Free Music Notes for Rough Around the Edges: Live from Madison Square GardenFree Music Review: Definitely NOT Dane's Best Hit: 2 Stars
Being only a casual fan of Dane, I'd not heard any of the material on this album until I listened to it on the way home from buying it...and unfortunately, it just wasn't that funny. A few bits every 15 minutes or so were great, but there was definitely too much "filler" type comedy. This is the only Dane album where, when I give it another listen in the future, I will skip around only to the best bits. In comparison, Harmful if Swallowed and Retaliation are both comedy albums I can listen to all the way through without missing a single bit. My girlfriend is a Dane fanatic, and even she sat in silence through nearly the entire album. HER main criticisms were: The cursing was excessive (even for Dane) and "it just wasn't very funny". I must also add to those who claim that the audio is entirely too loud on the laughing/cheering crowd. I turned the volume down during several points of the album and then had to turn it back up in order to hear Dane continue his act. Not the best sound quality, but perhaps it couldn't have been avoided. Who knows. All in all, it's worth a listen if you're a Dane completist. If you're just now getting into his work, you'd be better served to pick up Harmful if Swallowed and Retaliation and avoid Rough Around the Edges altogether.
Free Music Review: Popularity has it's downside Hit: 2 Stars
Dane Cook was the hottest new comedian around when he came on the scene several years ago. His comedy was raw, full of energy and pretty clever. His popularity soared and he became a hot commodity. He made movies and did commercials. A true success story. Dane's comedy is still very topical and he's just as funny. The problem is he's reached rock star status and the thousands of followers that love him because he's famous and cheer his every breath ruin this performance. Their shallow uncontrolled shrieking is perfect testimony as to why it sucks to be famous. The audience cheers parts of this show that aren't even intended to be funny. They just are so amazed that they are seeing a true superstar in person.
It's pretty pathetic and I'm guessing even Dane is embarrased by the whole thing. Skip this nonsense unless you feel the need to be part of the trend.
Free Music Review: Dane Cook jumps the shark Hit: 2 Stars
Dane Cook was a lot funnier when he thought he was a comedian and not a rock star. This isn't even all new material, just him talking to a bunch of teenage girls who screem but don't laugh. Get one his earlier CD's or DVD's instead.
Free Music Review: Let Down Hit: 1 Stars
First, I am a Dane fan. I've got'em all; CDs & DVDs. Let me just tell you--this isn't good folks. My overwhelming complaint with "Rough" is the sound. The crowd is crazy loud and distorted--easily drowning out Dane. I wasn't even 2 mins into the CD and was already disappointed.
Aside from the sound quality, I don't believe the material is there either. There are several repeat bits and sequences that don't go anywhere. It simply doesn't feel whole.
This addition from the Dane Camp just didn't do it for me. You let me down, Dane.
Free Music Review: Wow, this is bad. Hit: 1 Stars
I've seen and heard pretty much everything Dane Cook has put out and appeared in. I was excited about this new album and actually looked forward to its release date. I finally heard it and was dissapointed. The material just isn't funny. There's too much screaming into the mic, too much cursing for no reason and the audience is so annoying. They scream like he's a rock star and about everything. The CD should have been edited better and the volume of the crowd decreased. As much as I wanted to, it was hard to find any thing good about it.
