Free Music Review: A "Dandy" album...
Hit: 5 Stars

On this, their third outing (second major label), the Dandys do what they do best- make rock n' roll. From Courtney Taylor-Taylor's sarcastic and condescending lyrics, to the sixties/seventies style punch that's reminiscent of the Stones "Sticky" days, the Dandys truly shine.Throughout the tracks, the Dandys really put up a wall- of both sound and denial. With songs that mock both the youth in "Cool Scene", and the very "crowd" they seem to cater to in "Bohemian Like You" they're at their collective best. All whilst establishing their ability to make abstract, more visceral music as in "Godless" and "Sleep". Somewhere between the hooks, and jams of "Thirteen", the Dandy's make it clear that they take themselves seriously, but not too seriously, and as they sail through this album, we're reminded of the days when bellbottoms and drugs were cool (be that the seventies or now, take your pick). It's easy to see why they have such a cult following in both the States and the UK, but the true genius of this group is their ability to be played by both "Indie" rockers, as well as at your local Gap while you shop for khakis. Yes you can pet them, but don't try feeding them...

Free Music Review: 1 tale of urban euphoria
Hit: 5 Stars

OK, so first off I'd like to thank the guy who bought me this album for Christmas.. thanks Kevin..

Now, I have never been a huge fan of the Dandy Warhols, but this album opened me up to a new side I've never seen from this band. The title itself should at least make you somewhat curious regardless of your age. The album is an eclectic mix of different styles of music (other reviewers have already hit the nail on the head). If you are not a fan, chances are you will become one after popping on the headphones and checking this album out.. I know I too was skeptical, but I digress...

"13 tales" is a very well produced album that makes me happy to know that a major record label can still crank out an album, and doesnt compromise an artist's vision (see OK Computer- Radiohead, also from Capitol Records).

If you were like me.. and didnt "get" the song "Not if you were the last junkie on earth", but found yourself singing along to "everyday should be a holiday".. this album will change your mind. Its a very structured album, and more or less poppier than their previous stuff (at least that's my feeling).. layered with sound and vision.. very fun album... and I cant wait to see them live. Enjoy

Free Music Review: It's the music, Stupid.
Hit: 5 Stars

This band was recommended to me by my buddy Dave K. in the Czech Republic. I had no prior experience with them, except maybe a couple of videos on MTV. I played samples from all of their albums, and I chose this one to buy. The first time I listened to it, I complained, "There's not enough lyrics." Dave replied that all the lyrics that were needed were there. I wondered if I had understood him correctly, but on the second listen, I GOT IT. On just this one album, The Dandy Warhols manage to emulate The Beatles, The Stones, The Byrds, The Offspring, David Bowie, REM, Beck, Franz Ferdinand and Marilyn Manson (and others, I'm sure) - all of this with very hip coolness. It is done so skillfully and so enthusiastically, and combined with so much of their own originality, that it doesn't come across as imitation. I cannot stress enough how good this music sounds. The lyrics are sparse, but they are cryptic, sly and/or funny. (Not really laugh-out-loud funny, or acidly-biting funny, but giggly, stoner funny.) And they reflect aspects of alternative American cultures. I found this band, and particularly this album, to be a revelation, and I owe one to Dave for turning me on to it.

Free Music Review: Sleeper cd of 2000 brings Dandy's to forefront of rock
Hit: 5 Stars

"Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia" is about as perfect of a rock record as you'll find anywhere. The Dandy Warhols have grown by leaps and bounds since "The Dandy Warhols Come Down". The songwriting is, for the most part very original, with the exception of the blatant Stones lift for the beginning of "Bohemian Like You". Courtney Taylor-Taylor and the rest of the band weave in and out of styles and sounds effortlessly which results in a very cohesive listen.

The cd opens up with "Godless" (which also borrows a little bit, this time from George Harrison) a stunning mid-tempo, acoustic driven piece, laced with trumpet for extra oomph. It's a wonderful way to start things off. The Dandy's followup with 2 instrumentals that fit perfectly in the mix and then the back porch twang of "Country Lever". Things shift into high gear with a triumvirate of catchy rockers that practically beg you to put on repeat. The final 5 tunes are a grab bag of styles ranging from cool loungers to mad rockers to gospel-flavored ballads. These tales tell a story that everyone should hear.

Free Music Review: Opened my eyes
Hit: 5 Stars

Before this album, the only music I listened too was metal, grunge, and the Cure. All the angry and sad "Why me?" stuff that every teenage outcast needs. But then I heard Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia. Actually I heard Godless, the first track and first single. It had a groove to it. It was a great pop tune with a drone and a feel of someone who gets the joke. I had previously heard Not if you were the Last Junkie, and had liked it, so I thought I would give this album a shot.
Amazing, every song is a masterpiece. The sound goes from drone, to pop, rock, and even country (sort of). Sounding like one of those classic 60's/70's rock bands that will always be listened to. (Think the Band's Last Waltz, or Lou Reed's Transformer) It gave me no surprise that I later saw magazines calling this one of the top albums of the year, though in my opinion it was the first great album of the new century. Even though I got a little tired of Bohemian Like You, I still (after 5 years) find this to be one of the great albums made in my lifetime, and certainly one of my favorites of all time.
