I may be biased. Being my favorite rapper, MF Doom is always gonna get some respect from me. His latest collaboration with Danger Mouse and the great people from Adult Swim of The Cartoon Network is more than you would expect. Actually, it's exceptional. Whether truly inspired or no, these two guys get down like they've been together forever. As usual, here's the breakdown:
Beats:
Dangermouse is definitely one of the better producers that are ranked in the "underground" categories. He received critical acclaim for his "Grey Album", which were remixes of Jay-Z's "Black Album" and the Beatles' "White Album". Here, the beats are tailored to Doom's flow, which the supervillain rides like the Lone Ranger. Nothing really hard, nothing really soft, it's the album to straight chill to from beginning to end. Dangermouse cleverly mixes Adult Swim character voices and odd samples to give us not only great music, but great art. So impressive! 'Benzie Box' and 'Vats of Urine' are great examples of his playful style.
Flows:
Doom drops dopeness all over this album. First off, he comes in on 'El Chupa Nibre' bristling like an angry porcupine, "Act like you know me,even with the mask on/Show me what you owe me/Tell her brush her grill, and wash her face and tw** homey". Coolly off kilter, Doom's whole style is to keep you off balance. He seems to be adept at using sideways references of old TV shows and movies. For example, he clowns on 'Old School': "Arabian somee! Ooh wee, like a Hung Kung Phooey kick/or a weekend afternoon, karate movie flick". More of the best in obscurity from the Super-villain where that came from.
Lasting Appeal:
All I can say is that The Cartoon Network made a spectacular investment in the abilities of these underground masters. I love the way this album plays, and it will go classic instantly, no matter how much it sells. It's worth it for the appearance of Ghostface alone. If you love Adult Swim, it's worth it as well. Hell, they paid Lesko the Free Money Guy to do a commercial for the album. Dude, that's classic right there! Pick up "Mm Food" as well.
