Free Music Notes for Very Best of Dan Fogelberg

Free Music Review: Amazing Man, Musician & Album
Hit: 5 Stars

This album as well as the rest of Dan Fogelberg's work are needed for any truly complete collection of American music. I agree with other posters that this album needs "Power Of Gold" to make it a perfect snapshot of Dan's finest work. With his recent passing on Dec. 16, 2007 after a 3 year battle with Advanced Prostate Cancer, there is yet another reason to purchase ALL of his albums to support the legacy of this wonderful man, musician and husband.

Dan, you have touched countless lives with the gifts of your music. We love you, miss you and will always cherish the love you have shown to your fans for the last 35 years! Rest in peace now my brother. You are completely healed.

To Jean Fogelberg:

Jean, may you somehow find strength and peace with the passing of your wonderful husband. Words cannot be said to express what a wonderful gift your husband was to this world and how many millions mourn along with you. I will forever hold Dan close in my heart and hope to jam with him in my afterlife.

Peace be with you,

Patrick

Free Music Review: A treasure chest introduction to a great singer-songwriter
Hit: 5 Stars

As a long-time music buff, I certainly remembered hearing "Leader Of The Band" all over the radio and "Part Of The Plan" was one of my favorite songs. What I didn't realize until I bought this CD and started to sit down and listen to it was how many songs brought back memories. Out of 17 songs, I can say without hyperbole that at least 10 of them were favorite song worthy.

Fogelberg's voice may be the first thing that greets the listener, but when you look at the liner notes, you realize that he wrote most of, if not all of the songs. With his homage to his father in "Leader Of The Band" and the exquisite sadness of "Same Old Lang Syne," he paints a picture that the discerning listener can appreciate.

But Fogelberg is more than a ballad singer. There are several up-tempo songs that keep the listener from getting too mellow and force you to guess what's next.

Strap yourself in: You're in for the journey of your musical lifetime.

Free Music Review: A very good and complete greatest hits of a great singer !
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not American, I'm Québécois, but here in Québec, we know all about your music, and all about your singers, and I can definitively tell you : Dan Fogelberg is really one of your greatest singer. He is natural, honest, upright, and he believes (and makes us believe) in what he does in his career. In this album, you can find many nice pictures of Dan, and the songs are all excellents. From "Part of the plan" (his first big hit in 1973) to "A love like this" (20 years later...) and from the inspired "Longer" to the marvellous "Lonely in love", you can discover here the best of his work. "Believe in me", one of my favourite song of Dan, is there too... If you don't have any record of him, this "best of" is a good way to start your collection. This is a great portrait of Dan Fogelberg, a very sensitive and talented man. Yes Dan, I "Believe in you" !

Free Music Review: Best single disc overview available
Hit: 5 Stars

For those casual fans of Dan Fogelberg's music, this is the best single disc overview of his career. "The Very Best of" (1991)contains 17 tracks handpicked by Dan himself and the disc runs to almost 75 minutes. The only song that that seems out of place is the first track "Netherlands," which should be substituted with the only glaring omission from this set, the 1978 hit single "The Power of Gold." Also, the minor hit "Go Down Easy" from Dan's country/bluegrass album could have been included for a more complete overview of his singles. In 2003, Sony released the "Essential Dan Fogelberg." However, "The Very Best of" is the better collection. Essential contains only fourteen tracks, including three that are not on the very best of (There's A Place in The World For A Gambler, The Power of Gold, and Phoenix) but omits six tracks found on Very Best Of. If you want the hits, buy this disc!

Free Music Review: Dan's Best
Hit: 5 Stars

While I am a Dan Fogelberg fan, this was the first CD I've purchased. I have several LP's. I was totally pleased with the CD. It is certainly the best collection of Dan's works. There is only one selection that I would have left off. "She Don't Look Back". It is simply not quality and seems not to be his style. Dan's best feature, in my opinion, is his ability to be a storyteller of the best stories. The quality music & lyrics always come through. His voice is fine and easy to listen to. The arrangements and instrumentation are always first quality. I hope his health allows him someday to return to the studio. I'm sure his struggles with his health and mortality will offer a wealth of new stories and music. If you are Dan Fogelberg fan at all, you have to have this CD.
