I just discover this, right now. A friend gave me his CD to listen and to know what I was thinking about it. It's just beautiful. A lot of emotions inside those songs. A calm folk atmosphere. Listing this album send us inside the intimity of the hearts, inside a real universe full of authenticity. With a lot, a lot of simplicity. The Essential. Yes, just beautiful. Only that. I think this is a very, very good album. I did not put it in my vault of all-time greats, but it is worth writing about for several reasons.
In our world of manufactured bands, American Idol pop-culture capitalism and hi-tech sound generators, what we do have in Damien Rice is an artist who did not compose these songs, or write these lyrics with fame or revenue in mind. This is an artist who wrote and performed from what was (and is) truly the essence of his inner-self. He prepared his music without care for what the listener was going to like. Damien Rice on this CD is so strikingly accurate to his emotion that you get the sense he is not using his voice to sing with, but rather his heart to convey with. This is the type of talent we need to reserve the title "Artist" for, instead of randomly smattering it around as applied to anyone who picks up a microphone or a 6-string. The word "soul" is reborn on this CD as to what it should also; someone singing from the soul. I feel his pains and his angst on each track. Some listeners prefer not to feel these things as a result of a song, but if a song is put out there that is powerful enough to do this, ....well, it is an exceptional work.
Damien, stay true to the way you put this work togther. You are a lone survivor left to carry on the true art of talented expression. I cannot listen to one more bass/drum computerized track, backing some trendy punk who is doing his best to make his mark on "cool". You have proven with this album that there are those of us out there who appreciate true music stylings.

I bought this disk after hearing Canonball on the radio. I am riveted by the disk every time I listen to it. Damian Rice is a very special songwriter and vocalist. I highly recommend it.

if it wasnt for me taking a chance on the movie closer and watching it and hearing his song "the blowers daughter" i probably would have never heard of damien rice. i enjoy his music. even tho i dont own one of his cd's but soon i hope*....i listne to the snippets of his songs all the time on amazon. but i watch the music video all the time that is on the closer dvd. but yeah i would recommend him to anyone anyday.
