Free Music Review: Great DVD!
Hit: 4 Stars

This is a must for any fan of Dane Cook... I tend to enjoy his older stuff a bit more than the newer stuff, but he does a great job of slipping in a little of the "old" here and there. He doesn't retell the jokes, but makes a reference that any fan will pickup on immediately.

In Dane Cook: Rough Around the Edges: Live from Madison Square Garden, Dane Cook proudly displays his brand of stand up comedy for a crowd of fans that are absolutely fanatical. His performance was the next step in his comedy career, one that he debated and sought approval for from his family. And it was a wise decision indeed, because his routine was largely a success, and the ecstatic fans will keep him in the spotlight for years to come.

Dane Cook's routine is continually on the verge of real-life situations fused with comedy elements, exaggerated for flair, and just from panning around the audience and catching their reactions, some of his material can be interpreted as either wildly raunchy or disgustingly crass. But for the most part, his fans love and accept the direction he heads in, and with his Madison Square Garden performance he has sculpted a great deal of hilarity out of situations that are really quite no-nonsense. Finding the humor behind the most serious of events is perhaps his area of expertise.

His skit contains familiar allusions to previous and recognizable jokes, including his sketch on someone "defiling the coat rack", and references to his "chief/buddy/Gaylord" joke. New bits include swearing on his unborn child over ice cream, the needy children commercials with the old man who ought to demand your money instead of politely asking for a donation, and Oprah giving away bigger and better items on her show, such as schools and humpback whales. Jabs at herpes, the condom fairy, pedophiles, and mannequins are equally hilarious and controversial subject matter, and the audience is convulsive with laughter.

Dane Cook offers full-length commentary for the entire event, which gives some insights on why he chose to run with certain jokes, and why he chose to cut out others that he originally planned on. Many more laughs are to be found on the commentary track, and Cook spills the beans on specific real-life situations that prompted the gags.

"Lighting Up the Garden" is a short documentary that chronicles many of the activities leading up to his live performance, and Cook shares stories of his goals. He actually questioned which direction to take his career, and had to think carefully about continuing stand up and whether Madison Square Garden was a step in the right direction. He had recently accomplished all of his objectives, but with the coaxing of his family, he decided the new venue was a worthy enough opportunity. He tested his routine in Providence, Rhode Island the night before and had much success - he was ensuring he wouldn't pull a "Britney Spears" on the big night. Much to his pleasure, his longtime idol, director Ron Howard showed up to the big event and apparently loved the show. All in all a great experience and a successful affair, Rough Around the Edges: Live at Madison Square Garden is a great chance to see Dane Cook perform his raunchy yet hilarious brand of real-life inspired comedy.

Free Music Review: Feels A Bit Off...
Hit: 3 Stars

First and foremost, allow me to start by saying I am a huge Dane Cook fan. I have seen him two times (Once at Tourgasm and once at a separate venue)and both times he was amazing. As you might guess I also own all of his material and what isn't available to purchase I have downloaded and have watched hundreds of times...

So that all said, why give this set three-stars? First, it's short. Compared to any of his other releases this one falls way below par length-wise. It just clocks in at barely over an hour. Comparatively you could say, "His first album 'Harmful if Swallowed' was 59 minutes." You would be right, but when you include the huge amount of featurettes and extras that were included in the dvd portion of the disc, it's well worth it's weight. On 'Rough...' of the total 15 tracks on the cd portion, only 13 of them were put on the dvd. All in all it feels light and a bit rushed.

Now to what matters: Material.

This is easily Dane's weakest standup thusfar. Although the crowd is electric and laughs at every joke he makes, it still doesn't make up for some material that seems like he's trying to stretch a concept way too-far, past the usual point and into something far less funny.

Some of his jokes had me laughing out loud but for the most part it wasn't the same laughter I had on his previous albums. Listening to 'Retaliation' or 'Harmful if Swallowed' the first time through, I was literally brought to tears at how funny, spontaneous, and just completely absurd Dane Cook was when he was in his zone. First and second time through this cd I found myself listening to his stories, patiently waiting for something funny, rather then laughing while he was telling them.

Obviously if you are a DC fan you already own this collection and most of you will probably think it's great. If you haven't heard DC before I recommend starting with 'Harmful if Swallowed' and move up from there. This is a fine intermission in the 'Dane Cook Show' but will most likely not be remembered in the same way his first two legendary albums were.

Free Music Review: A little Rough, around the edges.
Hit: 3 Stars

This is Dane's 3rd CD/DVD combo, and it is his 3rd best material IMO. Either I am getting to old for Dane Cook, at 23, or he is not as funny as he used to be. The CD does have its typical hilarious Dane moments though. I especially like the track where Dane discusses giving 15 cents a day to the poor kid in Africa, "Yeah, the baby Madonna didn't want".

The annoying-ly loud crowd noise is frustrating, it isn't laughs, it is just constant screaming, how dumb, I'm glad I didn't drop $50-$100 to see his show live. The DVD is the same exact material that is on the CD, Dane is funnier when you can SEE him, because he runs around the stage alot, making his punch lines funnier with his gestures and body languge. So I suggest watching the DVD first then listen to the CD.

The CD contains:
56 minutes of Dane Jokes
10 minutes of screaming fans (not laughing...isn't that what comedy is supposed to be about?)

I love Dane Cook, he is one of my favorite comedians and I am a die hard fan. I enjoyed the DVD but thought it was a disappointment when he had repeated material and not that much more new stuff. The quality of the audio cd wasn't too good and neither was the dvd. I think compared to Vicious Circle this does not compared, plus it was only 60 min, which was also a bummer. I love Dane Cook and I hope he can bring back his good old stuff, since some of the new jokes weren't really that funny. But I will always be a DC fan. And if DC reads this man your great, just don't lose what you had before, and don't listen to people saying your not good, your great and your energy is amazing, just try and not get your head blown up by the popularity and media. Just keep at it man, love ya
