars for musicality. But, its sheer importance to me, and its ability to sound fresh with each new day while flashing me back to the moment I heard Daft Punk for the first time has made me more than just a fan. I am Daft Punk's disco disciple. Also, I can't believe how many people considered rock n roll, and rollin' n scratchin the worst tracks on this album. I love them! I guess these are an acquired taste. But, those are among the tracks they often seem to choose when playing live. I saw them live from an Oakland warehouse, and they turned me inside out! I've had very few live performances match their raw intensity that they've perfected so well. Daft punks indeed.
