Free Music Notes for Everest: Soundtrack From The IMAX Film Experience

Free Music Review: If you're wondering which Harrison songs are featured here.
Hit: 4 Stars

A few details aren't described very clearly in the pre-purchase information at Amazon, so I wanted to make them available here. The five George Harrison songs that are featured on this instrumental album include "All Things Must Pass," "Life Itself," "This Is Love," "Give me love," and of course the well-documented "Here Comes The Sun." As those familiar with Steve Wood's masterful projects already know, "Everest" features interpretations and elements of these five Harrison songs, not the unadulterated songs themselves. I hope this helps anyone who might be new to the Steve Wood/Daniel Mays interpretive format. It's worth checking out if you appreciate instrumental records with multi-layered components such as (in this case) a variety of acoustic, stringed instruments and the accentuation of what appear to be genuine Tibetan monk chants. I bought this CD on the strength of Steve Wood's interpretations of Sting as previously manifested on the IMAX soundtracks for "The Living Sea" and "Dolphins." Both of those are undeniably more varied throughout and feature a greater representation of world music, though with a higher concentration on Carribbean themes. "Everest," on the other hand, maintains a strong emphasis--appropriately enough--on the quasi-mystical influences of the far East. If you are a devotee of George Harrison, this is an easy way to get your hands on more of "his" music, including some intelligent variations of his structure.

Free Music Review: From an Insider
Hit: 4 Stars

I work in a museum with a domed theatre called the "ElectricSky Theater." We have a 70mm projector which covers 2/3 of the dome with the image of the film. The first film I ran here as a projectionist was Everest. Watching the film over and over again (probably up to 200 times in its showing), I grew tired with the dialogue and even some of the imagery (since I had to watch for rips, burns, tears, and scratches). However, I loved the soundtrack to Everest. It's a must-have for anyone who loves soundtrack adventure scores.

Free Music Review: Soaring music with one notable crevasse
Hit: 4 Stars

I saw this film when it came out and excitedly bought the soundtrack at the nearby gift shop. The music is great, but the real selling point for me was the final rendition of 'Here Comes the Sun' in the movie. Alas, this version - with new vocals by George Harrison - was not included on the soundtrack. How disappointing!

If you haven't seen the film you won't miss it, but if you have it's kind of obvious. You'll have to see the DVD to hear it.

Free Music Review: Misleading! I Thought George's Songs Would Be Played!
Hit: 2 Stars

I should have investigated this CD more before quickly ordering it. Its not bad, just a ... if you're paying "new CD prices" like I did and based on what you recieve. Its a soundtrack! That should pretty much tell you what to expect (pretty "filler" music with a few good songs thrown in). I, however, saw the mentioning of "including the Music of George Harrison" and thought this would be some truly oustanding music or contain some "lost" George Harrison songs. It has an instrumental version of "Here Comes The Sun" that is pretty (although short) and some mediocre classical-sounding tunes that slip into bits from George's solo songs. There are some nice moments, and since I don't have very much music like this, I will probaly learn to appreciate it. Still, if you are like me and felt sad about George Harrison's recent death, DO NOT THINK this will introduce you to anything to do with his music! There are many great albums/cds that he recorded both during and after The Beatles that should be tracked down. My favorite is WONDERWALL MUSIC (A Really GREAT SOUNDTRACK) containing beautiful songs using Indian instruments.

Free Music Review: Nice music, but where's George?
Hit: 2 Stars

As the soundtrack to an IMAX film of the scaling of the world's tallest summit, this is a fine album, full of stirring themes, mystic teases, and some well-known tunes. The biggest flaw is that the cover advertises George Harrison's name in big letters, but it contains no actual music performed by George. Orchestral revamping of material like "Here Comes The Sun" is okay, but if you're looking for any new material from Mr. Harrison (such as SUNG by him), you're out of luck.
