Living up to the expectation of being the youngest son of a modern day legend can't be easy. But Damian Marley hasn't just stepped out of his father Bob Marley's shadow. He's strolled to his rightful place center stage, into the spotlight. On his third and most impressive release, Welcome to Jamrock, he's taken the roots rebel music of his pops and added the sounds of today.
Jamrock is a flavorful amalgam of r & b, hip-hop, dancehall and dub laid over some of the truest reggae our generation has to offer. Always one to keep his feet on the ground, Damian's songs are a reflection of the good and bad sides of life. With the ability to juggle topics effortlessly, the subject matter ranges from the social and economic hardships of Jamaican street life to spiritually passionate love songs, "The Youngest Veteran" always keeps it real. The diverse sounds of Jamrock are a testament to Marley's ability as a leader of the new old school in front of the mic and behind the sound boards. 11 out of the 14 tracks are co-produced by Damian and brother Stephen (who also appears on much of the album).Speaking of guest appearances, Jamrock's peppered with them. "Khaki Suit" finds Jr. Gong kicking it with the legendary duo of reggae music's elder statesmen Bounty Killer and Eek-a-Mouse. Hip hop's street-wise disciple Nas lends his masterfully aggressive flows on the politically charged "Road to Zion". And the unlikely pairing of Damian and R&B bad boy (turned reality TV star) Bobby Brown on "Beautiful" comes off much better than one might think. Acknowledging his roots (and family tree) Jr. pays homage to the elder Marley on two tracks "Pimpa's Paradise" (featuring a lyrically proficient Black thought of The Roots) is a revamped and reworked version of his father's reggae classic and "Move!" borrows the beat and chorus from "Exodus". Although the true depth may be lost to some, this summer's instant classic and title track, "Welcome to Jamrock", is included on an album sure to be a classic itself. All that said, the centerpiece (and album opener) is "Confrontation", Mr. Marley's fiery flow, lyrical ferocity and sincerity are undeniable.
The fact of the matter is every song on Jamrock jumps off. So the next time the mediocre DJ at your local watering hole plays the title track, approach the booth and let'em know Jr. Gong isn't a one hit wonder. Just keep in mind, "Rasta rolls Right". Dorian Wolak

The confrontational title track of his third album (which entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart at Number 7, the biggest opening week ever for a reggae artist), deals with vacationing "haves" partying on the backs of increasingly desperate "have-nots." It has fomented a storm of protest from corporate entities who claim that Marley has presented his homeland (or more accurately, their interests) in a negative light. Another high point is "Pimpa's Paradise," a heartbreaker about drugs leading to prostitution, backed by a vulnerable-sounding acoustic guitar. Produced by Damian and Stephen Marley, it's an eclectic, sophisticated mix, constructed over treacherous rhythmic undercurrents, illuminated by empathy, courage and soul.
