Free Music Notes for Thirteen Tales From Urban BohemiaFree Music Review: A truly perfected album Hit: 5 Stars
The Dandy Warhols had written some great songs over their first two albums, but "Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia" is their first great album. It is one of those rare albums where everything about it is perfected. The songs are top-notch, and the sequencing is flawless.Every time I listen to this album I am more impressed with how different each song sounds from the other twelve. There are many bands who are guilty of taking a winning formula for a song and then stretching it out to fill an album; you won't find that here. 'Godless' is a terrific opener for the album. 'Neitzsche,' 'Solid' and 'Horse Size Pills' are good rocking fun. 'Gett Off' is simply one of the best songs I've heard in the last year and a half. Time will tell how this album is remembered, but I suspect it will be remembered as a masterpiece of the period. It is truly an album which sparkles with originality and gels with careful construction and production. A soothing breath of fresh air among all the pre-packaged fluff which permeates the present American popular music landscape.
Free Music Review: get ready for a massive concussion of rock and roll Hit: 5 Stars
I love this album. So who cares if it sounds just like the Stones, the Cars, Dexy's Midnight Runners, and the Velvet Underground all strained through the jaded junkie mind of Courtney Taylor-Taylor (and dig that gratuitous 'Taylor'). The Dandys have finally made that over-produced arena rock album they've always wanted to make, but never had the budget for. This is money well spent, unlike say the millions probably shelled out for the next Hootie. The Dandys, like Ween, create an incredible facsimilie of the Classics, without falling into simple parody. Will it stand the test of time? I don't know. I did fear that at first, much like Beck's latest, it was just a guilty pleasure. But you know what? So is all of the best pop: Abba, the aforementioned Stones, the Beatles, the Cars. Crank it up and go 90 on the expressway with all the windows down. It sure moves me more than any of the so-called 'indie' or 'alterna-rock' out there right now. It might even be better than ....Come Down, but I haven't decided yet. Pick it up, and you be the judge.
Free Music Review: Just the best band...ever Hit: 5 Stars
the dandy warhols are the most talented, artistic, whatever rockstars on earth. that's not an opinion, thats a fact. this album totally revolutionized my idea of what music should sound like. 13 tales takes you through trance(?), country, pop, rock, and soft lullabies in one fell swoop. there is something for everyone on this album. the pop song "bohemian like you", which got radio play, isn't nearly as good as some of the radio-unfriendly songs, i.e. Godless, Mohammed, Sleep...etc. and that's not saying anything, because bohemian like you is a damn good song. this is one of the VERY few cds i own (i have alot) that i can listen to from start to finish, and not skip a single song. if you are a fan of music, period, you need this cd. lets get the warhols a platinum in the U.S. are you with me? they deserve it. while you're at it, get "...Come Down" too, and check out their B-sides. every song i hear from them just reaffirms what i already know, the Dandy Warhols are just the best band...ever.
Free Music Review: The Dandys DO rule Hit: 5 Stars
This ablum came to me like a ray of pure sunshine in the dreary world of current rock music. Unlike many of the reviewers, this ablum was my first real taste of The Dandy Warhols. I happened to catch the (very cool BTW) video for "Godless" on MuchMusic and was hooked right away. There is something about this ablum that's a little bold, a little in your face, and a lot of fun to listen to. And they accomplish this not through anything fancy or complex: the lyrics are simple and clever, the music is not overbearing, but when its all thrown together not only works, but it works great. You can tell that the Dandy Warhols ended up with the album they set out to make: a straight up rock n roll album. In the overmarketed, overhyped, world of rock music the Dandy Warhols are a breath of fresh air. I can't recommend this ablum enough. Its my favorite album of 2000 by a mile.
Free Music Review: a petition Hit: 5 Stars
dear reader:this petition has been initiated for the benefit of a band named the dandy warhols. despite crafting catchy pop songs, sporting the cockiest strut this side of the stones, and oozing enough sexual energy to easily fill hendrix's plastercaster mold, i feel the band is not getting the attention nor the airplay that they deserve. while songs like "get off", "bohemian like you", "shakin" merit plenty of personal listening space i feel that their music would be best enjoyed and appreciated by the public at large and any distribution on a smaller scale performs a great disservice to both the performers and music consumers. if you have not already supported this fine group of entertainers by purchasing one of their previous efforts or dropping trou at one of their live shows then i beckon you to please do so now.
