Parents, prepare to have your lives changed! This is GREAT music that you and your kids will enjoy together. DZAF has created something that goes far beyond music that the kids will beg to hear and grown-ups can stand to play AGAIN in the mini-van. This is music that inspires music-making.

Since we "discovered" DZAF, my four year old spends her days singing, dancing, pretending she "is" Dan Zanes, pretending she's playing with Dan Zanes, and learning to play the piano and ukulele (yes, the DZ Flea edition!). She asked Santa for a harmonica. Just that. Is she learning catchy (ANNOYING) jingles about how to tie her shoes? No. Is she learning anything? Yes. Music is math, art, reading, writing, peace, love and happiness! She is learning that making music is bigger than the song; collaboration to create something good gives children a sense of inclusion, unity, curiosity, and goodwill that they carry with them when the song/dance party is over.

On a barely related note, if you have the chance, see DZAF in concert. The only thing better than hearing the music is experiencing the wild, all-ages folk show in person. Our recent concert experience was so incredible, we're driving from Knoxville to Memphis in March to see the band again!

Our faves from this CD are "Hey, Little Red Bird," "Tennessee Wig Walk," "We Shall Not Be Moved," "Wabash Cannonball," "Jamaica Farewell," "Waltzing Matilda," and "Shining Star." Wow, that's a lot of favorites on one CD! I hope your family will be as inspired by the work of this amazing band as mine has been.

Free Music Review: Thank goodness for Dan Zanes!!!!!!

Mr. Zanes, you could not have come along at a better time! In a market where Teletubbies, Barney and the Wiggles seem to have the corner, this parent-friendly album is a welcome relief from all the fruit salad/I love you, you love me/lemondrops and gumdrops drivel that permeate my mushy stay-at-home mom brain!

When I was a single college gal, I remember listening to very hip, fun music. Then came pregnancy and babies. Then Baby Einstein music (which is good, but sounds like someone's ballerina jewelry box after awhile), Barney, Sesame Street and nursery rhyme CDs that took over my music collection. Ack!!! What happened to me? I decided it was time to search for something new for me and the kids to listen to.

After finding this CD and loving it, I just assumed that my one-year-old and four-year-old would not like DZ because it sounded too different from what they were used to. Boy, was I wrong! My older one thinks she is listening to "cool music" -- which she is! We especially like the "Wabash Cannonball" but every song on here is a hit with my kids. The guy is truly talented, and it's just great stuff. And it's fun to hear the celeb singers on a kid's album. Finally, we all have "cool music" to listen to!

Free Music Review: Dan Zanes -- Weapon of Mass Diversion
Hit: 5 Stars

Much like Patty Loveless on "Mountain Soul" and with equal success, Dan Zanes has gone for a more organic, slightly less contemporary sound on "House Party." The result is a timeless record of quality music.

The title is particulary apt, as the album has the feel of a group of friends and family taking turns in the parlor with old, favorite tunes, evoking a fond comparison to Kate and Anna McGarrigle's "The McGarrigle Hour."

While Dan Zanes has set the bar fairly high with his previous albums, there are many higlights on "House Party": Cynthia Hopkins makes one remember what a beautiful instrument the accordion is; Philip Glass adds his own special somberness to the album's closing "A Place for Us"; "Tennessee Wig Walk" is the most fun I've heard on record in many a day; David Jones, on "How Do You Do?" is straight out of "Mary Poppins"; and, Deborah Harry's voice is as fine as always.

It's become a cliche to say that Dan Zanes' music is as enjoyable for adults as it is for children, but it's true. The seeming simplicity of the songs makes them instantly accessible to children, and the many layers of top-notch musicianship make the songs gems to be prized by their parents.

Free Music Review: I'll listen to this anytime!

I have to be in the mood for alot of my children's music. I can only take so much Raffi and Laurie Berkner and I have to leave the room. From the minute I turned this CD on, I was dancing around the room and singing along with this wonderful man's music. What a relief to actually like my kids music! How nice to actually listen to someone who can sing well!

What I liked most about this CD is that alot of these songs were songs that I sang in grade school music class. Songs like Waltzing Matilda and Hop up Ladies. Wow, take me back! I also love, absolutely LOVE, Sunny Old Sun and Shining Star. Not only is the singing good, but the musical ability of his band it outstanding.

I listen to this, even when my kids aren't around...that's how good it is!

Free Music Review: Dan Zanes is the BEST!

We absolutely love this album! We had first heard of Mr. Zanes on the Disney Channel when we saw the Hello, hello video and we immediately fell in love. We ordered this CD and the All Around the Kitchen DVD and love them both. I listen to the CD continually in my car and my son has enjoyed listening to it since he was a year old. The DVD holds his attention for the entire playing of it. I love that the band members are unique, have a wonderful individual style in terms of fashion, music, voice, instruments, etc. Just a great combination all around! We hope to see him in concert some time soon! I'm going to be purchasing every piece of DZ and friends that I can get my hands on! Keep on doing your thing, Mr. Zanes and we'll keep on listening! :)
