Free Music Review: Eh
Hit: 3 Stars

Definitely not some of his best material but this DVD/CD was pretty funny during some parts.

Free Music Review: The Knicks aren't the only thing that sucks at MSG!
Hit: 2 Stars

To begin, I want to state that I wish to be fair to Dane Cook in this review. Here's why it's necessary: Take all 6 billion people on the planet. Now, subtract every person who has never heard of Dane Cook. Next, subtract Dane Cook.

What's left is a population that can be divided into three groups.

1. People who say things such as "oh my god! Dane Cook is like the best comedian, like ever!" People who think the man is a comic genius. And yes, when they declare opinions to the effect of Dane's shocking potency on the microphone, 9 times out of 10, they will unnecessarily include the word "LIKE." Folks, you are entitled to your opinion. But you're opinion is wrong, I'm sorry, it is. The first question I want to ask them is "and how many comedians do you know?"

2. People who arbitrarily LOATHE Dane Cook and everything about him, insisting there is absolutely NOTHING funny about the man and that every time you buy one of his albums a child in Sudan dies. They hate him for the sake of hating him. These folks are also wrong and unfair. Face it, the guy has been entertaining, accept it.

3. Reasonable folks. I'm in this category, or at least I try to be. I know there are WAY better comedians out there. Patton Oswalt, Todd Barry, Mike Birbiglia, Lewis Black, Carlin, etc. all far superior. But Dane is entertaining. He's made me laugh and I'm OK with that.

Now, with that said ... I WANTED TO LIKE THIS ALBUM. I WANTED IT TO BE GOOD ... mainly because it cost me money. I wasn't EXCITED to get the new DC album, I bought it cuz it was 10 bucks at Beast Buy.

I listened to it and I'm sorry, it's really awful. Really, it's dire, almost a complete abomination. I didn't laugh audibly once and trust me, I wanted to!! I was bored with it. He's just not a great comedy WRITER. Pointlessly and needlessly vulgar at times. Pointless sex humor with no real clever hook to it. The humor was really run of the mill.

And I'll add that I don't like comedy albums recorded in large venues. Small club recordings are better, period. To disagree with that statement is to be wrong. With that said, of all the large venue comedy recordings I've heard, THIS IS THE WORST HANDS DOWN!!

Understand this: I'm a pacifist. I have Amish blood in me, this is a fact. I'm not a violent person. But I want to murder every person who was in that audience in alphabetical order. Clueless. Pointless. Senseless. Just perfectly unnecessary screaming. It wasn't laughter, it was a bunch of idiots screaming in idolatry. In the 60s it would be idiot girls seeing the Beatles. In the late 90s it would be idiot girls seeing the Backstreet Boys or N*Suck. Mindless screaming without any real appreciation for the ACTUAL PERFORMANCE, only for the Golden Calf there on stage, to be in its presence and bow to it, risking the wrath of almighty God himself!! ... yes, scream, worship, obey. Just don't look to me for help when Moses comes strolling down Mt. Sinai to shove the ten commandments up your tail sideways.

Really, I think there were some folks in that audience who had no clue why they were laughing at any given point. And I kept hearing the same voices over and over screaming inanely. Whatever credibility Dane's performance might have had, the crowd just kills it and in very painful fashion. Could nothing have been done about that noise on CD? Sure, but we want the listeners to know that everyone in that building was totally marking out to the almighty Dane Train as it derailed in the Big Apple. Can't have anyone not be painfully aware of that, can we?

This album made my colon constrict. It's that bad.

Free Music Review: Worst CD Sound Quality of 2007
Hit: 2 Stars

Every Dane Cook record is an event, but sadly, this one is not.

1. The Sound Quality : Not in a while have I heard a live recording with such horrendous sound quality. The audience sounds louder than Dane, and most of the jokes are drowned out in a particular bunch of boys screaming (especially during the `naughty' parts). At best, this sounds like someone close to the stage recorded it on cassette.

2. The Jokes : What happened Dane? Where is the humor? Sure, I'm all for nonsensical gags and inappropriate jokes, and Cooks' brand of toilet humor may not be for most people, but here the jokes sank to really pathetic levels. When Dane tackles more `obscene' matter, yes, the jokes do get tawdry, but here they were just cheap.

3. No Replay Value Whatsoever : This is the point that I have issues with. Every comedy album should be replayable, and you should at least want to play it to a few people you know. This album, unlike the last one by Dane, is just useless in that aspect. I can't imagine wanting to listen to this again, as much as I do like Cook.

Two Stars. Dane Cook should go back to the drawing board. Until then, this release should be cancelled and the sound quality should be cleaned up before re-release. Its not like we live in the `80s anymore, we expect live recordings to at least sound passable - this one fails on all counts.

Hit: 2 Stars

Dane Cook - Rough Around The Edges is just that. A very rough sounding recording, especially for someone who is as big a star as Dane is right now. I read on Dane's site where this cd/dvd package was made to be far superior to the thrown together packages of his last 2 offerings. Well, that is a joke in and of itself. The audio quality on the cd portion is horrible. The crowd is louder than him through the biggest part of the album and makes it difficult to hear the show. Also, applause seems to last too long, this is ok on video but should of been edited a little better for audio cd. Next, some of this material has been done already, i.e. the ice cream debacle and the starving kids/Oprah routine. This was performed on Comic Relief 2006 so that was a little disappointing. The show in general is decent with some funny bits like calling his tivo tito. My main gripe with the show is that as soon as it starts to get really good, its over. Recommended only for die hard fans. Now on to the dvd which is essentially the same exact show. The audio seems to fare only slightly better but the picture has a lot of pixelation in it from time to time that can be a little distracting. All in all, for under $10 @ best buy it was worth it for the package but still a little disappointed on the content quality. Go in with your friends or just borrow someone else's copy.

Free Music Review: Not as good as I'd hoped
Hit: 2 Stars

I've been a pretty hardcore Dane Cook fan since his breakout comedy routines only a few scant years ago. "Harmful if Swallowed" was spectacular. "Retaliation", was incredible. "Viscious Circle" was...okay. "Tourgasm" was awesome. Now we've got "Rough around the Edges". Unfortunately the name says it all.

This latest installment in Dane's standup is "Rough Around the Edges", and not nearly as good as it looks. Sure Dane can pack Madison Square Garden with fans but that doesn't do you any good if nobody can hear what you're saying. From the moment I put this CD on all I could hear was nothing but fans screaming where the mic was, which totally detracted from the show. I had to turn my volume down to bring the shrieking fans to an acceptable volume limit. Even then you could barely hear Dane through it all. The audio quality is just terrible. I mean, it's "really" bad.
Dane's material isn't all that bad, he does use a few of his older routines from some of his other CD's and such. It's good to sometimes "reference" a few of your better known jokes, but it's another thing entirely to repeat the same joke again, and again, and again.

MY VOTE: Don't buy this.

Plain and simple, this isn't a CD, it's a drink coaster. Poor audio quality and a too quiet Dane, unfortunately, dooms this album.
