Free Music Review: Perfection? Only in all areas!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a great album! Totally unexpected by me beause I just found out about it a week before it came out. I started checking out a few of the songs that they had on Youtube. I was highly impressed with "As we Enter" and "Road To Zion" which isn't on the album and I'm not sure how I missed this song. I bought this Day one from Taget. It comes in a nice stock paper CD holder that includes a booklet with all of the lyrics and a poster of Nas and Damien Marley at the Studio.

The Production is Great! It has a great mix of Hip-Hop, African Drums and Reggae/African sounds. The album isn't over powered by any one of these sounds.

The Artist are great! This album proves to me why Nas is in my top 5 list. He has a soft spoken delivery but a powerful message. He's also a great lyracist. This is my first Damian Marley CD. Now I want to go get "Welcome To Jamrock". Being a Ziggy Marley fan I was only expecting great things from Damian. He delivered more than great things though. I love this guy's message with Spiritual overtones. Makes me question myself why I'm not going to church. He has a great delivery and doesn't tone down the Jamaican accent one bit! Together their styles mesh perfectly.

The Message is Great! This album talks about the harsh realities and gives us a front row seat into the minds of Nas and Damian Marley on topics like Genocide, Religion, government and how we all need to make this world a better place.

The Songs are all Great! You won't find the accustomed filler we see in many albums today. The songs flow seamlessly together and the arrangement is perfect.

The Break Down and why I like each song:

1. As we Enter - A great intro Song that has Nas and Damian going back and forth on a beat with a nice bass line, people saying "Go Go Go", sounds like an Organ and other sounds. This is the song you bump in the ride. 5/5

2. Tribes at War - Has a nice sounding choir of what I imagine in my head to be an African Tribe against drums. Nas begins with a story of our History. Where we were and where we are. We are at a point were Gangs fight each other but shouldn't we be fighting together? This song has K'naan whom I've never heard of. He sounds good and stays on message. The song ends with Damians verse. He sounds exquisite on this song. His verse puts a smile on my face especially the way he comes into the verse. 5/5

3. Strong will continue - Starts with Nas talking about staying focused and going forward while being pulled down and up. The Chorus is great and Damien does great ont he Chorus. This is a pick me up song in that it has a message of keeping on even under the pressures. This song is just all around great. At the end I think Nas shows his emotion and I say this because he touches on infidelity and he mentions his "Ex". 5/5

4. Leaders - A shout out to the leaders and not just our government leaders. Nas tells a story of a successful person and how others listen to him and Watch what he does. He also talks about Malcom X and leaders liek him that were taken from us. I like how Damian switches up the sound in his verse sound. 5/5

5. Friends - Is such a good song. The production is spot on. Damian and Nas Sound Great. Your real friends won't do you wrong are some of the truest words I've heard. 5/5

6. Count your blessings - Count your blessings is a great message song. Nas touches on the birth of his son as a blessing. This is a good overall song. The message has substance, the production is good and the artist delivery is great. 5/5

7. Dispear - Has another great African Chorus, Drums and Reggae beat to go with it. I love the way the Damian and the Chorus women sing "Dispear". Nas's verse in this song is sick! He compares the Masters and the Masses. This is exactly how I feel. It's like Nas reached into my head and put the words to pen and paper. The Masters will try to force us Masses to fight each other, confuse us and sell us things like gun and processed food to put us in a pine box quicker. "Who are the masters? They are Gangsters, They are the Bankers, The ones who Tax us." Just typing this review and looking at the lyrics versus what I hear I realize that Damian is talking about a Spear and Dispear. Very Clever Usuage! The Spear, in the song accompanied by a Spear throwing sound, has been used by many leaders and warriors. Throughout history in the non literal sense it has slain many! Dispear causes fear, desperation and depression. He says they can't Tarry you and I'm thinking he means that Dispear won't allow you to wait before you do something. Great song all around. 5/5

8. Land of Promise - Great song. Highlight is definitely Damians verse here. It's Sick! He talks about places in Africa being like places in America. The way he does this though is nice. Nas sounds good here too. 5/5

9. In his Own Words - Did I say I was going to buy "Welcome To Jamrock"? I'd hate to keep tooting Damians horn but he is Perfect on this Album. This is one of Nas's best Songs also. Great Song! 5/5

10. Nah Mean - I love this song "Nah mean"? Good beat and great verses by both. 5/5

11. Patience - This samples Sabali. I didn't know what that was so I checked it out on Youtube. These are the lyrics in English:
"We came to have fun with music
The world is a place of amusement
We have a good time doing that.
Audience!
Patience! Patience is worth everything!
Patience! Patience is' good.
If you love someone, patience is worth everything
If you love a man, patience is worth everything
If you love a woman, patience is worth everything
Patience, patience, patience is good." -Youtube Poster ImhotepHoll

I think this song is good. It's one that will get stuck in my head and I will randomly want to hear it for years. IMO the Lyrics make this song. Nothing special production wise but the subject matter and how they express it is what makes this song. 4/5

12. My Generation - Lil Wayne? No! Well that's how I went into this song but he suprised me. He stayed on subject and sounded good for Lil Wayne. :) The only thing is ,"This Generation, I'm a represent, A generation led by a Black President, Now how's that for change? Who knew that could change? I don't even look at the flag the same." Not to go politcal but Obama is just like the people who have already been in office and were part of this elitest system. He's no different and we should look at the flag/President the same. Joss Stones sounds great and was a suprise addition to the CD. She has some soul in her and her voice sound raw in the best sense of the word. 5/5

13. Africa Must Wake up - Now this is how you close an Album. It kind of sounds like a closing of a live show. The way Damian say, "We can Work it out," is real cool. The song is upbuilding and also speaks on the African Past as Kings and Queens, Nas shines on this song and calls us Distant Relatives. K'naan is back and I'm not sure which language he is speaking but it sounds good nonetheless. The message is good when you look at the translation. 5/5

BUY this CD! Don't Download it! Don't Copy it! Buy it or See a Live Show so that the Money Goes to Nas and Damian!

Distant Relatives Poster

International Hip Hop superstar Nas and Grammy-winning artist Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley join creative forces to release this highly anticipated and exciting 2010 collaboration. This is an album created by the two serious artists to explore and celebrate the correlations and deep-rooted connections between reggae and Hip Hop, tracing both sounds back to the African motherland that is both the cradle of humanity and the wellspring of mankind's music. The project features the signature instrumentation and musicianship of Marley with the hard-hitting beats and lyrics of Nas. Distant Relatives traces the direct line from Dancehall Reggae's breakthrough moment 40 years ago to the rise of Hip Hop several years later.
