Free Music Notes for Catch That Train!Free Music Review: You Don't Need Kids to Love a Good Record Hit: 4 Stars
This is kids rock in the same sense that the Beatles were when I was a kid; bright silly happy bouncy sing-songy songs. Nothing free to be, no learning, no deeper meaning; just a bunch of train songs (sample title: "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie.") The musicianship is sublime and oozing with fun; Zanes mixes country, ukelele, African chants, rock'n'roll, Guthrie folk, humor, and above all, always, the shimmy. My 2-year-old daughter got a case of the hippie hippie shakes half way into the first song, and they haven't let up.
Zanes doesn't talk down to kids or tell them to eat broccoli. He isn't like Mr. Rogers at all; more like your kind of cool, thin, sloppy-haired, fun-loving uncle who still reads comic books at 45. Which is, of course, the kind of uncle I've always endeavored to be.
Free Music Review: Very good, but not the best Hit: 4 Stars
This is our newest addition to our Dan Zanes collection. My girls like it a lot. As usual, it contains a lively collection of folk tunes and original songs, all of which entertain kids without making their parents' ears bleed. Overall, this isn't our favorite Zanes collection; a few of the songs are a little boring. However, there are a few real standouts on this CD. My kids love Choo Choo Ch'Boogie, Walkin' the Dog, and Grey Goose, and they've both spent the last few weeks belting out I Don't Want Your Millions Mister (and even making up their own words, like "I don't want your cooties sister...."). You can explain the context of some of these folks songs to your kids if you want, or just let them enjoy the music. The CD comes packaged with a nice booklet the kids like to look at in the car.
Free Music Review: fun music for kids that won't drive their parents insane Hit: 4 Stars
This cd was my first exposure to Dan Zanes, and I must sheepishly admit that I saw it first at a local Starbucks. It looked like a fun cd, so I checked it out of the library and put it on for my 2 year old. I'm not one for most of what passes for "children's music", but Zanes' music is definitely not in the same category. This is music that adults can easily tolerate, and if you like funky, funny folk music you'll probably enjoy it quite a bit. I know I do, and by the way, my kid likes it too. We've since listened to "House Party", and we like that one even more.
Free Music Review: Yes, Catch That Train Hit: 4 Stars
We purchased this record for grandchildren aged 2-6 and they loved it. Almost as good was that we adults found the music pleasurable and fun too. The CD was packaged artistically with all the lyrics in a song booklet. The CD's story theme could have been more pronounced so that younger children might more easily identify with the story. That said, we danced up a storm. We're buying other Dan Zane CD's for our enjoyment and will make them future presents to the g-kids. Highly recommended.
Free Music Review: Great Recording Hit: 4 Stars
Great recording, all of the arrangements are very well done. The contributions of other artists are done in taste. This is good listening for either children or adults. I am thinking this is similar to the work of Woody Guthrie's when he was writing and performing songs for his and other children. With all the American Idol, pop-crap out there it is recordings like this that reinforce what music is really about, listening to nice melodies that make us feel good about being alive.
